10 Types of Watch Snobs (according to TGV and Marc):
07:19 #1: The quartz watch hater
10:11 #2: The luxury elitists collector
12:30 #3: The affordable only collector
    16:55 #4: The investment collectors
19:42 #5: The smartwatch only wearer

29:14 #8: The collector that will not wear anything but Swiss made because they don't want Chinese parts in their watch (LOL if they'd only knew)
31:01 #9: The collector who just sh*t on everyone else's opinion on what makes a good watch
33:32 #10: Collectors who make lists about why other collectors might be snobs

#8 is a very special kind of stupid.
I see these ppl spit their venom whenever someone mentions buying an affordable Japanese watch, instead of some overpriced Swiss watch.
They bring up "Swiss Made", whilst being wilfully ignorant of the fact that only 60% of the watch actually needs to be sourced and manufactured in Switzerland.
There are loads of Swiss watches I like, but I would never consider Japanese watches to be of a lesser quality, and that's why I currently only have Japanese watches.

    • @brianmsahin
      @brianmsahin ปีที่แล้ว +5

Would you believe Alex. I converted! I was gadget mad, latest phone every year, latest tablet, latest laptop, latest smartwatch, latest earbuds. What changed for me was the obsolescence. Everything I bought eventually became obsolete and I just stopped. My phone is now 4 years old and working fine. I still have the same smartwatch but I only wear it when I'm on the rowing machine and haven't bought a new computer unless strictly necessary. Then I found watches. They don't become obsolete, I can hand them on to my children. They have history. A Seiko Navitimer that I backpacked around the world with, a Casio G-Shock that I climbed the Fox Glacier and Mount Tasman with, a Cartier Tank I wore when I got married. You can't get memories like that from an electronic gadget. However you're right. I don't think there are many people who will change.

This video has today gotten me to put down my Tudor and pick up my Flightmaster.
There are so many watches I own that get a bad rep online (and online only - because nobody would ever say these things in person), because I haven’t bought the “correct” choice.
Apparently me receiving a quartz PRX as an anniversary present is basically like being a “watch poor”, when really, I’ll enjoy the second half of my present which is a trip back to Japan. What would I rather own, a £3500 watch? Or a £300 watch I can take away and create incredible memories (and will be the watch I am wearing when I propose there).
I know what I’d rather have, anyway.

Happy to hear these words about us Germans from you two lovely people! I am born in the last few months of the 70s and we are indeed a completely different people now, a fact which a lot of people from around the world don't always acknowledge. Even my parents were born after the war. Also, with Italian roots, it's got to be said that the Italians weren't exactly holding back in their partnership with Germany before WW2, only that they didn't get any of the bad rep from it

When you appreciate watches, you can find a Casio duro and say what a amazing watch and tremendous value, You will wear it proudly and actually be able to talk about its features. I dont dive 1000M dives but I can also wear my Sinn U1 T-SDR for everyday wear and if I feel like a night out on th town, I can wear my Rolex 16710 Coke dial and feel amazing just as I do when I wear my Casio. It is all about appreciating the engineering, design and functionality of a time piece. People that criticize a watch based on visuals, price and or because they dont find value, are best keeping their feelings to themselves. There are plenty of watches to fit individual tastes. I‘ve been the affordable only collector snob so far. Not just for the reason mentioned that I feel I can get a lot more fun from like 10-20 different cool affordable watches instead of one luxury watch, but also because I‘m afraid that I will not connect with the watch and then would have to resell it as used, lose a lot of money, etc. Maybe I need to borrow a luxury watch from somewhere to test it so to speak, but I don‘t even know where you could do that except for friends, etc.

Great video guys! Regarding point number 5 there is a whole generation of people that have grown up with a smartphone/smartwatch and have never known a world without the internet and smart electronics nor do they have any knowledge about traditional watches. Yes there are probably a portion of Apple Watch fanatics that refuse to consider anything else but I think that is a small percent. My own experience after not wearing a watch for 20 years and purchasing an Apple Watch has lead me back into traditional watches and learning about different movements and all the other watch nerd things. I now have a small collection of micro brands, house brands (Islander!), Seiko, Citizen, and one Grand Seiko. So thank you Apple for getting me back into wearing *real* watches! 😛

These types of snobs don't only exist within the watch community, I've seen their kind on high end office chair videos too.
Rather than accepting that they can't afford something, they'll use words like "overpriced, overhyped and overrated" to fuel their own personal inability to buy a certain product.

I am new to watch collecting and there is part of me that hates majority of quartz watches as I grew up with a few cheap quartz because that was all I knew back then. I started to collect vintage mechanical watches because the novelty of gears and spring driven movements and I like the historical aspect of vintage stuffs. I decided to look for a quartz to set my mechanical watches. I've done my researches and I decided that it has to be a high quality quartz movement. I finally bought a broken Seiko kinetic, serviced it, replaced the broken IC and it was worth it. Kinetic watches are like automatics but they are quartz and uses electrical energy from wrist movements so there is an interaction and connection just like mechanical watches plus the quartz accuracy. I am in a honeymoon phase with my Seiko kinetic.

