  • A beginner's guide, build and review of the Airfix 1/72 scale Curtiss P40B Warhawk plastic model kit, which is included as part of the Pearl Harbor Dogfight Doubles Gift Set, also featuring a Mitsubishi A6m2B Zero.
    In this video I break things down a bit more for those of you who are just starting out in the hobby , or have had a break. This gift set would be suitable as a starter set due to the number of included paints, brushes and the tube of poly cement.
    Additional paints used (not included in set):
    Humbrol 135, 49 & 53, Decalfix

    Great review Matt! I am surprised that Airfix did not include a small container of primer in the kit. I have read on forums that this is a very nice model and your build bears this out. Thanks for sharing this information.

      Thanks! Yes, it's a nice little kit. I don't think i've ever had a model kit set where they've included a pot of primer paint . . .

    Fuselage seams are always present no matter how good the fit. Even if you don't use filler, shouldn't you at least give it a few swipes with a sanding stick or sand paper? (That would be something Airfix could include in the gift sets as well).
    Great that you use basically what's included, even the paints that may not be your favorite. You show that a perfectly acceptable model can be built from the box without photo etch, resin updates and special paints. Very encouraging to those getting started out and for parents not wanting to invest a fortune if this doesn't turn out to be something the child really doesn't like(don't know how that could ever be the case though!).

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks! Yeah, on older airfix kits the join seams are very noticeable, but on these newer ones they're pretty good. I find that many TH-cam modelling channels out there focus on the more advanced/professional techniques of model building, which can be quite daunting for newer modellers. I try to make my videos more accessible :)

    Airfix markets a A6M2 Zero, a B5N2 Kate, and a D3A1 Val. Airfix ought to offer these three in one package as Pearl Harbor Raiders, with a markings option for the the Battle of Midway. For that matter Airfix could also offer the Spitfire, Hurricane and Defiant in one package as Battle of Britain Defenders.

    Great video! I agree the P40 is easier to build than the Zero I just finished my P40 a few days ago and took me about 14-16hrs 😅 I used Tamiya mark fit to apply the decals but the decals it still shiny and I think I will buy a matte barnish and a Tamiya wash (because I don’t know how to make it)

    Nice mat Matt :) I especially like the ones with angles and/or a protractor built in so you can cut to exact angles if you need to.. also the ones with a known size of squares so you can also get precise sizes by just counting squares. Mind you at 1:72 one inch equals six feet so precision might be a dead duck *lol*

    Nice work........however, I just have no luck brush painting models. I (reluctantly) use an airbrush. I say reluctantly because I hate the cleaning airbrushes need after use, however I do like the paint job they provide. I would try brush painting some but I inevitably wind up with thick brush strokes and colors that are too vivid, instead of the effect with an airbrush where you tend to get colors a little more "soft" and subdued.

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it can be a bit tricky with a brush, i feel that i do ok most of the time :). I might look into an airbrush in the future . . .

    Is humbrol 135 varnish the same as the Matt vanish? I just brought some Clear gloss vanish and it’s made my model milky. Should I use 135 satin instead? Thanks any help would be much appreciated

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      135 is a satin varnish. The matt varnish does leave a white residue (as mentioned in my Academy Sopwith Camel video). I combat this by mixing the matt and satin varnishes together at times, it prevents the white finish but still gives a more matt than satin finish

    What glue are you using? I am newbie at model kit so I don't know what the perfect glue for model kit. Can someone give some tips?

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any polystyrene cement will work on plastic kits but there are loads of different kinds for different jobs. Tamiya extra thin cement is good, but then something with a nozzle like the Humbrol or revell precision ranges are good for getting the glue in the right places

  • @no.7893
    @no.7893 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I find that gloss varnish isn't needed as the Humbrol DecalFix creates a smooth surface by itself, its a bit of an all in one that stuff

    • @ModelMinutes

      Yeah, it does have that quality, but sometimes it depends on how high-quality the decals are too - sometimes I just like to play it safe
