Like Shostakovich's 15th, this Rautavaara's final symphony is also a farewell work, designed by a composer with quite happy and successful artistic life. The symphony has formal similarities with Rautavaara's 7th, yet it is a bit more clear-cut dissonant and really ends in the best way possible, with amazing fanfare happy end. It is an enjoyable symphony of an old master.

Can't stop listening to the that climax in the 4th movement, it is quite literally something else!

My favorite ending Rautavaara ever composed. That D6add9 chord is such a perfect resolution, especially with the one F# in the 1st Trombone. Wonderful Picardy 3rd

Absolutely incredible. I’ve been a casual fan of Rautavaara for some time but never took the time to dig too deeply into his music until recently. I’m glad I have

Supernatural. I hear it, at least, one time each week. I can´t read the score, but can feel it. Its something like a voyage to a place where you find people with higher thoughts: maybe you won´t understand these people, but will know how far can go human thoughts. Rautavaara: a life that was worth it.

Thanks so much for this! Rautavaara is one of my favorite composers, and his beautiful 8th was my introduction to his work. Sadly I discovered him just a year after his death.

In the very beginning, it's like you're on a gondola above the clouds. It's a masterpiece!

Ich bin begeistert von seiner Musik. Habe ihn erst jetzt entdeckt. Der junge finnische Maestro Klaus Mäkelä hat eins seiner Stücke dirigiert.

    Thanks for adding the score.
Appreciated. Many of us can follow a score, as distinct from 'reading' a score (as this conductor does with new music INSTANTLY). But it adds to the enjoyment.

Along with his 7th and his first piano concerto, this in my opinion is Rautavaara's greatest masterpiece.
    Unvaluable upload!

You should listen to his operas, and also his vigilia. His choral music is really underrated

He has definitely been a fan of Bruckner, his 3rd symphony especially has been said to be Bruckner -influenced (which was also very untrendy at the time)
