    After four years on keto, and Finding out my arteries are plugged up I went home, threw all that crap away, went and bought fruits and vegetables, and never looked back. That was four months ago! Doing much better. There are tons of plant basedrecipes on TH-cam. I bought all your books! I am in 100%.

      Good job. I've been vegan for 34yrs, so when I went keto, I went plant based keto. I definitely got a "high" from it. I loved my stomach being completely flat, I loved that I could go days without eating...but then other things started happening. I developed asthma and had severe attacks for the first time in my life, and I developed scalp psoriasis. Dumbest thing I ever did - and I knew better....

    Another really good tip to make that thing taste even more rich is take a diced onion and cook it on the skillet, then cook the tortilla in the onion juice that has been extracted from the heat. Makes it awesome. And that's how the do it on the street corners down in Mexico. AKA "street tacos".

    Doctor McDougall is correct about a person's appetite changing, after following his plant based high starch diet. I had always been a meat eater. After reading John's "Starch Solution" book, I thought there is no way I can stay on this diet without having meat and dairy products, especially cheese. After being on John's diet for only two weeks, I found I had no desire for meat or dairy products. In fact, when looking at a picture of a big juicy steak, I become nauseous. Don't ask me how that happened, because I don't know,,,lol.
    I am 72 years old and as of this date June 4, 2015, I have been on the Starch Solution diet for four months. My super high blood pressure is now normal and without ever taking any type of blood pressure medication. I plan on staying on this diet for the rest of my life. I wish I had started the diet when I was much younger, but at least I am on it now.

      +TheTexasbuddy Awesome testimony! I am just starting the McDougall plan, 3 days so far. I've tried Paleo and gluten-free for 3 years, GAPS for 1 year. Just got off Keto after a few months...I can not stand to eat another piece of meat after that diet. As a last resort I thought to try plant based and found Dr McDougall. I hope my results are as wonderful as yours has been.

    • @Keaton-Casablanca
      @Keaton-Casablanca 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Tem Rossi I have been on the high starch solution diet for close to eight month and I am pleased with the results. I watch lots of Doctor McDougall's you tube clips. I refer to my diet as being a high starch Vegan diet. I noticed in one of the Doctor's clips, John doesn't want to be associated with the Vegan diet, just the high starch diet. Tern, I hope you have the same good results as I have experienced. An added benefit to the high starch diet, my grocery bill is much less. The diet is not only a healthy diet, but a very economical diet. Good luck to you.

      +Capricorn This is not surprising -- it is the norm. When we eat the wrong foods, our microbiome becomes adapted to that food. Because of this, these bacterias "hijack" our system and make us crave more of those wrong foods. Once we have effectively stopped the addiction, these gut bacterias are gone -- they've been replaced by other ones that make our tastebuds prefer the healthier food since its the one they thrive on.

      Don't know how you're do7ng six years layer, but at two weeks on, I've rediscovered oatmeal. It fills me up, feels good in my belly, and keeps me going all or most of the day with no cravings. I typically follow it with rice in the evening.
      When I feel more grounded with this new (for me) way pf eating, I'll probably do it as OMAD, like I did with keto.

    I have been eating this way for about 5 and 1/2 weeks. It is really helping me. I feel great, energetic, and my chronic pain is reduced. I have lost about 9 pounds without trying at all. I don't miss animal foods at all, even if my husband eats them in front of me. In fact the smell makes me a bit nauseous. My kids, all grown, think I am crazy, but I don't care!!!! I made these beans today and they are quite good. I am going to have them with rice as soon as the rice cooker is done!

      I am 18 and just found out about this McDougall guy 2 weeks ago, so far I only been on his diet ONE WEEK, it's been pretty good but damn I needed lots of fresh and dry ingredients (Like Thyme, Dill Weed, Cumin) Besides that though, the fresh whole foods and whole grain pasta and bread aren't THAT expensive, i wonder how it compares against my meat diet lol. SO far I think I already lost like 2 Pounds and my Brother did as well! He is 13.

    I love to watch the both of you in your cooking demonstrations. You are so practical and use everyday ingredients and don't get hung up on things like spicing up a meal with some peppers. I am watching this video at almost 10 PM and it has me drooling, but it's too late to eat now. I'll ask my wife to watch this video and then prepare some burritos for us to chow down on. I eat bean burritos and bean tacos at Taco Bell an average of once a week. I learned from an employee that they don't use lard in the beans (they used to quite some time ago). I wish they had whole wheat tortillas. Being mostly a vegetarian I find it difficult to eat out when I am on the run. That's why I use the drive thru at Taco Bell. But most fast food joints sell nothing but garbage. Thanks for your willingness to share these great recipes. I am going to look on the Internet to see if I can find some free recipes of yours. My wife and I are fledgling vegetarians but we are in our 60s, and it is not easy to leave off meat after using it for so many years. Your videos on TH-cam are a real blessing to us.

