To my understanding, though Chris does use a lot of synth but he likes using a lot of traditional noise for certain instruments, like the guitar, who is played by his friend. Said friend is on some wild crack honestly, he plays the guitar in a way that makes Jimmy Hendrix proud.
For more information listen to Chris' commentary on his own music, he usually explains what he has in mind and what he even put in the music instrumentally. He's also really active on his channel so its easy to get an answer from him too.

Thank you for going through the RoR OSTs, they're both amazing. I feel like I learn so much from watching your videos, and notice details I never thought about before! It's one thing to listen to music on your own, another to have someone explain why certain sounds are used, and how they can carry so much meaning and emotion.
I was wondering if you've ever listened to the soundrack for Hyper Light Drifter? The OST is made by Disasterpiece, who also composed the soundtrack for FEZ and the movie It Follows. If you haven't I'd strongly recommend it!

Another really good ost from Chris where he actually has two members from a band they were all in, a guitarist, and a drummer with his synth. "Through a glass/mirror darkly" is a phrase to refer to someone not getting a full clear view of reality or even a distorted untrue view, like looking at reality through a dark cloudy mirror.
I only know this because I read the book 'a scanner darkly'

A Glacier Eventually Farts with the dialogue, is actually from a nature documentary, called Burden of Dreams. Werner Herzog is the one speaking.

About "The Rain formerly Known as Purple", You should watch video about making of this song. If i remember correctly there is no guitar here, only synths.
