  • It's that time of year again for my annual State of the Collection (SOTC) video! In this watch collection update for 2023, I share my current collection, most worn watch of 2023, favorite watches, why I love them, which pieces have stayed, watches that have left, those on the chopping block, grail goals for 2024, and thoughts on how my perceptions and wearing habits have changed over the course of this year. Following my aim to halve my 2022 collection by the end of the year, and a subsequent massive purge, this year's SOTC is my smallest yet! And although the number of watches I've had the honor and pleasure of co-designing has resulted in a watch collection of its own, this year's SOTC does not include those pieces, which I've covered in previous videos. Join me for one of my favorite videos of the year, and please share your current SOTC in the comments below!

Absolutely love these SOTC’s each year! Upset we are no longer Casio calculator buddies;( I like how the older you get the older the ages of your watches get!! To the point where the blacked out Squale sticks out like a sore thumb! I loved when you said you didn’t need to own a watch to still love it! One final thing!!!! NOT ANOTHER SPEEDY?!?!,?,???£(;;)?

I don't get the appeal of the carbon Squale. To me, any plastic watch (and if you don't know your materials, carbon fiber is 'carbon reinforced plastic', or CRP), just say Casio, no matter who makes it. Nothing wrong with Casio, I'm wearing a Duro as I type, but the look is very much after decades of G-Shocks and all their other plastic cased watches they've made since the 70s. I know that carbon Squale wasn't cheap to make, but it just cheap due to the materials. I'm curious to see how it survives in your collection in the coming year!

With respect, forged carbon is not plastic.

In the mid 90s when I served on submarines, I almost bought a Tudor sub, but I was talked out of it because it wasn’t a Rolex. Also, I was talked into a budget watch with very useful Indiglo due to the work environment on the submarine. Now, twenty-five years later, I think it is time to rectify that decision.

Hi TGV, It's always fun to see your SOTC each year. It's almost like a family album of watches. I still have all the watches that you inspired the purchases over the years. Please indulge me as I list them. Seiko Sarb033, Squale 1521, Glycine Combat Sub, Omega Speedmaster, Omega Seamaster, Rolex Explorer 1, Rolex Submariner. Thanks for inspiring those purchases over the years. My Best regards, John

I have to say that when my watch interest started (start of 2022) I wasn't a fan of your channel ,at first it seemed boring and for "old guy" kinda vibe but after time (same thing with watch taste it constantly evolves and grows) I realized I was soo wrong! Now I watch every one of your videos to my morning coffee and its essential thing , I love the your passion for movies (also as a movie guy) and constant refferences etc. , I love the quality ,the classy feel of your videos which you bring spot on all the time.First I was looking for techincal things etc. now its all about opinions ,history ,experiences and storytelling ,all of the best things that watches carry with them and because of that you are in one of my favs watch channels! As soon as new video drops Im here so I hope you dont stop and keep going! Greetings from Poland mate ,"trzymaj się ! "

I had a total of 18 watches last year around this time now I have 10. Sold a few & gave a few to family members as gifts for their birthdays this year. Makes me happy to see them wear the watches instead of them just sitting in my watch box. Everything is on the chopping block in 2024😂

Fantastic video as always TGV!!! I’m currently sitting at 16 watches. Most in the entry level ($500-$1.5K) and although I like the variety, I think I’ve become more familiar with my watch likes and dislikes and it’s time to start selling some off and move into the mid-tier/entry level luxury.
Would love to pick up a Tudor next year as a gift to myself for my 30th birthday. We will see what next year brings 🙏🏽

TGV, once a year I provide this thank you. You were the one that got me started. It was the SNK809...it was so long ago that I got it for $42 with a discount of course. I am a "low level" collector with my best piece being a SARB 035. Anyway, my point is that I have sought and found my own "water level" with my collection much the same as what I think you have gone through with your collection. Well, thank you again for introducing me to the world of watches. I've never looked back.

I get what you mean about appreciating something without having to own it. I just put my SARB033 up for sale after being the cornerstone of my collection for years. I just don't wear it anymore. Other watches and brands have taken my interest. I think it's good to allow yourself and your interests to grow and change. Respect and appreciate the things that gave you joy in the past, but always keep your mind open to new experiences. The more we allow ourselves and our tastes to change, the more confident we can be in our preferences going forward.

I have a Tuseno Shellback on order- The Micro brands available today are fantastic.

Every year I look forward to these, have been following this voyage since 2015, and you never disappoint. If I hadn't bought a Shunbun and said I'm done and dusted for this year and the next, with my 22 pieces, I'd be tempted to send you a private message about that delightful Universal Geneve. They have been on my mind.
For me, the white one does win over the blue elipse, but that's mostly because I find myself wearing quite a few white / silver / light dressy pieces this year. The Shunbun, Santos de Cartier, Excelsior Park, SBGW231, Max Bill mega solar, and King Seiko LE are all light-dialed sort of dressy pieces, and I seem to reach for nothing else.
I do recognise the "one grail and then I'm out" state of mind. Mine's a Breguet 5157 in yellow gold.

