Barbie was pretty generous to men for being a very outwardly feminist film. Ken was, at worst, portrayed as misguided as a result of under appreciation and necessitated emotional suppression from a “young age” (i.e., while in Barbieland) like a lot of young boys and men are in the real world. Goslings heavily dramatized portrayal of Ken was in line with how emotionally repressed men can fall into the alt-right pipeline and patriarchal structures because we are often meant to feel that we have no one to go to but ourselves. We wind up trapped and confused like Ken because we’ve never been allowed to be vulnerable. The movie was just as much for men as it was for women imo.
I think you put more thought into it then him
@@PearlTenderloin yeah his take on Barbie is tethering around the lines of Ben Shapiro's thoughts

I just finished watching "Barbie" and I don't think it was trying to "stick it" to men. It was trying to reflect (in reverse) just what women have to go through living in a man's world. Ryan was really my main reason for watching it.😍❤️
Men also go through that tho. It's not just women.
@@androow1983 Yes, in a different way. There's toxic masculinity and a society that expects men to behave in a certain way. Both sexes are oppressed in their own way, and that's what I believe the film was trying to show.
@@jademusic1211 Then the film was just saying that the only thing men go through is depending on women, when men go through everything the women went through in the movie.
You don't have to include it in the movie, but I don't like how they make it seem like men depending on women or else they feel invalidated is the only thing they go through.
Exactly, I think alot of people misunderstand what it's trying to say, it's not "manhating" or anything, it's just showing the effects of the patriarchy and societal rules that both men and women suffer from
@@androow1983 No, that's looking at it all too simplistically to say that the movie is suggesting that men depending on women and needing to be validated by them is all they go through.😕 You have to remember that the film was a satire poking fun at gender roles and expectations by flipping it on its head, while also showing how each gender is equally oppressed by these expectations..not to mention that Ken's role literally represented how he's treated in Barbie's world..as an accessory, and that that was wrong. In the end, Barbie realizes this and tells Ken that he's enough just as he is. He doesn't need her to be special or feel validated. He is "Kenough". 🙂
Blue Valentine is such a criminally underrated sad movie

Drive is, hands down, my favorite movie. I personally think it’s Ryan Gosling’s best performance. No, not because he’s literally me, but because it’s an amazing story that’s beautifully shot, acted and most of all, scored. The soundtrack, alone, changed my life.
Clif Martinez changed my life

it's like saying "i like Chopin, but not because of his instrumental ballads, i'm not some kind of philistine!" like that's his entire THING. he was the one to invent that!
@@JackPorter you got all that from “No, not because he’s literally me”?
Strongly disagree with the Barbie take but very glad to see someone acknowledge the fact that Lars is one of his best performances, so underrated
Interesting, I actually strongly agreed w/ his Barbie take.
@@narutocoolh and that is your opinion. Commented on your post though for my side!
@@abs.11.11I actually strongly agree with his take too. On the comedy side every scene with ken is great, take him out and my enjoyment decreases significantly. The rest of the cast is pretty great yet isn’t as fleshed out as Barbie and ken. The Barbie existential crisis throughout the film was pretty funny and deep until they have the mom rant bit that goes on for too long and seems like a personal rant from the screenwriters rather than making a lot of sense in pacing to the character or story while made just for applause. The ending seems pretty satisfying for Barbie, then the rest of Barbie land just goes back to normal which is bugging. I for one, didn’t mind the whole “Barbie is superior to Ken” because the toys are made for girls, with the kens as a second option. Hence more girls are going to buy the Barbies over the Kens. Like how boys would rather buy the Gi joes over the Gi janes. Yet by the end of the movie there is minimum character development for the Barbies who go back to being higher ups and treating the kens like garbage, while the kens still lust for attention and acceptance. Way to go Mattel, glad this is a pg-13 movie to at least try not to appeal to kids, even though it doesn’t matter because parents will bring their children anyways. The marketing is basically aiming towards kids and young women [and men, with the Ryan gosling casting🥴] to promote a movie that in hindsight, doesn’t have a specific audience and is targeted towards everybody?? Who is this movie for?? With the weird godfather critic jokes in the film for movie nerds, to the over the top humor for kids, to the hidden/definitely out there adult jokes, to the “being a mom is so DAMN HARD” empowerment speech or whatever, this movie goes trying to appeal to basically anybody and it’s sloppy. Where it makes up for its sloppiness, Ryan gosling gives us yet another great duo with Margot Robbie and they are the movie as a whole. Without either of them this movie wouldn’t be as successful. Still would make a killing box office paycheck though. Overall I enjoyed the movie a lot myself though [after watching Oppenheimer so it’s a given]. Now the pros about the movie: just an overall good time if you don’t read too much into it, which is hard not to. Ask any political activist I know they couldn’t keep it to themselves. Just don’t ask them about Oppenheimer, they don’t care about actual political movie topics.