    I recently ordered both of Mary's recipe DVDs ,as a set. I highly recommend the set. They are professionally filmed and are of excellent quality. I noticed one viewer complained that this You Tube clip you are watching was not very clear. If that bothers you, don't worry, because her DVDs are oh high quality and are excellent. In both DVDs, Mary takes you step by step as she prepares over 40 of her best recipes. John also appears before each recipe and shares much of his knowledge about his High Starch Diet. The two make a great team and I promise you will be totally entertained while being educated. John has posted a link to the top of this page to lead you to Mary's DVD's. Be sure and check them out

    Change is hard until we want it. I worked in cardiology, and I smoked. I tried to quit, and it was horribly hard. One day I was paged to do an EKG, and I went to a ward where there were a bunch of old men. When I looked around, I could see some of them were smoking cigarettes through their tracheotomies. It was so horrific I couldn't believe my eyes. Nicotine was the hardest thing I've ever had to give up. But that gave me the desire. And it wasn't long before I was clean. Meat? Trivial.

    For those too lazy to use a crockpot, you can use canned beans and blend half the can then cook together on the stove with the other half. I find this tastes really good and is super quick to do. My favourite bean to use is red kidney or pinto, probably red kidney as theyre a bit sweeter.

    • @aloveofsurf
      @aloveofsurf ปีที่แล้ว

      Do I understand correctly that you cook the blended and unblended beans together?

    • @ATIWatchReviews
      @ATIWatchReviews ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@aloveofsurf No, use pre-cooked canned beans and blend cold with water, spices and sugar. So blend 2 cans of pre-cooked kidney, pinto or black beans and save a third of 1 can to put in whole in the pan. Then heat the blended beans with the whole beans in the pan until very hot and to the right consistency. This is the quickest way to eat tasty refried beans without having to cook your own for hours. Blending them with spices brings out the flavour better than just using canned beans without blending I find.

    I cook 3 lbs. of beans every weekend, and that's lunch for the following week. I add garlic, onions and veggies though and make it into more of a soup.
    Use corn tortillas that are treated with lime for calcium rich tortillas.

      I live in a small town with not many options and the only ones I find are Ezekiel, also in the freezer section. They are rustic. I like them, but they don't imitate the finely ground flour ones you see Mary using. Maybe on the internet.

    Unfortunately most the restaurants put bacon or lard in their beans sometimes sausage. Even the Vegan places around here use too much Fat in their recipes. When I ask they always say "oh well it's the good fat". I don't eat out anymore, not for the time being as I am regaining my health.

      Try to find a wheat burrito that doesn't have interesterified soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil and/or palm oil. I've taken to only using the minimal ingredient (corn, lime, water) corn tortillas. They're smaller, but that's okay.

    • @Chimonger1

      One person I know, contacted a restaurant that makes their own tortillas from flour and water, basically...no preservatives. She simply negotiated with that owner, to make and sell her some each week.

    • @MrDarrylR

      @@smallfootprint2961 Ezekiel bread is a very good option. Just remember its sold in the freezer section because it doesn't have the ingredients/additives that make other store breads shelf stable. I keep a couple loafs in my freezer, for when I'm too lazy to make breakfast.

      @@MrDarrylR your post was about the fat/oil in tortillas. Just suggesting that the whole food Ezekiel tortillas might fill the bill. I know they do for me, and flourless, which also suits me.

    Nice video and good advice. Dried beans are very easy to cook in a slow cooker, but it helps if you use ones that aren't too old. I once fixed a package of pintos that were several years old, and after 12 hours on the stove, they were still fairly hard!

    A simple solution is balsamic vinegar.
    A nice alternative, albeit requiring preparation, is using soy yogurt as a base & adding various spices/lemon juice to make dressings. Tzatziki (yum!) & variations (especially using pureed cucumber as a base) offer a plethora of options.
    Also, salsas & all of the myriad possible variations on a theme (hummus and variations) work well too.
    Like the video, try Mex or Chinese as a starting point. Diced/pureed tomato, cucumber, garlic, beans etc are easy bases

    Yes! One needn't make this too complex.
    A simple healthy breakfast is old fashion oats, 1-2T cinnamon, (raisins opt.), & after cooking add sliced banana, & ~1T ground flax seeds, water (or a non fat unsweetened rice milk substitute If needed - I don't). Add whole fruit such as an apple, kiwi, mixed berries, etc. & you are good to go. Depending upon your schedule & habits, you might even consider a lrg salad of greens or a cuc/tomato style salad w/ balsamic vin or a soy yogurt base dressing.

    A common question. My understanding is that you use the whole green leafy & colored vegies as a foundation...as much as you like (note the LOW caloric density!). Add a piece or two of fruit (limit/moderate the sugar intake). Now, if you require additional caloric intake, simply modify the above by adding starches - whole beans, rice, corn, grn beans, quinoa, etc. until you are full & have satisfied the necessary caloric requirements. More starches if you are losing wt, or less if you are gaining

    The wheat tortillas often have a little fat added. The soft corn do not. The calories from fat listed on the package is only that found naturally in the grain.
