I dedicate this song to my late father who had Irish heritage. My father was a hero and a great man.

Absolutely fantastic, this cuts a perfect balance between Strummers version and a more traditional rendition, best I've heard.

"The Minstrel Boy" is an Irish patriotic song written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) who set it to the melody of The Moreen, an old Irish air. It is widely believed that Moore composed the song in remembrance of a number of his friends, whom he met while studying at Trinity College, Dublin and who had participated in (and were killed during) the Irish Rebellion of 1798.

The actual Wikipedia quote is: ""The Minstrel Boy" is an Irish patriotic song written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) who set it to the melody of The Moreen, an old Irish air. It is widely believed that Moore composed the song in remembrance of a number of his friends,[1] whom he met while studying at Trinity College, Dublin and who had participated in (and were killed during) the Irish Rebellion of 1798. However this has never been definitively proved and the tune is also played by the British Army and Orange Order flute bands."

@@diesel_dawg the lyrics are by Thomas Moore, the tune may be based on a traditional tune, which has Irish roots but also was stolen and attributed to orangemen and perfidious Albion, like what they do to all their colonies!! Thomas Moore stole it back and in the true spirit of Irish patriotism made sure that it was returned to the original source, namely the Irish folkloric tradition. Put that in Wikipedia.

The song is about a 16 year old Private who was a Black Slave during the Irish Rebellion who fell in battle Tom More considered him a friend. He pictured black slaves being free he wanted him to be remembered as a Solider and not as a Black Slave. The British Army started playing it during the American Revolutionary War in honor of Black Slaves that fought alongside them. The Irish Brigade brought it to the Confederacy in honor of Black Slaves who fought alongside them.
