I was fortunate in 1974 to attend a live taping of this show. While standing in line for hours, they announced they were doing “Stump the Band” tonight and potential singers had to sing their songs and several were chosen to be possible contestants. Luckily I sat near the group of singers and got on camera for a fleeting moment. A highlight in my life. Carson was incredible, so quick .
I saw this episode when it originally appeared on TV and have told the story of this one to many people. Johnny was such a great improviser. Can you imagine how much fun that band was? I really miss The Tonight Show - nothing like it.
I knew those girls when they were little girls. Stayed in touch into their early teens and then lost track of them. I never knew they were on Carson. This is priceless. I was always sweet on Susie. I shoulda married her...
Do you want to be professional? Sad, that's how the world sees gospel. Most gospel groups that travel are far more professional than secular groups. Better work ethic, dedication, and often more pure talent. Their work is the same, the standard for their music is as high, or higher. The only difference is why they sing and how much they earn. Many sell out and go secular for the money and fame. Jerry Lee Lewis, the Louvin Brothers, Sam Cooke.. They don't end well, either! Others like Kenny Hinson, the Isaacs and a host of unknown singers and musicians have chosen to serve the Lord, and their reward is eternal. But they are no less professional than anything the world offers today!
