People have been pulling "poor health" scams for centuries, it's one of the most common types of scams. Lots of beggars still do that on the streets everyday, pretending to be in very poor health and homeless, and then they go home to nice houses and cars.

These inheritance scams have been around for a long time, mid 1990s. Its sad how many lost money by this.
Ben, don't hesitate to report "Kelly" to the police/FBI - whether she's consciously involved with the scam, or if she's being taken advantage of, ether way this should to be investigated by the authorities.

However, the mule (codenamed "Kelly") appears to be a real person residing in US and Ben was able to obtain her personal info. Whether she's consciously working with scammers or is yet another victim, remains unclear.

@@alexc8253 this isn’t necessarily true. Money mules can sometimes be in on the scam, but sometimes they think they are doing something innocent and are not getting any of the cut at all. This type of thinking is even more dangerous because it prevents victims from learning about this type of scam. Many times, money mules are victims of a job scam.

I'm a retired fraud investigator. These videos (almost) make me regret retiring. I see things that always put me on high alert, like a "lawyer" referring to a "client" as "Mrs First-name". I get calls that my phone identifies as coming from "abroad", but still shows as originating from a UK cell number. I almost expect to be called "Mr. Reginald"... ...and often am. I fail to make the most of the many opportunities to have fun at a scammer's expense that come along. Familiarity breeds contempt.

This actually worked out for my 501(3)c animal rescue. The email was brief, though - not long winded. It just said that we are the recipients of part of the estate of "J Foster." That's not the name but it was a common name & we had no idea who this person was. It gave us a phone # to call. Turned out the phone # was to one of the big insurance companies & it was legit. The ins co mailed us a formal letter & a form to fill out. We rec'd $15,000 cash & $50,000 in stocks. Turns out the deceased lady contributed to us once abt 10 yrs ago is why we didn't remember her.

One of the key differences is that your bequest did not also come with a requirement to pay any money for "processing". When someone leaves you something in their will, the estate pays for all the processing and the inheritors just get the assets.

Shady guys all over. Even as far back as 2005 I have been receiving such emails. For the first few ones I did follow them a bit and once it reached the point of me paying a fee, my conclusion was was drawn - scam!
I thought I was not going to hear Ghana 🇬🇭 😔. I feel disappointed and ashamed of the Ghanaian who was involved in that. Shady guys.

Last year, I had a very similar story from a "dying" lady in Scotland. The storyline is very similar to yours and the IP address of the Scammer showed HIM to be in Nigeria!
sometimes i respond to these emails and when they ask for money i send them some. but not 350 dollars. 350 west african francs (which is like $1.50). i wish i could see their faces when they come to their local western union to pick up the money :D
