We visited Iceland last month (September 2022). We had beautiful weather, until the day before we flew home. That morning, it was rainy and windy in Reykjavik. We decided to drive to the south coast and see if the weather was any better. NOPE... The first stop we were going to make was crazy. I parked into the wind. My wife could not push the door open. We have never experienced that before in our lives. It was crazy.
We had some terrible weather in September. There is a reason I haven't done "what a red alert looks like" I can't get in or out of the car in weather like that 😅

It was so tough on the windy days, the wheels spinning round (gyroscopic effect) helped a bit. but means you contact stop. It was almost impossible, I could not stop riding until off the pass and in-between buildings. It was the hardest and most dangerous riding that I've ever done in my life. It was life treating is blown down into the sea or onto into the path of oncoming traffic. I laughed so hard my cat got scared! And I got caught in a severe storm leaving Vik. Could not see 5m in front of the car, still we drove very slowly towards Reykjavik on Rt 1. Went around a mountain and just like that the storm subsided. In front of us, behind it there was a huge white out storm. Snow blowing everywhere. Iceland is the best place in the world.
When we visited in March 2019, we got slammed with an Orange Alert and had to stay in place for a day. That was the day we discovered the magic of Icelandic Hot Dogs! Granted, makes it hard to go hunting for northern lights.... :)
Oh yea I had one chance to hunt for the lights. The forecast was great, but then, clouds. Would have had to drive 60 miles. I might have to start getting serious. I have a video in the making all about making the famous Bæjarins Bestu at home in the works.

Wind is the defining characteristic of Iceland weather. It is so bad so often.
For sure. Perfect calm is an absolute exception in Iceland. It does happen and when it does we rush to enjoy it 😅
