I rented a BMW X6 in Washington D.C. last year. The car was repossessed at Niagara Falls where we found out the owner hadn't been making payments. I was on holiday with my family and the experience completely ruined our vacation. We had to resort to taking an Uber to Buffalo where we rented a car from Enterprise to get back to D.C. Despite numerous calls and emails, we were never compensated nor refunded by Turo for that embarrassing and horrible experience.
@@maxtroy8511 Have to agree with the others here. Your situation is unfortunate but you should only rent from reputable people. Check their reviews and stars. When was the last time they rented out? I only hire luxury vehicles from Turo when on holiday and have never had issues, mainly because I make sure to only pick reputable listings. Although in your case it was possible that the person had good reviews and this issue suddenly happened with the car. In THAT case then I would suggest only dealing with hosts that have multiple cars listed. Not being refunded also does not make sense. If you never took possession of the vehicle then you should not be charged. You should email Turo noting that you will be forced to take legal action (bluff) if they do not issue a refund. Essentially the host cancelled the transaction, a refund is required.

I rented my first Turo when i had some work done on my personal vehicle and the turo guy dropped the rental off at the shop and picked it back up from the shop when my car was done. So seamless and so much easier than waiting for enterprise to pick me up.
Used Turo for the first time earlier this month. Was a bit skeptical and worried about how it would work but the host was great (he had 7 other cars for rent and knew exactly what he was doing) and made the process super easy. Over an 8 day period, I saved $200 vs a traditional rental. Deal.
I rented on Turo many times. Many times the host had multiple cars and was running a mini car rental company. Every time the experience was great. The pro hosts have the whole thing figured out and make renting on turo easy. It gave me a chance to drive cars that I normally would never buy or be able to rent. Can’t beat that.
Used car dealerships with excess inventory on turnover might benefit from this handsomely. They no longer have to go out and pay for licenses and escrow insurance. And to shield from liability they can do as taxicab fleet operators do: make each vehicle a separate company tied to debt.
We rented my son a luxury car for his prom last year from Turbo. It saved us so much better money. I was skeptical at first but everything went smoothly.
As an under 25 renter from Europe, I only rent from Turo when visiting the US. All the major car rental companies charge hidden young driver fees, some even up to $60/day which is crazy. Would never go back even if Turo is sometimes a hassle.
I was trying Turo for awhile but started to notice a reoccurring theme with many of their car providers.....they put off routine maintenance on their cars to maximize uptime & to maximize profit. My first bad experience was a Mercedes that was a great car except one problem I forgot to check the manufacture date on the tires of the vehicle. We went on a trip to LA & suddenly a tire comes completely apart. When the tow guy shows up he points out the tires on the car are 6 years old. This happened over & over when accepting cars & it got to the point where it became a hassle when I was in a hurry. I rented a Tesla where while on the trip the doors would not open & the same with the rear trunk. Guess what Turo provides almost zero support. I had a car where the tire went flat & the owner had no jack in the car to lift the car. I called Turo & they told me 'to try my best getting the tire changed & they would reimburse'.....guess what still waiting for that reimbursement. Too much trouble for too little enjoyment.
neato07 I’m sure most of the Uber rides I’ve taken were a loss for the drivers, who often don’t account for the full cost of ownership. I suspect Turo is the same scam.
@@CarlosRodriguez-hb3vq Multiple people are in the comments here talking about this exact thing happening to them when they rented their cards out on Turo. It's basically the business model. Absolutely that could be true if you're doing this with personal vehicles and using ur personal finances. But if you were to get an llc get business credit and get cars that way......
Is that standard practice of Enterprise? You book a mid sized and they give you a smaller car? Enterprise tried to do this to me and I got very angry at the desk. I booked a mid sized online and in-store the sales guy tried to give me a sub compact. I had a printed list of car models from the website and the in-store material showed the car he wanted to give me as sub compact, but the sales guy tried to tell me both the Enterprise website and in-store material were out-of-date and the car he wanted to give me was a mid sized - which it was not!
Turo: Does not have unlimited mileages (bad for long road trips) Does not allow one way (you can only drive around town) Does not offer collision waiver (you can destroy a rental car from Hertz with waiver and pay nothing but not Turo, even full coverage requires you to pay) Does not inspect or maintain their cars (some owners are lazy and car condition varies) Does not have certainty and the reservation can be either canceled or changed (no grab and go technology) Dose not offer standard corporate check in (different owners have different attitudes about your licensing requirements)
My car was totaled on Turo about 3 years ago. Turo took 3 months to finally get things straightened out. They were using a very shady insurance company at the time “the Littleton group”. They advised me that’s in one of the luckier ones, cars were totaled and stolen almost daily.
I first found out about Turo from Doug Demuro's videos and I tried it out in Germany. I had several reasons: 1. More interesting cars than in rental companies. 2. You get the specific car you choose, nothing like "renting car in economy category" there. 3. It's quite a lot cheaper than rental companies. 4. And a BIG ONE: no hidden fees, no ripping you off on location, no holding you hostage over made up damage. I had very bad experience with traditional car rental companies before. It was literally the worst experience I ever had with any business in my life. With Turo, I paid exactly as much as the app told me via credit card. Owner was a cool guy, I had lovely time. No surprises later. Everybody wins. I know this almost sounds like an ad for Turo, but really, I would be very happy if more people started using it and more people in more locations started listing their cars. In Europe, it's unfortunately only available in the biggest cities and I would really like that to change. I'd like to be able to rent Turo cars all around the continent. I'd be so happy if one day it was as popular as airbnb and all the crooks in traditional rental companies went bankrupt.
