@@Agustindem It's interesting that it resolves that way - since D and C are chord tones that are shared for authentic cadences in both C major and A minor. (The D in GMaj and E7, and the C in Cmaj and Amin) It gives off the impression that, no matter how the memories may feel when he looks back on them, Sebastian has found closure on those times.
I personally feel it leans more towards the major side, since having it be an A minor ending would feel incomplete as C is the third of an Amin chord - and I like the idea of Sebastian and Mia happily moving on their lives separately.

Even though this ending is bittersweet, and I’m sure we all have at least one person we often wonder about, I think this does illustrate how they were the right people for each other at that point in time. They both pushed and encouraged each other to follow their dreams and not give up. In the end, their story feels more to me as a catalyst that allowed them to sustain their passion for their dreams, and achieve great heights. They could have never done it without the other. This is what makes their bond so powerful and in my opinion, less of a romantic one. It speaks more to a kind of kindred spirit connection. I love this movie.

She eventually passed it and moved to USA. One month later we broke up. Fast forward to four years later, I saw her fb photo of her holding her baby daughter. I felt happy and also a bit of sadness of what could have been. I could persuaded her to just forget about the exam when she was already demotivated to sit for it. But she has always been wanting to move to US so I pushed her to achieve it. I guess thing you did for people you used to love

@brianticas6909 The thing is that Mia wanted to be an actress. It was her passions and it made her feel fulfilled. It wasn't necessarily about the money, though everyone wants to live comfortably, it was about being on the screen and playing roles, the lights and the music and the costumes. It was about acting. Sebastian dreamed of having a bar not because of money, but because he wanted a space where like minded people could go to share something that was so important to him. He wanted his passion to touch people's hearts. Mia and Sebastian had dreams not because of money or fame, but because of their own volition to do something that completed them. They struggled to communicate that, which ended up tearing them apart, but it's not just a job for them.

I finally understood the ending : It's from Mia's perspective as she dreams of what could have been, ignoring all the obstacles and seeing everything through rose tinted glasses (like the first encounter or her play, why is it all of the sudden full with people?). Everything works out for her, she accomplished her dream together with her dream love, but then they reach the present, and she realizes, she would sit in the Van Beek with Seb, but he would not be playing nor owning the place meaning he never furfilled his dream. Life ain't like the movies where everything works put, you sacrifice a lot furfilling your dreams.

For me, the ending is so powerful because, he pushed her to fulfill her dreams, and so did she. Neither one of them held the other back. They both wanted the absolute best for each other no matter the cost to their personal happiness. When they were speaking by the Observatory in the daylight, he knew when she got the part she would be traveling and successful and he didn't want to hold her back. If Seb had given up the band and traveled with Mia as she began her fame, he would never have been able to open Seb's from his own hard work. If Mia gave up on her dreams (which Seb wouldn't have let her do), she would never have fulfilled her own dream either which would have led to unhappiness.
The ending is so powerful because Mia and Seb in the crowd = Mia with her success but Seb without his dream of Jazz club. And Mia with her husband = Seb with his dream of a club. Yes, you could argue that they didn't get their love in the end with each other, but if either sacrificed their goals, then their partnership long term probably wouldn't have worked considering how ambitious both of them were.
An absolutely beautiful timeless movie that I will never grow bored of. The first time I saw it was in a theatre in Edinburgh and I cried at how beautiful this film is. Absolute classic.

We don't really know what their lives are like in this case but we can understand that they didn't chase their dreams and opted for domestic bliss instead. IMO that's the real what could have been. Abandoning the dreams they both sorely wanted in exchange for love. And they're still happy.

Today, it finally became clear that we've parted ways. We broke up on the 5th of July last year but kept in contact, and today we finally talked it out and realized we will never be together. Meeting her was truly magical; we dived into love very quickly, perhaps too quickly, before she had completely moved on from her previous relationship. We made a promise that we would never contact each other again and that we would strive to be better versions of ourselves. I watched this movie for the second time today, and I couldn't stop crying during this scene. I kept thinking about a different future we could have had if we had met under different conditions.

I think this ending, while bittersweet, is more positive than some people say. It's a movie about two artists with immense passion for their work in a cold and uncaring city. They both push each other to achieve their ambitions, but that leads to them going their separate ways. We see this sequence as a sort of dreamlike "What if" scenario, where they stayed together and had a perfect life. It ends with a smile between Mia and Seb, each of them lamenting about what could have been, but at the same time, proud of what the other has gone on to do.

I think that Sebastian made the wrong decision by not traveling to Paris with Mia. I understand that their breakup adds realism to the movie and avoids a cliche happy ending. But I think the last 15 minutes of the movie show that Mia would have achieved a great career while remaining with Sebastian, and that a life with Mia would have fulfilled Sebastian more than running his club.
I sense a lot of regret from Sebastian, from the look he has when he spots Mia in the crowd to the somber tone of his performance. Sebastian allowed Mia and himself to prioritize their dreams, but Mia's the love of his life and I think holding on to her should have been his priority.

