Another fun quirk- Longo’s HR barely cleared the low wall in LF, a wall that was lowered in previous years for Carl Crawford to be able to rob more homers, the same Carl Crawford who left for Boston in free agency to have a better shot at deeper postseason runs, of which Boston’s that year was promptly ended by a misplay in LF… by Carl Crawford.
True. That wall was changed for CC. Once he left to Boston, he was a “traitor” lol. He is always a Ray. He was inducted in the Rays HOF. Rightly so. Trades happen, but his career was basically over after 2010.
As an Orioles fan, that Andino hit is still probably my favorite memory at a baseball game. At the time, the O’s never made the playoffs in my life. So stopping Boston was the greatest feeling as a fan who had yet to see his favorite team finish above .500 in his life.
The rays scouting and developing is insane. They are so good at bringing up new talent. For such a small payroll they always compete now. Very impressive organization when it comes to that
I'll never forget that final night of the 2011 season, as a baseball fan it was one of the coolest sequence of events to ever transpire, despite the defeat I felt as a Yankees fan. It was a truly spectacular September and October of baseball
This really was absolutely insane, but I still gotta give the greatest run ever to my 2011 Cardinals or the “Cardiac Cards.” Just the entire month leading up to the playoffs was insanity the run they went on, starting 10.5 games out of the wild card they had multiple miracle wins and other teams losing that helped them out all while on the brink of elimination the whole time. It all came down to game 162 where they won but needed the Braves to lose and somehow in the 13th inning the Phillies end up beating the Braves for the Cards to clinch that wild card spot. After beating the Phillies and Brewers, they had finally made it to the World Series against the Rangers. Despite a huge 3 HR game from Pujols in Game 3, the Cards find themselves down 3-2 in the series coming into Game 6 facing elimination once again. The Cards are down 7-5 in the bottom of the 9th and David Freese is up to bat with 2 outs and 2 strikes when he hits a 2 run triple off the wall to tie the game! In the top of the 10th Josh Hamilton hits a HR to put the Rangers back up 9-7, but the Cards rally in the bottom half of the inning to tie it back up. After holding the Rangers scoreless in the top of the 11th, in the bottom half of the 11th up comes David Freese and I’m pretty sure we all know what happened next with him hitting a HR to deep center to walk it off for the Cards and submitting himself in Cardinals history forever after they go on to win Game 7!
i was at this game. ill never forget it. some people say it was the best game of baseball ever played and im not sure about that, but im certainly glad I was able to see it live
Dan Johnson was already a folk hero in Tampa Bay Lore from when he hit a pinch hit homerun against jonathon papelbon late in the 2008 season. Some extra context that makes the 162 homerun even better in my eyes.
I got to go to both games 161 and 162 in Baltimore. Growing up a fan of the 90s Braves and the 00s DBacks, my buddy I was with got me to be a Sox fan due to mutual hatred of the Yankees. I'll never forget that day. The rain delay, watching Atlanta blow a 9 game lead in the final month but feeling hopeful with Boston and NY having leads. Only to get back to our wet seats to see that NY lead fading. Watching Boston blow the game and what do we see on the big screen leaving the park? Longoria's home run. I'll never forget walking back to our parking garage only to hear someone driving by telling me to burn the Papelbon shirt my buddy bought me that I was wearing.
This is a rare regular season game I remember exactly where I was and seeing longo be the hero was icing on the cake got to see longo at Durham in aaa a bunch so it was awesome to see him do this in the most important game of the season
This was the first season I really followed baseball, and between the Wild Card races in both leagues and the incredible World Series, I was truly spoiled 😅
This one was fun but the greatest comeback was the 07 Rockies. They had a September stretch en route to the World Series where they went 21-1. That was an AMAZING story.
This is one of my favorite stories/seasons of all time. They actually made this comeback and storyline a part of the MLB The Show 12 Video Game intro. It's a briefer version of this video, if you have time go look it up.
One of the most traumatic nights of my life as a Red Sox fan. I also vaguely remember the Yankees taking out a bunch of their starters after they had a 7-0 lead in order to sabotage us.
I remember being an 11 year old Yankee fan that day at school before game 162 BEGGING the baseball gods for the Ray's to beat us. Since we were already playoff bound, my last remaining hope was to keep Boston out
The 'controversial' call to pinch hit Dan Johnson wasn't all that controversial. Some players are just known for coming up clutch in the big moments, and Johnson was no stranger to this. While he never had consistent playing time or great numbers on the team Johnson was known for coming up big late in games, and that started in the magical 2008 season when Johnson on the day he was called up from AAA (and was delayed in getting to Boston), he hit a huge go-ahead home run against Pappelbon and the Red Sox to ensure the Rays maintained the lead in the AL East division race. When I watched "game 162" as it is affectionately known to Rays fans, I was surprised to see Dan, but knew we needed a little more magic from him, and that's why he was put in that position. Absolute legend.
This is gonna sound like a joke but I swear it isn’t. I read September in that title and saw that it was posted 11 hours ago, and I thought this was a video about 9/11
with the firing of kapler and a seemingly hopeless SF Giants team, we need a video on the 2021 Giants, probably the wierdiest 107 win team ever, losing seasons from 2017-2020, 107 win 2021 to .500 2022 and below .500 2023, would love a video on that insane team, IMO it is the best year in Giants-Dodgers rivalry ever. Ever game between them was insane that year and ofc the heartbreak ending on a horrible flores Checkswing, call only a couple months after a iffy check swing call on Ruf to win tie-breaker against dodgers in the end, insane team
I really thought this could be the year for us after that winning streak to start the season. Then Springs goes down. Then Shan O Mac. Then the Wander thing. Them B Lowe. Just feels like it's never meant to be for us.
Also I think it is notable that the red sox orioles game ended only 3 minutes before the 2nd longoria homerun. This video makes it seem like it ended way beforehand.
As a Sox fan, I didn't expect to get attacked like this on a Saturday dammit 😭 But I'm glad these damn Rays never amount to anything while we got our revenge in 2013 and 2021.
a great video, however the greatest comebacks were the 2011 cardinals, the 1951 giants. boththose teams won a division and went to the world series.just getting a wild card is not quite the same.
I got a better come back for you. The 1995 Seattle Mariners. As I recall, the Mariners were 12 or 13 out late in August and they came all the way back to win the division against the California angels.
Why not keep the wall higher so the homers don’t need to be robbed and instead he could rob doubles without his failure being a run?
i love this so much
How was it a misplay ? I know it goes with your clout story but please he came up short on a dive
SB nation Deep Rewind did it better honestly.