Thanks for an enjoyable show. My current collection stands at 16. I don’t know why people get upset if you don’t like a particular watch.
We’re all different & have different tastes. Not everyone I know, likes my watches or taste in watches.
    It’s perfectly ok.
Look forward to your new additions & finding out what your grail is.
    Paul.

Another fascinating view of where you are going with your watch journey..... The Explorer may leave your collection, but I see you having to get another one.... Can't see you being without it. I have just purchased a 15 space watch box.... the plan is to cull the collection to fit the box!!!!

    I only have three left:
    - Rolex Explorer 214270 39mm
    - Seamaster Diver 300m White Dial
    - Panerai Radiomir Quaranta
    Very happy with it.

As far as versatility goes, I think getting rid of the Explorer would be a mistake. Keep it and get rid of the blue/gold Sub, and get rid of either one or both Day Date's to hit your grail watch goal. Just my .02 cents. Bravo on your slimmed down collection goals!!

Don’t do it TGV! You’re going to miss that Explorer, man. Talk yourself out of that notion. For me, my Rangemaster Mechanical has grown on me. I was critical of it at first (busy dial, gaping hole where the rotor should be), but now I wear it every other day. It does fill that Explorer/Ranger role for me. But then again, I’ve never owned an Explorer. I believe I’ve heard you say more than once that you would never get rid of it. Thanks for all the years of humor and horology. Ciao.

      @heiner71 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Glad you like the Rangemaster Mechanical. I sold mine after two weeks of ownership. I liked the looks and the build quality but could not handle the neutered automatic movement. I think that was a bad design choice. The winding feel was unpleasant and you never quite knew when it was fully wound. I do have an Explorer though, so I can do without the Rangemaster.

Ah my favourite video of the year, and what a beautiful collection again! I'm very excited to see your super grail next year, but I do have a suspicion as to which watch it is! I've set a few watch goals as well for the first time. I'm not going to reveal which watches yet, but the Squale Sub-39 marina blue is on the top of my list. It will be a tribute to this amazing channel!

Dear TGV: I absolutely relate to your fear of the DW290 being discontinued. I bought my first one during a Black Friday sale (because of my love for the Mission: Impossible movies), and absolutely fell in love with it the moment it arrived. It's such a perfect blend of brutalist design, toughness, charm, and comfort. Within days, I'd ordered my second one for the same reason you stated. Truth be told, I'm considering getting another one at some point. It's comforting to know that others suffer from the same obsessions/fears/madness as I do. Also, it's a testament to you that you can appreciate it, and derive as much enjoyment from it as you do from a Rolex, or Panerai, or AP. Thank you for a great channel.

I wanted to thank you for your inspiration. In 2018 I watched one of your videos and you made me aware of the Christopher Ward C60 GMT with a red bezel. I bought this watch and it made me very happy. I was wearing it until I was able to upgrade from there. After that it was an Omega Seamaster Diver in blue and just a few weeks ago a nice Rolex Datejust 41 with Jubilee bracelet and Wimbledon Dial. Alway when I buy a new watch my son inherits my previous one, so it makes the two of us happy. Anyway, thank you

    I currently own:
-Seiko Speedtimer 39mm (blue dial, white and red markers on tachymeter)
    -G-Shock Rangeman GW-9400-1ER
    -Casio A168WG-9EF (vintage gold one)
    Goals for the next year:
-switch my vintage gold plastic casio to similar one - but metal (possibly A1000MGA-5EF)
-buy Cartier Tank Must Large Solarbeat
-finally get a call from AD and get Rolex Explorer 36mm (been waiting for 2 years now)
-If Explorer is out of the question - consider IWC Spitfire
... And yeah, taking a very close look at Grand Seiko Shunbun (titanium, 40mm spring drive, pink dial).

You should probably add a watch with a year complication Tristano. 😅 Love the Luminor and Willard as new additions to the collection, but I'm a dive and tool watch sort of chap, so that's hardly a surprise I suppose. These are always a pleasure to watch. It says something when you have shared your feelings and experiences with these pieces over the years that we also have an attactment to them vicariously through you. Hence the heartache when you mention parting with the Explorer. Even I'm torn on that decision and it's not my watch! 😂 Thank you for allowing us to be part of your journey. Merry Christmas and the best of health, safety and happiness to you in the coming year.

    Hi TGV
I really respect (-and envy) your consequent way of rebuilding your collection based on experience. It hurts sometimes, when you part with a much loved watch - but you’ll get to an even bigger goal...
I tend (-with very few exceptions) to keep on to my old crushes - rediscovering and re-rediscovering why I fell in love with this or that watch in the first place. It’s not wrong in any way, but it surely limits my possibilities of reaching higher goals. In terms of economy as well as in terms of experience.
Still, I’m a happy watch collector too. It’s just different kinds of collectors strategies. The main thing is what makes you happy😊
Have a nice weekend & Holliday, and keep up the good work👍