Good insight! the movie is definitely about personal ambition vs love and partnership. The way I look at the ending is that, in the retelling of the story, in those moments while he's playing, they both lived that life of theirs together. They both saw and felt what it would've been. They knew they would've been extremely happy and in those moments they experienced the whole thing together. No longer needing to live it out, they agree to be happy in another branch of life. It's not regret he expresses, it's gratitude

@@slateralden4178 Thanks for the kind words! And you have a great view of the scene. Mia and Sebastian living out a life together until Sebastian stops playing is both beautiful and heartbreaking. Their smiles at the end definitely give the sense that they've moved from the shock and sadness they feel when they spot each other to happiness for each other's growth. But I just can't believe that Sebastian can truly be at peace with no longer being with Mia. The fantasy of Mia and Sebastian's life together resembles the life Mia actually leads with her husband. But the same can't be said for Sebastian. We don't see him with a new love and a child. His club's doing well, but I saw him as much more enthused in the fantasy with Mia than in his reality as the club owner. But maybe I'm projecting onto him because if I loved a girl the way he loved Mia, I wouldn't let her go for the sake of a career move.

This movie will always be the most special to my heart. I watched it with my dad, at home, and cried my eyes out for hours at the tragic ending. He made jokes about my crying, making me laugh, and he expressed how Ryan was just a phenomenal actor, which is rare for him to acknowledge an actor like that. And that’s how I knew this scene broke his heart too. Grateful for such a wonderful memory ❤️

Didn’t really piece it together until now, but the actor who played Mia’s husband at the beginning of this scene played Guy the drummer in “That Thing You Do” who expressed multiple times in that movie how much he liked jazz. So it was almost meta to get him for this role AND have him (not Mia) stop to hear the music playing from Seb’s.

I watch the film every Christmas, what a fantastic film, cast, soundtrack, locations, story, I would have loved to see it in the cinema, I somehow missed it.
A love film without a happy ending, I always have to cry at the end, the film makes you forget your own worries, it couldn't be better.

I don't buy "right person, wrong time." If the person is right, there is no wrong time. It just takes a lot of patience and understanding.

Damien Chazelle is a master at making amazing endings. Like he did in both in Whiplash and La La Land.

Everybody above a certain age has a "what might have been" in their past. This hits that as perfectly as I've ever seen in a movie.

She is a violinist and tonight I was invited to go to an orquestra. The curtains opened and she was there standing in the center of the stage under the lights. I don't know if she saw me, but she was gorgeous.

All four of Damien Chazelle's films have a theme of conflict between grand dreams and sacrifices from their ambitions. Whiplash, First man, and Babylon all three films were also great, but this last scene of La La Land is top notch film of his. I've never felt this deep and profound bittersweet feeling at cinema.

This is probably one of my favorite movies because of the ending. I also just recently rewatched The Adjustment Bureau. Two wildly different movies, but the overarching theme of both is this notion of who/what you become with or without the person you think you're meant to be with. It's always a question you can never truly answer, even with the benefit of hindsight. However, I think about this admittedly more often than I should, clearly because I have a good amount of unresolved issues in my past. So movies like this really hit close to home.

it's been years and still nothing can make me cry like this ending.
i started seeing a guy when this movie first came out. he was unsure about me, but he decided he wanted to be with me after watching this movie and realizing that he was in love with me. we went on crazy adventures together for years and eventually got engaged. then covid hit, and we weren't able to see eachother for a long time, until our life paths slowly drifted apart and we broke up. ever since then, the same thing has been happening with every relationship i'm in; our goals in life don't align, so we end up breaking up. i have no regrets, because i don't want to give up my dreams for somebody else, but still i can't help but feel heartbroken that i had to leave that love behind. every time i watch this ending, i relive the heartbreak all over again. truly an amazing piece of cinema

I love this scene so much. Even though it's heartbreaking it shows the truth of many. Yes, in a perfect world we fall in love and stay together and any hardship is easily moved on from and we find our dream jobs and no one ever comes between us. But the beauty in life is the spontaneity and the challenges we face when we think we can't take it anymore. The fact that they're both happy at the end proves everything always works out, just never the way you plan.

Still to this day the lump I get in my throat when this scene crosses my mind makes me seek it out to see it again and then the tears flow. It’s so true to life. Every love, every relationship has a season and a reason. If you can look back on what might have been without bitterness, that’s the dream. 😢

A part of me died the day i watched it.
Impossible to take eyes off this singular film or stop listening to it's brilliant music. "La La Land" is that plate of trauma and piece of art which plays the heart and throws it into abyss, lightyears away. Saw it years back and I come back to the songs sometimes, but not the film. Never again.

The music change at 2:15 just gave me goosebumps. And heading into the dance made me feel like I was watching a classic Hollywood film again. But then to have the rug pulled out at the end to show how they could or couldn't make two careers work together? Equal parts heartbreaking and brilliant.

You ever not want to cry during a movie, so you go back and watch the scene again later and let out the tears?..1:20-1:35 especially that last chord change before the transition. Just kills me. That 6-note little lick on the trumpet, at 1:29-32 ish. Amazing how much can be communicated by music. It’s like that one little section says everything about the movie in less than 3 seconds. The joy, hope, fulfillment, as well as the impending reality that it all can’t last, something has to be lost, the bittersweet pain of what could have been.
It’s funny as I’ve gotten older how emotionally involved I get in movies. When I was younger I was stone cold but my heart has softened a lot over time
