It’s a shame what goes on in the forest products industry. Hopefully what happened with the Goodsons will bring real positive change to the logging industry. Corruption is so deep in our nation it’s disgusting and sad.

I agree with this, but I feel I should note that it is not just the loggers that are suffering right now, the landowners are feeling the pinch too. If you have trees, they are a huge (and extremely vulnerable) capital item that only returns every 20-25 years and is left bare at the moment of harvest. In the mid-South, many (in some areas most) farmers stopped row crop farming and cattle farming and started tree farming in the 70s/80s. They saw an opportunity to have good returns on investment and when their trees were ready for harvest, they could expect good competition (and therefore good profits) when they sold them. As the "old school" loggers went away in favor of the extremely high capital expense modern logging company and corporate consolidation, imported lumber, more recycling, etc. dried up the number of mills/buyers, the price that the landowner gets has not only gone down in current year dollars, its gone down drastically when corrected for inflation. Yet, we have obscenely expensive lumber, while the landowners and loggers are going broke. A tornado tore up several acres of good timber on my home place, so I got a forester to estimate the value. I was stunned at how little it would have been worth to log. A lot of landowners are not replanting because they can't get enough money from the timber sale to pay for replanting. I do see a glimmer of hope in that I know a LOT of people have invested in "peckerwood" sawmills and are starting to saw their own lumber and sell it locally, cutting out the middle men.

IMHO the two companies most responsible for starting the ( this is what we will pay and if you don't like it we will get someone else) are General Motors and US Steel they made it stick and everybody else followed them, the only thing you could do was find a niche where you could make a profit and stay there.of course the chickens have come home to roost so we will see how it all shakes out.

The logging business has been a race to the bottom. The mill is full so they lower the price so loggers ramp up production to make the same money sooo... the mill drops the price again. This happened with pulp in the '80s and now sawlogs. The mechanized operations have such big overhead that they need to keep making wood even if the mill price drops. The price of pine logs here in the northeast is just getting back to where it was before the 2008 crash. Why should the mills pay more for logs when they are getting flooded with wood? Mechanization is not going away but if we keep overproducing just like dairy farming some of us are going to go out of business.

We don’t all get (or accept) subsidies and acting like we do is a disservice to all the producers in this country that are getting the shaft. Actually, in my area the low grade market has been supported by subsidized rates paid to the biomass power plants to keep them running. Dairy Farmers of America has a monopoly on my market just like IP did when my dad was trying to support us on pine pulp.

The sawmills around here have their own logging crews and have their own land. American pulp wood cutters are not going to be around for much longer. Smarten up or start stacking lumber at the mill!

Before you can lead you need a following, I’m working on step one. I am a board member of the Louisiana Logging Association and have the backing of the American Logging Council. We are doing everything we can to create change. Shutting down isn’t the answer, we must unify and act as one.
I honestly feel more is wrong from our industry because loggers and some truckers tell their foresters “we’re ok, it’s tight but we’re ok” or start working till dark every day.
The first week of July there will be a meeting in town and we need every trucker and logger there. Keep a eye out for details on that to come.
But I promise, there are lots of us trying, we’re not talking for attention. We just need everyone else to stand with us when needed.

@@CuttingEdgeLogging_Thomas I'll stand with you and do what is necessary. You have a following but many of us are frustrated with the industry as a whole. Many of us are generational in the industry and remember when it provided a great living for a family. The days of pinching pennies until the Buffalo craps are gone. People need leadership as to the direction to take. It seems complaining to owners of logging companies is getting nowhere and more loggers and drivers are starting to talk about walking off and blocking mills and jobs. The woods used to provide a great life for the workers and families. How is diplomacy going to solve this issue when Florien alone makes millions extra in a year while stomping a the family man at the bottom of the totem pole. 16 hours a day with 3 children and a wife that was fired for a shot is kinda hard to swallow for $200 a day. Time for mills to wake up and pay correctly or run dry.