@@tommysalami586 I don’t have the energy to type out tooooo much since I already discussed this with the previous commenter on HIS comment, but your opinion is your opinion! Though if you happen to be a guy, I don’t think you can really say wether the speech about being a woman was good or not. I don’t know a single woman who didn’t relate to it, and that speech was FOR the women, so therefore I think we are the judges on wether or not that part was good. Glad you get why Barbie was the star of it though, you put that well. Lastly, I think what the film was trying to demonstrate at the end was how little HAS changed in the real world but with the genders flipped. The kens will get as many jobs as women have in the real world, is what they say in the movie about that. The whole movie was gender flipped in that way if you look at it like that. Not even barbieland run by women was equal, which is part of why I’m shocked about how men raged about this movie. It reallyyyy wasn’t as “anti-man” as y’all want to thinkkkk. But I won’t say any more about that since I already did over on the other comment. Overall it’s just a silly movie. I also hate how everyone’s making it more political and serious than it needs to be.
I don’t think they were trying to make some huge groundbreaking political statement. It is to be silly and goofy and fun
@@abs.11.11 Well I am a woman so I get those woman criteria’s and what they have implemented into the movie as well. I just think the speech was much forced was weirdly paced into the movie. I zoned out in theaters when that scene kept going for minutes on end, doesn’t mean the speech isn’t 100% true Just doesn’t feel like a {show don’t tell} typa thing. Since they didn’t do that they should’ve made her point shorter. Also I love your critique on worlds flipped around between Barbie’s and the real world. In the real world men have more jobs, get paid higher, and have more world power. Unlike in Barbieland where the woman have the jobs, status, power, etc. I agree the political commentary on the movie is missing the point and the movie being “sexist” isn’t what we should be looking for. People are probably saying that because in the real world the men are stupid but tbh everyone in the real world and the Barbie world are stupid cuz it’s a comedy film so idk that point. Maybe some people take the film seriously because the film takes Barbie’s story and makes it serious and deep but that’s about it. Excluding the wack ending for everyone other than Barbie who is a true queen, the rest of the film is pretty solid since after all it’s a comedy film with most jokes hitting than missing. And you’re supposed have a good time which I did☺️. Definitely top 5 films for me this year.
I just rewatched Blade Runner 2049 yesterday with my gf. I haven't actually watched any other Gosling movie, to my shame, but one thing stood out to me from that movie very clearly: Gosling depicts more with a single silent and seemingly expressionless shot than some actors can in whole movies. He's a masterclass in subtlety and nuance, the way he's able to create a sort of "empty space" or subtext with careful expressionlessness is just... absolutely incredible. This wouldn't work in something like theatre, Gosling was made for the silver screen.
Thanks for supporting my films and making a video about me, I love my fans ❤

only a man would say that the barbie movie should have been more focused on ken
ryan Gosling was actually only the good part
Why can't anyone say that, including women? I have not seen the movie but focusing more on Ken is different then focusing solely on him. I really like the concepts and issues the film touches on and I do plan on watching it soon. As a man, I hope to learn a lot about the human experience for both genders. Maybe the movie could have focused more on Ken to get it's message across? He seems integral to the plot, so maybe if he was not showcased or focused on enough, the movie could struggle to get it's point across. Maybe that's not true, idk, but at face value that comment does not seem bad. Depends his intentions with that statement maybe?
Cannot take someone’s ability to critique the diversity of character roles when they say the only good part about Barbie was the only man..Maybe that’s cuz I’m a women, but judging by the comments i think I’m the only one who even made it that far.
no no, i agree with you on this. Some of the critiques of Barbie were strange to me.
No, you're completely right! Do not to invalidate how you feel because you're a woman. I think there is a point to be aware of that the majority of people saying ken was the only good part of barbie consist to a large majority of men (who clearly did not get the point of barbie) :)
Although I thoroughly enjoyed this video and appreciated the critique of Gosling's work, I feel like the message of Barbie was severely overlooked.
almost lost interest in watching the video as whole after his comments on the Barbie movie... sounds like someone isn't able to understand satire when it doesn't serve him? he clearly missed the point entirely.