  • @psterud
    @psterud ปีที่แล้ว

It's so true that no one is looking at people's watches, except for maybe that rare person who's really into them. Never buy a watch thinking that you're going to have everyone fawning over it and thinking you're a cooler/better/richer person because of it. You really have to wear something that you really get a kick out of.
I've been fascinated by watches since I was small, starting with Casios (one had a thermometer on it that blew me away and was a favorite for a long time), and have been wearing a whole range of watches over the decades. One of my prized possessions is a Texas Instruments Model 101 from the '70s during the LED boom which still looks good today. Lately, although I have some fine watches, I get a big kick out of the Seagull 1963, 40mm. It wears really well and keeps time better than more expensive stuff, and just looks cool.
If I would call myself a snob in any way I'd say I'm slightly anti-smart-watch. They don't have much character and they're too ubiquitous, which I feel precisely reflects the persons wearing them. Another one would be anti-dive-watch. I mean, come on, how many of those people dive? I admit they can look cool, but they've flooded the watch market. They're a way to kind of signal an adventurer type, but it's a lot like all those people who drive pick-up trucks yet never haul anything, or Jeeps and never go off-road, or small people in giant SUVs. Oh, and I have a thing against watches from conglomerates. That's simply not healthy consumerism.

I was under the weather this morning. So took it slow today and watched this video after breakfast. And it gave me so much energy. I should pay you guys for medical services. (Tiger TGV made me laugh as well 😊)
I don’t consider myself a watch snob. Love my Casio and Seiko just as much as my Omegas for example. Casio for the design and easy to slap on the wrist. Seiko also for the design but also the value for money. My Omegas for the beauty, history and great engineering (I also love Rolex by the way) And my Island watches for the passion that Marc puts into them, and they look brilliant. I wear all of them, depending on my mood or the situation. It’s a passion. Of course if I had more money I would buy more exclusive watches but I wouldn’t be happier. Never bought a watch as an investment but some of them are definitely assets that could be turned into cash if the situation warrants it. You never know.

Inverted snobs are quite big too- also we often place our own budget and values in a watch as being the correct budget/value.
“How can anyone spend £8000 on a Rolex DJ/OP when you can get a Christopher Ward sealander for a tenth of that!” (Maybe because the person has the money and wants the OP/DJ and not a CW)
“I would never pay over rrp for a watch”
(I wouldn’t pay over rrp for a Rolex because their rrp is expensive enough but if I really wanted a g shock that was rrp £140, hard to get hold of and was available for £200 I wouldn’t think twice as for my budget £60 is an expense I’m happy to pay. Someone some extra 0s on their bank balance might feel the same way about a few grand over rrp)

I've got some Seikos, a Tudor BB58 and a Tissot PRX Powermatic and a G-Shock. I only wear my Apple Watch when I go to the gym or am out on a walk/office commute to better track my steps and heart-rate. I'm starting to travel a bit ore now, so I'm thinking of picking up a microbrand GMT, but I have always had a fascination with mechanisms and machinery, so I stick to automatics when possible.

Can't say I am a watch snob. Have a little of everything in my humble collection. If you like it, wear it, wear it proudly. Enjoy it. Who cares what anyone else thinks. The only thing I hate is "fake watches" for various reasons and like you guys not a fan either of smart watches (the closest thing to a smart watch I own is an Alpina HSW, which is just a cool, affordable watch and a Garmin Fenix 6xl for athletics). Another great video. Love you guys!!! Cheers, Markus Be.

Excellent video from yourself and Marc TGV! It gave me a smile as I am wearing my Mission Impossible DW-290 1VS as I watch this! I have gone through various stages of most of these snobberies and grew out of them! Lol. Except for one. I don't like watches where I have to work out what time it is when I look at it. As the meme goes "Ain't nobody got time for that!“ 😂 I have everything from Casio to Seiko, Orient, Hamilton to one Omega and even one Grand Seiko Spring drive. I even have a few Chinese watches which are great quality and amazing value with good movements including one with a real Sellita movement! So, I'm definitely not a snob except for that one thing! Btw, you were right. It's difficult to take off the Mission Impossible. It's just so cool! The tiger is great. You should do it more often!!

I enjoy these videos you two do a lot. I have become a watch enthusiast in the last 10 years or so probably due to my retirement. It is definitely a journey. Casio got me into watches as that's what my Dad considered a high value watch when I was coming of age. I remember us both wanting a G-shock when they came out. I was a soldier and my civilian career was in law enforcement so watches suited to those endeavors were always interesting to me. I have started to expand in what interest me watch wise. I guess it can be different for each person. I kind of just like what I like and look for that in watches that are not ridiculously expensive. they are all cool to look at though.
