My buddy was laying pipe for a living and the trench caved in...broke his back severeley..in traction at Sunnybrook Hospital for 2 months...rode in Iroc t-tops down listening to this song...died recently of cancer last year...he was my best friend ...miss you Buddy...Tom
The Greatest Canadian Barroom-Blues Rocker of all time! His live shows surpassed/surpass beyond all imagination these video representations in: intensity, energy, atmosphere, raw Rock n' Roll, instrumental virtuosity, and personality. David Wilcox, Wunderbar!!!
Probably the ultimate euphimism for our favourite bodily function... in the format of a song. I cant think of any other song or artist off the top of my head that does such an effective job of detailing all the things that go along with _ _ _ lol- back pain, growing twice as long, etc. Long Live Wilcox and his music. p.s. Check out his annual (free) performances at the Welland Ontario Canal Days festival during the summer. Well worth the trip.
I have seen him with more hair than a body has a right to. A fan for 20 years - don't dis him - ever - he is one of the best we have and HE DID NOT GO SOUTH FOR THE MONEY! He has had problems with alcohol and drugs but he has cleaned up his act. He is diabectic and we are so lucky to have him!
this song encouraged me to do alot!. im a hard worker and this song juss makes me smile!. i work for the oilfield business. and b4 that i was going to school and workin 11 hours....then i was workin all night and sleepin all day...layin pipe for life!. when i saw dave play while i was workin at the kee to bala in ontario it made my night....rock on dave!
I love the stock CBC footage, looks like the beginning of Sesame Street. Everyone needs to see David Wilcox playing in a biker bar at least once...classic.
I remember seeing him when i was 19 in 1979. Back then he had long cury hair, you looked a bit like a clown but in a freaky way, I remember enjoying myself more than any other time i had gone out to see a band. It was at the old Breslau Hotel just west of Kitchener, it's an abandoned building now. Actually I think it recently got flattened
Getting a kick out of everyone claiming it a specific trade's themesong. Truth is, its relevant for any one of us that has to put the boots on and work with our backs out in the elements.
"I put the pipe in I pull it out again My back is so sore I can't work much more I can't get my traction The ground's too wet I take a 10 minute break I smoke a cigarette" Please tell me how that's NOT innuendo...
I love David Wilcox's stuff. There's no B.S. and his songs make you want to slam another beer or 14. I think the director must have asked David to act like a guitar-playin' boneless chicken for the video :o) It's all good, keep layin' that pipe.
I figured it out... He's in the key of G#. The chords aren't hard, but the rhthym is a bit tricky. It's not your standard I IV V blues. The verse is basically G#,B,G,B, C#,B, C# C# B (4 times?) then E, B C# 3times folowed by a D#. The chorus goes F#, C# G#, F#,C#,G#, F#, C#, G#, F#, C#. You can use simple Root-5 (Power Chords?). There is a much better way to play the main riff in the verse but it would probably take me a year to tab it out. Anyway, have fun!! WILCOX ROCKS!! (and so can you!!)
IVE BEEN HIP TO DAVE FOR YEARS !!!growing up in BFLO.NY this is great...get him while he,s here..who knows someday ther maybe Candadians on the moon..god knows the high sheriff of hell is half way there
Saw David and his band during Grey Cup week in Toronto this November. He's as awesome now as he ever was. Although he was the last act in the "Classic Rock" show with Trooper, Loverboy, and April Wine, he stole the show and was worth the wait as the nights last act. And yes, he laid some pipe that night. LOL
I guess where people get there interpretrations of this song from is relative to there own lives and professions, but if you take the lyrics word for word...it's about laying pipe (literally), and digging, so it is really about pipes and utility cables and excavators. But, there is the sexual innuendo side of it too...:)
Holy fucking shit, this is the most kickass song to ever enter my ears. I think the only regret in my life thus far is not having layed pipe to this song! Holy...fuck!
best line "i put the pipe in pull it out again, my back is so sore i can't be working much more i cant get my traction the grounds too wet,i take a 10 min break ahh smoke a cigarette haaaaaaaaaaa wilcox rox
Awesome ..thanks kurdtss.. if he would have been born in Tennesee or texas of somethen like that he would have been mega-huge.,,but then probably wouldnt have seen him every summer at the KEE to Bala..so its all good..lol
@hockeynut474 HE DID come to Stroud in 1988 and he was great. Some woman told me I had a frown on my face. I was paying close attention to David's playing.
@grumble5005 nobody really plays the song in a music video they add all kinds of cuts and other video. and for the synth sound there is his guitar track and a keyboard track.
@Ariosh2010 ... It's totally innuendo! Laying pipe means having sex, period. I wonder if all these other guys really don't get it, or if they're just messin' with us?
Anybody else find this guys facial expressions as awesome as the song?
If you don't love this guy, quite frankly, you don't love rock 'n roll!
Rock on, Dave!!

wilcox rox.why others have not seen his talent and genius is beyond me.he is a Canadian treasure.
I love his facial expressions! And the way he stands toes pointing outwards, funny character, great guitarist, wicked slide guitarist

Man David Wilcox owns. He's got a great voice and this song has such a cool hyper vibe.
Listening to this song helped me get through my battle with cancer.
The drummer is my favourite, especially at the 1:24 mark. Legendary.
This is the kind of guy who should be running for office. Vote for Dave.
love the faces he makes in this video
I remember seeing him when i was 19 in 1979. Back then he had long cury hair, you looked a bit like a clown but in a freaky way, I remember enjoying myself more than any other time i had gone out to see a band.

FOR ALL THE TRADESMEN OUT THERE
I never knew Al Bundy was in a band with the bassist from whitesnake and Bob Marleys drummer before he starred in married with children.
No doubt about it, this man is an entertainer.. LOOK at those faces!
Getting a kick out of everyone claiming it a specific trade's themesong. Truth is, its relevant for any one of us that has to put the boots on and work with our backs out in the elements.

WILCOX ROCKS!! (and so can you!!)
@Ariosh2010 It's totally innuendo. The construction bit was only thrown in there to make it suitable for radio
IVE BEEN HIP TO DAVE FOR YEARS !!!growing up in BFLO.NY this is great...get him while he,s here..who knows someday ther maybe Candadians on the moon..god knows the high sheriff of hell is half way there

Great song/video from Wilcox, it does hold up when it first came out. Interesting thing I notice that the video came from MuchMoreRetro.
nothing says rock n roll like a middle aged dude wearing a dress shirt & slacks from Zellers.

I guess where people get there interpretrations of this song from is relative to there own lives and professions, but if you take the lyrics word for word...it's about laying pipe (literally), and digging, so it is really about pipes and utility cables and excavators. HAHAHA !! awesome comment. spoken like a true 'peg city boy.
go big blue!
The 3rd chord in the verse is supposed to be G#, not G - must have been typing too fast.
Why did they even make a video for this?
TO SATISFY THAT WOMANNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
@joshbezemer what! this is one of the best! I guess you have trouble satisfying that womannnnnnnn
Was that last verse really necessary?

Dinner and a movie?
LOL, yeah me too!! work all the time for her..hahahaha

Boy Ric looks young there
@tetra19 hahaha, agreed, this song is epic, josh clearly has some issues with his pipe laying.
Your Dad?? now that realy hurts, were not that old ..well kindov sortov that is, if you get my meaning EH?
That last verse was certainly necessary. It's the prerogative of the artist anyway.
Leave David Wilcox alone!