I’m glad someone else noticed this too, I was thinking the same thing
@@4louuit ain’t that deep
@@mccapo9505i mean considering the entire narrative of barbie is to take the oppressive nature of men in cinema-belittling women in roles that make them look dumb or objectifying them for centuries-and flipping that narrative around, i think it kinda IS that deep. he clearly didn’t get it and what he says is kind of funny considering the parts he didn’t like about the movie as a man are exactly the parts that he wouldn’t have even noticed if the sexes were switched.
Thanks for ranking my movies, glad you are a fan.
In all seriousness though, Place Beyond The Pines has to be my top favorite movie of all time, it’s like you said, after watching it, it’s never left my mind and I often think about Luke’s life and how sad his story is. He's literally me, and that's okay. To have an actor who can so flawlessly make us all feel that way is amazing in it's own way, and I can't wait to see what he does next. Amazing video, and I have a couple movies to go rewatch and sob over.
The OG blade runner is in my top 5 movies of all time, and the sequel really did something insane and landed in the top 5 as well.
man la la land is so perfect. Gosling and stone absolutely kill it. Loved the video!(I recommend giving Barbie another shot tho)
I remember in high school leaving my shift at a grocery store to catch the last showing of la la land with my buddies. It was 11 o’clock and we were the only guys in the theater. We all wanted to be ryan gosling. We all started listening to jazz after and watched the Oscar’s together. And we’re collectively upset when the movie got robbed
The Barbie movie was about the human experience.
It was about the female experience. I don't think that the feminist tones were too strong/overbearing and I actually really enjoyed the movie, but there were many many instances when the intelligence/empowerment of women came at the expense of men or just making men seem stupid. The only way that it "appealed to the male experience was by teaching Ken to be okay with being alone, and not finding his identity in something else. "I am kenough". Which in reality is not something men actually want. (edit) Meaning they want something to be a part of and a way to prove themselves, although being told that we are enough is a comforting sentiment.
@@broadbandreworkexactly, imo the Barbie movie shows men that this is what it's like for women.
@@broadbandreworkit every movie there's been multiple movies for women empowerment
yeah he completely missed the entire point of the movie which is annoying. tbh he lost me early on in the list when he made it clear that he hasn't even watched a lot of these films recently, but then to completely and negligently misunderstood Gosling's most recent work.... that makes for a very unreliable filmography analysis
@@abelhart5510you realize that any time men/Ken were belittled in Barbie was intentionally ironic... it was to highlight how women have been treated in media and irl forever. I don't think Barbie did a great job at driving home a lot of the points it tried to make, but the overall point is that any type of oppressive behavior is bad. the human experience is a difficult one and the patriarchy harms everyone. that was the point
Thank you for makeing this video. It has been an honor to have fans like you. Your are the best!
I have seen almost all of them but, this video gives me so immense love to watch all of them. I love how this video portrays every minute details about each and every movie with Ryan's character with so much depth yet in short.
i think u missed the point of barbie
Probably
@@sder Yeah, after watching it a couple times, the way I see it, the whole movie is a condemnation of any system in which one gender (ANY gender) is elevated and the other oppressed. The female-dominated "Barbieland" wasn't meant to portray the ideal society, but rather depict an obvious reversal of our patriarchal society to show people that this system is damaging to literally everyone, not just women. There's probably something about the fact that Barbie (who could be seen as the dominating "man" figure in this reversal) isn't allowed to show any signs of imperfection in her appearance or thoughts (the flat feet, "do you guys ever think about death?", etc.) and literally only shows emotion at the end, where she cries for the first time and realizes how beautiful it is to be human. Doesn't this kind of sound like how men are shat on for being vulnerable in our society, and feel like they have to maintain a certain image/status?
The part where the president tells a Ken that she might let men into some lower circuit courts (but not the Supreme Court) is a reflection on how any advances women are allowed in political spheres/public spaces have to be fought really hard for, and even then, they're only offered an inch here and there to appease them (I really hope I don't have to drop a bunch of statistics here; they're easy to find). The way you and many others felt watching a female-dominated society (rightfully uncomfortable!!) is meant to shed light on the fact that it IS uncomfortable to have one gender so favored --- yet if if was reversed and the Barbie's were men and the Ken's were all women, it really wouldn't upset most people since that's our standard in film and media (and real life). It's SUPPOSED to be icky to have such an imbalance. It just only feels icky to some when it's women and not men in charge, because we're used to the MCs, dialogue-having characters, presidents, and strong personalities all being men (watch any movie that came out before the 70s...).