I love Turo!! I've been a member for over 2 yrs. And I definitely remember when certain cars were highly priced. It seems that the more ppl join, the cheaper some cars get.
it's not just governments. many of these fees are voted into existence by locals who wants tourists to pay their taxes for them. "Need a new sports arena - vote yes on Issue 3 this election".
I tried turo: the guy who rented the car to me canceled a week before my vacation.... I got a way better deal renting a brand new car.... if you read turo reviews all you see is people getting super scammed
This is amazing. Considering how the moment you leave a dealership your car instantly depreciates. Instead of keeping your car as just a liability. It can actually become an asset after you break even
Turo worked amazing for us in Atlanta, we got a little Mercedes gle for like $60 a day and barely any taxes/fees picked up curbside at airport, dropped right back off at curbside to the owner
Aren’t they kinda competing with Lyft and Uber too? I know when I went to Hawaii for vacation, I mainly just used Lyft to go somewhere far otherwise I would just use the bus to get around. I didn’t want to drive
Tried to use Turo in the U.K., owner cancelled the night before and Turo’s call centre was closed. Their website directed me to the us number who refused to help me. Had to rent from Hertz last minute who were much more helpful
Competition helps make other companies change. Other rental companies offer pretty bad deals, but it's the only choice that (most) people have, so they go along with it.
My dad runs a business renting out cars on Turo in Los Angeles. He started in late 2017 and grew pretty fast over a couple of years. Now he has a big parking lot near LAX (LA’s biggest airport) and fleet of almost 75 cars, most of them are leased, but some are owned. This business is brilliant, because with a good credit score you can get an average nice car for around $300 per month. Assuming that renting out such a car would earn you $35 per day, it would take around 9 days per month to cover the expenses. The other 21 days are basically profits
I still find car rental companies cheaper if you want basic transportation. Turo is great if you want something different that car rental companies don't offer and also great for people under 25.
I needed a minivan to get stuff from LA to Vegas for a trade show. The big rental companies wanted an arm and a leg for a bare bones "euro" van. We picked up a very nice Toyota Sienna on Turo for about half the cost and hassle.
As a renter under the age of 25, Turo was a fantastic alternative to renting a car due to the high cost from monopoly rental companies. After a few years, they’ve been including fees after fees on top of their rentals~ it not as appealing as before. You also have to keep in mind that you’re not getting a brand new car as you would with main rental companies 80% of the time (excluded high tier cars).
Turo is amazing, I just finished my 3-day rental with an incredible 2015 911 Carrera s while in La visiting family and the whole experience was so much cheaper and better than a had I used enterprises or something comparable. No hassle and very flexible with everything!
I'm interested in knowing how the ignition startsthe owner unlocks it remotely the first time that the renter picks it up, but after that I'd like to know how the ignition is started. I assume there's a key hidden inside each vehicle which is perfect for people who steal!
When I rented mine through Turo, there was a lockbox attached to the car side. Owner messaged the code via the Turo app, I punched in the code, and the car keys were inside the lockbox. Similar to how realtors keep house keeps.
ALL I CAN TELL YOU GUYS IS I TRIED TURO ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO *AND IT IS FREAKING AWESOME* no credit check no credit card needed, NO down payment or credit hold. It was fast and easy,
Good video, but there’s a few very important points you missed. This is based on my experience, so might not be universal. I rent cars for about 90 days a year, in Europe and North America. 1- Price: For the same car of the same year, Turo is often more expensive than rental car companies. To get the same price as a rental car company, I need to select an older car on Turo. 2- Insurance: My credit card gives me free insurance when I rent cars from rental companies, but not from Turo. That makes a huge difference on the price! 3- Support: If I have an issue with the car, car rental companies have a substantial support network which individual owners don’t. This can save a lot of time in case of issues. Then will provide another car. 4- Pick up: is often at the person’s house. Very inconvenient 90% of the time. 5- Lack of standards: I rented a Model S on Turo once. The owner didn’t bother nor cared that there was only 25% charge left and I had to spend 2 hours to recharge it to get to my destination... at least car rental companies have minimum standards... You should really dig deeper... especially when you’re the WSJ.
Tried it once. Car owner changed the pick up time to later (I had timed it for my arrival at the airport) and instead of picking me up wanted me to catch a ride to his house. Since I cancelled the rental, I had to pay a fee and since I didn't actually rent I couldn't leave feedback for the guy, either. I'll stick with Hertz.
I understand your choice. I think I would also avoid it when it comes to using this rental service as a mean to get to and from the airport. But i have tried the Norwegian version of this app three times and had no problems with it. Once for a northern light trip during a vacation and twice for moving stuff across the city I live in. All three times it was just as easy as dealing with professional car rental companies. Cheers
@@andresk4694 Sure, makes sense. And I realize I'm basing not using the app on one single bad experience, but when I'm traveling I don't want any issues like what I mentioned. I want everything to go as smoothly as possible.
@@vicholtreman1405 Yeah I agree with the point you are making and its nice you provided your original feedback. As I never thought about that particular drawback so I think I will stick with car rentals for tranfer to and from airports and use this service for other kind of trips :)
Real question is: how good is Turo’s insurance? Someone steals or wreck your car, if insurance isn’t guaranteed to pay out it would make no sense to rent it out.
Gotta love how big companies say, “play by the rules”. When in fact they don’t. They’ve become so massive, that the rules don’t apply, despite being under those rules. For new companies like this big companies think that the bureaucracy of rules will choke out competition, when in fact it creates more innovation. Go Turo!!
Loved using Turo when I travelled to the States last year. Easy and way cheaper. This guy picking up from a car park and taking a selfie seems to be making it harder than it is. Not if you are a Gold member of Hertz. There are no lines. Just walk up to the car you booked online and get in. No need to go on a scavenger hunt for the car or take and send a selfie to get in. Bye!

