I first heard about usury as a kid during a bible seminar by a very holy priest, at that point i took it to heart very seriously. As I got older trying to reconcile my faith with the outside world I wrongly started to think that maybe the priest was exaggerating and was unpractical and didn’t think of it as sinful or problematic even though I didn’t engage in it (I will admit however that I did accrue interest from my savings account although very negligible, still doesn’t justify it nonetheless). And then years later I came across E Michael Jones and he perfectly explained what usury is, it’s impact, it’s history and that totally made sense. Back to full circle just ordered a copy of Barren Metal!!

@@Recusant_ Vix pervenit is pretty clear I think when it says (I'm paraphrasig) 'any interest earned intrinsic to a given amount is usurious'

@@Recusant_ fair point, but did we earn that interest? How is a bank able to give you interest? Using money generated from usurious practices

@@Recusant_ A good point again, but does that justify it? The Vatican is unfortunately involved in several malpractices antithetical to church teachings, it may take a fair bit of work to undo a lot of those practices in the Vatican Bank also factoring in our current economic system that treats debt and usury as fundamental. Its one messy web!

@@Recusant_ if you are unaware of it you are not sinning, that is a consequence of the present structure of economics, its so complicated that the average person is spared of sin. There is also lack of awareness in what the church teaches regarding usury in the community. But once you aware of it then its a different story

@@Recusant_ do what we can do, I switched to a current account instead of a savings account to avoid interest from accruing. Give away any interest accrued thus far to a charity. Invest in stock which is perfectly fine, the risk is shared therefore not usurious. We can only do so much but its one step at a time.

Its like a game of musical chairs. There arent enough chairs for everyone. It turns the whole of society into a bucket of crabs. We try to claw our way out of the bucket and push each other down. It creates an ugly world. 😢

Finally a nice answer to usury (I've seen too many long-winded explanations that leave more questions than answers)

I perfectly understand that investing capital via an equity investment into a business isn’t usury, but what about lending to a business? For instance, buying corporate bonds: this results in the funding of business activities like an equity investment would.

You answered yourself, it's an investment because it's to help generate value.
Lending money for food does not generate value, for example.

I bought my house for 150.000 20 years later I sold it for 300.000 is that usury?

Not usury, would just be an investment or you could say partially due to inflation

      No, it's inflation.

I'm pretty sure that you're OK with a mutual fund since it's really just a diversified set of investments. However even then it could possibly be considered sinful if the companies one has invested in have immoral business practices.
