Smart Cities - Building for the Cities of Tomorrow (Documentary, 2015)

  • More people than ever are living in cities, while only 10 percent of the worlds population did so at the start of the 20th century. The number has grown to 50 percent today. By the end of this century, humans will be a predominantly urban species. As our cities grow, so do the challenges. Space is becoming scarce and social tensions, traffic, noise and pollution are all on the rise.
At the same time cities offer many opportunities such as more efficient use of resources, energy and infrastructure. After remaining a relatively small specialty field for decades, sustainable building today hold the technical key for the future.

Still they are profoundly incompetent in solving the problems they have. That architecture is ugly, the people are accostumed to no fiscal responsabilities and they still live in a desert which is waiting to be re greened, but when you have money it's cheaper to import... absolutely incompetent.

Imagine a city of bubbles like sea foam along the oceanfront . For years I have wondered if deeply anchored dome shaped buildings would be able to withstand hurricane force winds. The recent devastation in Florida by hurricane Ian demonstrates the failure of flat surfaced angular construction to withstand high winds. A smooth surface without angles seems much more likely to survive the onslaught of high winds in hurricane-prone locations. I envision a dome shape with possible moving parts to be raised in fair weather and lowered in high wind situations. Perhaps even made flood proof from high water situations.

how would you build that? the reason things are flat and angular is because our building materials are that shape.

The best Ultra-High-Performance-Concrete (UHPC) uses round, smooth desert sand instead of jagged river sand. It is 5 to 25 times stronger than conventional concrete, ductile, and can last for hundreds of years instead of decades in harsh conditions. Its HQ are in Germany and Denmark.

Before even 1 minute in I feel I must enter the fact that I watched a video recently which stated citys don't get enough sunlight for power that fact typically realates to street level, most of the suns energy is shadowed and doesn't hit the streets. We as people have to move toward the light for energy new technologies are being developed to put solar in glass and on roofs, where the roof is a viable vegetable garden. The fasad of the building could have a pivoting solar array that moves with the sun also reducing the heat behind the glass of the building. The array could sit on a system of rails or other tech to move it with the least resistance as we would require power to combat that. This system would allow shade to be where shade is needed at all times of the day and power where power is gathered subsequently reducing air conditioning costs also the system could be moved while cleaning of windows happens.
Or going further if glass solar works well and costs are economicly viable which like all renewable energy has the potential to be. We put new buildings windows on a full pivot so the outside and in could be cleaned via the inside locking at top and bottom when it needed. The outside of glass could generate power while the inside could reflect rays that pass through.

the most important thing is human behavior ,intent and desire. I don't want to be urban or diverse. What about people that want to be more homogeneous? What about finances ,socialism, identity . How can architecture make people feel safe, welcome and at home? What about capitalism . People need to have the space for public, lunch rooms, bathrooms, homeless shelters, sprawl space, room to grow, room to stay the same, football and other sports without cramping, working out , excersizing , traveling . marching , entertainment ,music ,etc.

The life you're describing is the 20th century. Before that, any of the shit you listed was borderline impossible to any one person. You welcomed the technology you were born into but resist the same change that made your life more comfortable than the 19th century.
Perspective can change a lot, considering all your perceived "people's needs" only apply to our most recent century where the technology allowed them to even think of those perceived needs yet those same needs does not apply to all of human history.

Well they are trying but those buildings are endlessly ugly...Perhaps eco solutions and functionality of building doesn't allow it to be beautiful at all. Or perhaps need to give building ' modern look ' by designers make it quite disgusting mess of geometric shapes and structural twists ? If someone can find beauty in those examples more power to them personally I find them eyesore. They are usually almost empty when they finally stand due to price tag and oppressive feel.
