Autopilot vs. The Interloper (Outer Wilds)

  • I don't recommend trusting the autopilot 100% to SAFELY get you to the interloper. The autopilot works great for planets with stable orbits and speeds. With its elongated orbit and its varying speed depending on how close it is to the sun, the Interloper makes for a harder target to calculate.
Here's my experience of what happens...
    More Details on Autopilot Mechanics:
To the best of my knowledge, the auto-pilot is designed to act in three stages.
Stage 1: Boosters correct the ship's movement to match the speed and velocity of the target. This gets rid of drift, so that relatively speaking, the ship just needs to go forward to reach the target planet.
Stage 2: Rockets accelerate the ship as fast as possible towards the target anticipated location. Unfortunately, the autopilot will not calculated for things being in the way, like the sun. It also doesn't calculate for a change in velocity of the target planet.
Stage 3: Reverse thrusters activate and bring the ship to a stop at the target's anticipated location. Again, if... correction.... WHEN the Interloper changes speed, it will not be quite where the computer expected it to be, so the autopilot usually would slam me right into the thing.