People hate change!
I've rented out Mustangs in San Diego and, upon looking and peoples profile most of them have like 10-15 cars. They do make a living out of them, I love supporting the locals :)
Then they need to pay business tax if not they are running an illegal enterprise.
I run 15 cars and I structure the income as schedule c business earnings with deductions.
When you pay more for taxes and fees than the actual use of the vehicle, that's a huge deal breaker for me. I went with turo.
Why does the CEO keep dodging the question about people having whole fleets on Turo?
Coz he is smart... Then the company issued a statement at the end acknowledging that "some" people have seen the business opportunity...
I was thinking the same thing he definitely dodged that question and downplayed it as much as possible.
Competition: *Exists.*
Rental companies: REEEEEEEEEEEEEE
I rented a BMW X6 in Washington D.C. last year. The car was repossessed at Niagara Falls where we found out the owner hadn't been making payments. I was on holiday with my family and the experience completely ruined our vacation. We had to resort to taking an Uber to Buffalo where we rented a car from Enterprise to get back to D.C. Despite numerous calls and emails, we were never compensated nor refunded by Turo for that embarrassing and horrible experience.
Your anecdote is an anomaly. Most people have zero issues with Turo.
@@bmatthews15 when such an "anomaly" occurs, you'd be best served by a traditional car rental company...as we were.
@@maxtroy8511 but it is still an anomaly.
Most people don't have the luxury of renting a repo car from Turo.
@@Wodz30 Thanks. The owner had 2 luxury vehicles listed on Turo as well as many reviews. It was a terrible experience as my family and I were left stranded in Niagara Falls by the owner and Turo.

