Ode to Billie Joe was a Country song. Doc and his orchestra turned it into a funk masterpiece that would fit into the Shaft soundtrack.

I was so excited about Doc's playing that I couldn't like let Doc outdue me! So I picked up my horn and wailed away on it forgetting what time it was. Then I heard a bang from upstairs from my dad jumping out of bed and running downstairs. He yelled "what are you doing?" This video is a great example of why Johnny was so much better than Jay Leno. Look at the interaction between Johnny, Ed, and Doc. Very relaxed, cordial, and respectful. Johnny really cared for his team and interacted with them in a sincere way. Jay Leno, on the other hand, only had Kevin Eubanks and treated him like dirt. Jay Leno was a one man show where the main character was marginally funny. Johnny was an amazing talent made all the better by the people he surrounded himself with. One of Johnny's greatest attributes us something no one else has proved to do: make fun of himself all the time and it seems he really enjoyed it. He was edgy and laid back all the time. We never knew what pure gold he had in him until he retired and all the wannabes proved Johnny the best by not being able to come up to his shoetops. I never laugh at or with the others. I have just started watching these old shows and I do laugh and they are usually wildly entertaining across the board. What a luck out for NBC. They never could have imagined what they had in 1961 when they first hired him. I hope more of th eff shows fron the 60's and 70's keep resurfacing. When I was a freshman in high school in 1963, my band director, C.I.Carlson, a marvelous musician, drove three of us to Glasgow, Montana to hear Doc perform with the Glasgow High School band. In the first half, he performed the Haydn Eb trumpet concerto. The second half was devoted to this type of big band sound. That was a memorable trip for me !

I am so happy to see this posted here, thanks for that. They were so tight and well arranged it was incredible. But one of the few criticisms I have of Johnny and the show is how often he announced that the band would be playing a song, and I'd always watch no matter who was on to see the band. And, no exaggeration, almost every time at the end Johnny would announce that sorry we are out of time and the band won't play. I mean, they'd be bsing about some lame crap on and on, and I'm like, it ain't gonna happen. Doc eventually started to get in his face about, and would be like "Yea, we are supposed to play, I hope we don't run out of time, again" kind of thing. It got to be a bit of a thing between them I think. Anyway, it really pissed me off because it happened so much. Maybe I can find all the times they actually played now on the Tube.
