Really nice idea for this kind of video. I've been producing for the last couple of years and I think one of the major mistakes beginners make is, that they're trying to get their hands on the "best" software version and/or the best plugins possible (or pirating lol!), because they think that only 'then' they're going to achieve the sound they need.
Many people don't know or perhaps don't believe/understand that you can achieve a great sound using only stock plugins.
I know producers who used to make tutorial mixing and whole production videos by using only free plugins and really cheap/beginner hardware and it sounded great.
So my tipp on all new beginners. Don't go and buy/pirate the pro version of Cubase [any DAW you like] and try to get your hands on a gold/platinum pack of a VST Plugin manufacturer it's not worth your time and money unless you've been doing music production for quite amount of time then go ahead, but for all you beginners out there:
Watch tutorials and only use your stock plugins and maybe download some great free ones. My suggestion:
TDR Nova [best Free EQ on the market]
Lisp by Sleepy Time DSP [an easy to handle De-esser]
VST Instruments by Ample Sounds [some nice sounding vst instruments such ass e-bass and acoustic guitars!]

We use Frequency ALL the time in our productions - it combines some of the best features of some great 3rd party EQ plug-ins and it is STOCK in Cubase. Quadrafuzz and Chopper are really useful as well. I could go on and on as Cubase comes with so many excellent quality, easy to use plug-ins. We would be well-served by getting familiar with the stock content before spending loads of money on stuff that's out there that Cubase probably already does quite well. Dom's tutorials are awesome, by the way!

I’ve exclusively used the Cubase stock plugins for the last 10+ years and never had the need for third party plugins. I’ve recently started using some third party plugins such as Waves Dynamic EQ and few Izotope plugins to complement the Cubase plugins.

Was sorting plugins I'd never really used, specifically looking for a multiband compressor, when I realised the stock one in cubase had more of the functionality I was looking for than the Waves one, or the IK Multimedia one. It was only then that I noticed the MB envelope shaper, still haven't found a use for it, but I might go looking now you've posted this :-) Also, I forgot I had 'Frequency and given the extended features of that, including the piano keyboard reference, it's a blessing. Enjoy your music, bro

Cubase's plugins are out of this world. I recently switched to Cubase from years of Studio One and before that FL. I never expected Cubase to feel like such a step up compared to other daws ( personally ofcourse ). Thanks for giving the hardstyle community a shoutout btw hehe

Hey Dom, thank you for reminding me of these awesome stock plugins. One thing I'd like to mention. That is the video you did using Frequency and its ability to sidechain frequency out of the way of one another. Allowing a more separation and balanced mix. You rock brother. 💪💪💪

I am still on Cubase 5, so I'm enjoying your video quite a lot.
12:57 > The top end is fantastic in cubase. I use the default EQ
all the time when I'm mixing.
Also love that little keyboard on the EQ and it is interacting with the material and
the bands that you activate. Cool idea and really handy.
    Thumbs up from me !

I still have Cubase 5 but haven't used it in forever. Lol
I also have Reason 9.5, Studio One 4, Sonar Platinum, Ableton Live 10 and Cakewalk by Bandlab. I use all of them but, I'll probably go buy Cubase Pro 10. I am addicted to all of them.

  • @ASH-ou4cg

YES! More knowledge gained! So much so, that I hope I can retain it all and actually put it into use! I had NO IDEA that Quadrafuzz could do anything, but add distortion. My gosh, you can add a delay to particular frequency section only?! !!! Thanks so much for your time and knowledge sharing again Dom!

  • @Mr_G

Dom, the vintage and tube compressors - those are exceptionally good!
And maximizer in modern mode, try to use it as an effect in parallel on drums or synthesizers, it can blow your mid!

    • @DomSigalas

  • @kyma1999x
    @kyma1999x 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

frequency is an incredible simple but powerful tool, it takes something from sonnox eq, something from proQ3, also from waves hybrid....
It has all you need to fix problems like stationary waves or resonances, due to very narrow cuts...and it has linear phase and mid side too!
Maybe is not the best when adding colors, compared to other like maag eq or gml, it would be interesting if steinberg would implement something like waves hybrid, another modeled eq type directly in frequency for example tube eq with artifacts....
Another great stock plug in in cubase are loopmash, very creative and manglin', and Midi Gate...it works perfectly!

That super wide trick is very cool. Last year I decided to master my stock plugins and ditch third party subscriptions. Not saying we shouldn't use third party but if you can master stock then you'll know when to dip into third party and actually understand what you're doing. This vid was great. Still plugins I'm not using obviously.

I'm fairly new to Cubase Pro but one thing I think that would be great with plug-ins would be the facility to just select a different tab in the top right corner to switch to any other plug-in that you have in your project, instead of having separate windows for each plug-in. This may be possible and maybe I just haven't found how to do this yet? DP has this feature, it's efficient and it makes life easier.

Thanks Dom, for being inspiring. It's very obvious that you are passionate about what you do and have genuine fun creating with no boundaries.
I've been a Cubase user since VST-5 came with my Tascam USB 1.0 Interface waaay back in the day. :-) I've been a pro user and upgraded every year since.
Many times I get frustrated because the program is so vast I feel overwhelmed when I need to take small ideas and grow them in to something better.
I've watched so many beginner tutorials and then I lose interest after trying to make things work trying to form what I've learned around what I need out of a DAW.
Sometimes I'm more concerned about doing it "right" and getthung up in setting up the initial tracks that I lose my inspiration and have to come back later.
Cubase has gotten much more workflow-friendly over the years. I'm looking forward to working with Cubase 10.5 and my new UR44c. (Finally I've found an audio interface that just WORKS with Cubase right out of the box...no fiddling with software, buffer sizes, ASIO driver compatibility, etc.)
You are obviously very talented and yet seem very down to earth. Practical Music. Your ideas are relatable and something I can hold on to and have fun with! We seem to share the same approach to music "Fun with Excellence". Carry on, good man. I'm really glad I found your channel.
P.S. Your Atari and Commodore 64 shirts are the BEST!