Deal.
I drive a Porsche Panamera that sits in my garage most days because I’m away on business travel. But there is no way I’m going to rent it out.
Rick in Texas yeah right Ricky 😂
I rented on Turo many times. Many times the host had multiple cars and was running a mini car rental company. Every time the experience was great. The pro hosts have the whole thing figured out and make renting on turo easy. It gave me a chance to drive cars that I normally would never buy or be able to rent. Can’t beat that.
Used car dealerships with excess inventory on turnover might benefit from this handsomely. They no longer have to go out and pay for licenses and escrow insurance. And to shield from liability they can do as taxicab fleet operators do: make each vehicle a separate company tied to debt.
That is genius. Hopefully someone takes advantage.
Antonio Costa please elaborate more on it? Thank you.
Antonio Costa awful idea. Depreciation. Too much risk. Not enough $$ to be made.

We rented my son a luxury car for his prom last year from Turbo. It saved us so much better money. I was skeptical at first but everything went smoothly.
Sounds like too many taxes to me. Why do rental car companies get hit with industry specific taxes?
As an under 25 renter from Europe, I only rent from Turo when visiting the US. All the major car rental companies charge hidden young driver fees, some even up to $60/day which is crazy. Would never go back even if Turo is sometimes a hassle.
John Weynester Aren’t young drivers more at risk then older drivers?
@@juniorkool21 that's the reason why it's more expensive.
Too much trouble for too little enjoyment.
just like uber, turo takes all the profit and lets morons take all the risk for a nominal fee and people eat it up.
neato07 I’m sure most of the Uber rides I’ve taken were a loss for the drivers, who often don’t account for the full cost of ownership. I suspect Turo is the same scam.
@@CarlosRodriguez-hb3vq Multiple people are in the comments here talking about this exact thing happening to them when they rented their cards out on Turo. It's basically the business model. We all agree everytime we booked car on Enterprise, we never got the midsize vehicle they showed on the website. Hence, Turo was born 😎
Turo:
Does not have unlimited mileages (bad for long road trips)
Does not allow one way (you can only drive around town)
Does not offer collision waiver (you can destroy a rental car from Hertz with waiver and pay nothing but not Turo, even full coverage requires you to pay)
Does not inspect or maintain their cars (some owners are lazy and car condition varies)
Does not have certainty and the reservation can be either canceled or changed (no grab and go technology)
Dose not offer standard corporate check in (different owners have different attitudes about your licensing requirements)

Turo has the same requirements.
My car was totaled on Turo about 3 years ago. Turo took 3 months to finally get things straightened out. They were using a very shady insurance company at the time “the Littleton group”. They advised me that’s in one of the luckier ones, cars were totaled and stolen almost daily.
As a Turo host, I will support Turo 100% percent, not only because I made some extra money with Turo, it also connects people!
This video came out before the covid-19 pandemic so wonder how the Turo business is impact. An updated video from WSJ will be nice. Thanks.
I did Turo, the car owner never showed, I got stuck at airport and got a rental at Budget
yes but at least you almost disrupted a not so important industry!
Cratemoving Sale you cant stuck at an airport. Almost impossible. Travel options: air planes, uber, lyft, taxi and multiple car rental agencies.
I first found out about Turo from Doug Demuro's videos and I tried it out in Germany.
I had several reasons:
While I'm all for this innovation, the government applying so many insane fees to rental companies makes this a very unfair playing field
it's not just governments. many of these fees are voted into existence by locals who wants tourists to pay their taxes for them. "Need a new sports arena - vote yes on Issue 3 this election".
"next step is to take a selfie of myself' lol
Until there's an accident then how does that work. Insurance companies are a nightmare with straight forward personal insurance

I’ve used turo 7, times and never had issues
This is amazing. Considering how the moment you leave a dealership your car instantly depreciates. Instead of keeping your car as just a liability. It can actually become an asset after you break even

Instructions not clear, I rented a person, and sold my car.

I'm more interested in knowing how was the car unlocked
I'm interested in knowing how the ignition startsthe owner unlocks it remotely the first time that the renter picks it up, but after that I'd like to know how the ignition is started. I assume there's a key hidden inside each vehicle which is perfect for people who steal!
When I rented mine through Turo, there was a lockbox attached to the car side. Owner messaged the code via the Turo app, I punched in the code, and the car keys were inside the lockbox. Similar to how realtors keep house keeps.
Newer cars can be unlocked remotely now
Turo is a scam! My car got in an accident and it's been two months sitting in the tow yard, they won't simply care about you!
It’s always pain renting a car from rental car. Turo seems like a nice move.

Rental car companies have money.. they'll figure out a way to stop him
I dont see why they cant make an app and literally do the same thing