The walkoff by Longoria is without a doubt one of the most iconic ever

As a Red Sox fan, I'll never forget our collapse and the Rays' comeback. It was INSANE! Those two last games were insanity.
That year was such pain
beer, chicken and video games
The rays scouting and developing is insane. They are so good at bringing up new talent. For such a small payroll they always compete now. Very impressive organization when it comes to that
Could you imagine if both the Rays and Cardinals made it to the World Series that same year?
Regardless it would still be a great world series.
@@bigrich6075Thank God for The Red Sox collapse, because as a Braves fan no one remembers we blew a 8.5 game lead that month.

Longoria has always been one of my favorite players. This year he was just a beast man. What a way to make the playoffs!

MLB 12 the Show intro vibes with this video
As an Orioles fan, I remember that game 162 fondly. We carried that momentum into an unbelievable playoff berth in 2012.
And Boston carried their momentum as well. 😂
2011 was a great time to be a Cardinal fan. I was 8 at the time and remember staying up late with my dad to watch game 6 then game 7

What a story. This is why we love baseball.
I grew up near st pete and have been going to games at the trop since 07 hearing the names mentioned in this video is making me feel old and nostalgia

Wonderful watch as always, anxiously awaiting the Yamamoto video!
It's crazy the Rays made that comeback in Game 162, down 7-0 in the 8th!
This season made me watch baseball more I enjoyed 2011 in general and it’s why the Rays are my 2nd favorite team
The John Jaso update is very important to me, thank you

the Orioles ended up winning about 2 minutes before Longo hit the Home Run, it was beautiful

Also I think it is notable that the red sox orioles game ended only 3 minutes before the 2nd longoria homerun. This video makes it seem like it ended way beforehand.
Really liked Evan Longoria. Today he might be the only MLB player who swings an ash bat and not a maple bat.
Thank you for reminding me of Matt Garza! Immaculate grid beware