The "little girls" you mention who dream of a woman-dominated society... isn't that the whole idea of Ken? Like you said, Ken just wants the Barbies how it feels to be inferior, and to gain an equal position in their world. It's not wrong for Ken to feel hurt at being so mistreated, just like it isn't surprising for girls to feel the same way in the real world. Equality is the goal, not a power gap.
Also, at the end, Barbie tells Ken he doesn't need her validation to be worth something, which I thought was a generally empowering message no matter who you are!! :D
Sorry for the essay comment ;P Just some thoughts!! Ryan killed this role and was a brilliant and complex character, as usual. Love that guy. Thanks for the video; I've found some new things to watch :)
(I mentioned old movies from pre-1970 but it's rampant in current ones too, with men dominating the speaking characters and dialogue)
@sder people are VERY mad about your take on Barbie lmfao. It's quite funny to me seeing how many people are mentioning it, on a video mainly around Ryan gosling, they are outraged you wanted to see more of Ryan Rosling in a WOMAN MOVIE! Like yeah, I think it's pretty clear from the video that you only watched that film because you enjoy him as an actor, otherwise it wouldn't be your thing.
You must be a girl because as a guy i disagree Barbieland is a parody of the real manly life. It is more a parody of Matrix. We as guys show imperfections all the time by using sarcastic jokes, we talk about death and other deeper subjects because that's normal. How can be the Barbieland the mirror if the dolls learn about the real world and then the Barbieland becomes a parody of patriarchy. @@littleglitch4324

Amazing video. Made me cry. Keep it up.
It’s incredible how many men misunderstand the barbie movie when it is one of the most simple depictions of the feminist movements I have seen… „I wish the movie was dedicated to him [Ryan Gosling]“ are you kidding me? „A world dominated by women is unfortunately a dream of so many young girls“ hello? What young girls dream of is a world where they’re treated equal and don’t have to worry about their safety when stepping outside. It honestly scares me that men watched this movie and instead of taking the message of the movie as „gender inequality isn’t fun any way around“ taking it as „women want to dominate and belittle men“. I personally don’t think it was that hard to understand that Greta Gerwig was not depicting her dream world. She simply switched gender roles to point out the many situations that half our population actually has to face on a daily basis. And you still didn’t get it.
Yeah that made me stop the video, he's pretty dumb because the barbie dominated world wasnt depicted as perfect either, some dudes have such a victim mentality
Even his take on why alie would even leave the hot rich guy shows that this was written from a douche bag point of view. Should of known by his dream car tbh
As a man, i agree with you fully! I will say most men who think like he does are not to blame. Many men have been fed false news about this movie. Also some women (like my sister lol) have told me since the movie's release that it was made to put down men and it shows how men suck and all that. I think the movie was great and got it's very important and beautiful message off quite well. I just wanted to tell you that with so much news revolving around the kind of feminism that puts men down and not the actual good feminism, it is quite understandable why many men feel like that. Before seeing the movie, I thought it was all about putting down men as frankly that was all I heard about it, so my thoughts before seeing it made me look like a douchy annoying man who is anti-Barbie because it is feminist or whatever. It would be very easy for most people to have viewed me like that, but in reality it was not the case and I just needed to be educated. Hope this adds perspective and shows you that not all anti-Barbie men are complete douches.
Stay is one of my favourite movies, Stay and Donnie Darko are always fighting for my top spot. Simply loved everything about the film.
Donnie darko is incredible
This video got me to like and subscribe. Solid. Thanks for making this.
Terrific stuff! I agree with your rankings and appreciate the focus on haircuts. You get it.
Much appreciated!
I agree with most of the list except you missed it with Barbie, it’s wild how much you missed the point
Yes I agree! I was shocked to hear his opinions on Barbie and was very disappointed as he seemed to, like you said, miss the entire point of the movie!
so true
I disagree, i liked (a lot because of my performance in the movie) but the more i think in it the weirder the script looks,... yikes
Hi woman here! I can't stand Barbie :)
Cool!@@ZombiiChix
I can't believe that there are people like you out there! I'm so grateful! Thank you for watching all my movies! ❤️
this seems like a video made by a 10+ million subscriber channel, so well put together. Loved it. -Ryan Gosling (me)
This was such an amazing video and i appreciated all the work and dedication you put into it
Thank you so much!
i got gospilled from the big short, i thought his character was pretty funny. its also amazing seeing his progression and improvement as an actor.
What a wonderful video - I, TOO, watched all of Ryan Gosling's movies just late last year. I see I'm dealing with a fellow connosieurs of literally me-ism.
Great video and brilliant breakdown of Gosling's filmography! Your passion and analysis of each film are truly infectious. Blade Runner 2049 particularly caught my attention, especially after my fascination with Cyberpunk 2077. I haven't seen the film yet, but Gosling seems to fit perfectly into that world. His innocent yet sad gaze just captures the mood. Definitely need to catch up on that soon!
HAHAHA You got me with the Drive bit you slick SOB hahah, that was awesome.
I actually really enjoyed The Gray Man. May it be generic? Sure. But the action set pieces with the comedy mixed in made me love it
I think your place beyond the pines is many of our Barbie's. As a woman, I have no idea how some of the nuance and gritty-ness of that film relates to someone like yourself, only you, and I'm sure many other men and boys can appreciate that relationship between dad and son, more than any woman could.
Me personally Barbie is that for me, it relates to my experiences and feelings, so heavily that you naming it "eye rolling" was quite a left of field take I wasn't expecting. And the description of the plot really missed the mark.
I appreciate your views, but we differ and so it seems do others too.
I agree. The point of the movie went completely over his head which is a little disappointing considering he made a whole video about movie reviews. I personally think a lot of it comes down to lack of film literacy, difference of taste, and not having an open mind towards the female experience. Calling the script eye rolling and wishing it was a movie solely about the kens just proves he didn’t get it. His description had me wondering if we even watched the same movie.
I completely agree with you. He missed the point of the film and genuinely sounds scared of a fictional fantasy world where women are in control, even though Barbie criticises that world too. It seems like an insecure reading of the film, like he's taken something personally. The rest of the video is good though, but maybe he needs more cinema literacy when it comes to textual analysis of films . Good start.
@@ej1709 totally, like I don't even know what version he was seeing.
Maybe it emotionally effected him enough to think like "poor Ken, he deserves more" which is the psychological aim of the movie, but he just missed the whole, making a connection between Ken's experience and how women are treated in the real world, which is where this take becomes ignorantly misogynistic
I agreeee.
100% agree, this guy just missed the whole point of the movie, probably because he doesn't relate to it at all for obvious reasons
Thanks man, I really appreciate you doing this overview of my career.
No worries!
I find your ranking to be very agreeable but laland on 1 i cant wrap my head around; still a great video
Thank you for dedicating this whole video to me
You’re welcome Batman
Lars And The Real Girl is one of my favourite films it’s so depressing and wholesome.
thank you for spending so much dedication on my work
Such a great video, hope you make more video recommendation videos🙌👍
Thanks so much! More to come 🤟
Glad to see someone acknowledge the difference between bad acting and bad writing/directing
I think he is really missing something about the Barbie movie. You should probably look into it again if you agree with what he said.
What??
@@jackallen5424he’s saying his interpretation with the Barbie movie is lacking. And you should probably look into it again if you agree with the videos perspective about the movie.
Totally agree. I really wish he and all others who think that it was anti man would just try and look into it in a more meaningful and unbiased manner
Amazing work!!!👏👏
Glad you covered some of my favorite roles
It would genuinely not suprise me if the actual Ryan Gosling had an alt account that he solely used to comment "literally me" under videos about him every so often.
Soder not understanding the patriarchy and point of barbie is iconic, lmfao
Please make videos like these. This is amazing!
Thanks for this video on my films! ❤
Any time!
Only God Forgives is phenomenal - I've watched it 5 times and find it gets better the more you watch it

This was the most beautiful, incredible, video about my favorite, beloved, actor. The one, the only, Ryan Gosling.❤👏❤
Thanks so much!
You got me with that #26 I was actually curious what you would have had to say about drive lol I love that movie
I appreciate you for sitting down and watching my movies. You remind me of myself when I was your age.
I expect The Big Short to move into your top 10 over time. Your top 5 is pretty accurate. I might have Blue Valentine in there.
I remember in high school when the girls all liked Ryan gosling and the boys always tried to use any reason in the world to dislike him. It’s wholesome how now that we have all grown and learned to look introspectively we can all appreciate a good Ryan gosling movie
u like him cuz ur horny, i like him cuz he’s me; we’re not the same
same thing happened with justin bieber
i dont normally comment... but the place beyond the pines really affected me as well when i was younger and to hear someone else describe the exact way i would really hit me... all i gotta say is thank you brother.
im so glad you watched all my movies
it means alot to me
