It’s so refreshing to see that you really think about what styles and brands work for your lifestyle, and that you don’t treat luxury purchases like “fast fashion”. I choose Chanel. I love the quilting design. I love the asmr of the woven chain. I love the elegant crossbody option. I love playing with my Chanel changing to different options. I also appreciate the history of Chanel and Karl behind the bag. I think plain bag like Hermes is available cheaper versions elsewhere. Plus Hermes is not easy to buy in store. Such a hassle to play those Hermes games. I just bought two Chanel this year. Medium lambskin in jan and jumbo caviar in feb because of the price increases. Both bag is perfect without any quality issue. I think the 2023 quality has improved alot. There is not even a squeaking sound on any of the chains. Both are made in france and both are made in 2023.
Of course Chanel is part handmade. And Hermes is part machine made. Chanel 2019 & vintage Chanel has amazing quality. My vintage pieces have such thick lush lambskin. So no, we are not just paying for "cc logo" (if you're referring to these days Chanel that's a different story).

I own both brands and will probably tell my own story at some point, but I am very happy to see how Hermes wants their customers to enjoy their pieces for life, and actually have the means to service and restore their products across the different categories, not just handbags ❤
I would choose Chanel. It’s still much easier to get what you want in Chanel than Hermes. In Hermes, you almost never get offered your first choice. People rarely have the patience to wait for their dream bag while keeping spending money on RTW, Jewelry and homeware which you could only recoup less than 40% of what you pay for. But I agree Hermes service and quality are much better than Chanel.
I think I’m a bit of an oddball in that I’ve had a fairly easy time shopping with Hermes and have never bought anything that I didn’t absolutely love simply to build history. I suppose that’s why I don’t have a bias about the shopping experience. However I’m aware this isn’t the norm for many. You raise a valid point!
I appreciate how you really take the time to talk through pros and cons of different aspects and not just the brand as a whole. So many people have made statements about sticking with one brand without providing any context.
My dream bag for years was a black Chanel classic flap. I got one in 2018 for half the current price. I have one non-quota Hermes bag, and my new dream bag is a brown Birkin 30. Not sure if I will ever get one, but that is why it is called a dream. ❤

I own four Chanel bags. All are flawless. My buying experience was great for the three I bought in the boutiques. The vintage one was from FARFETCH and in beautiful condition and it is a canvas seasonal. I have always loved the brand due to it’s history. I was inspired to get flaps due to mod shots of trendy girls rocking them. This was before influencers. Some women think the flaps look like grandma bags, but I think they look fresh as ever. I do not own any Hermes yet, but I do like the brand. Their bags, scarves and porcelain are to die for.
Since you've brought up this topic, I am gonna add my 2 cents. I too would pick Hermes over Chanel, except Hermes also hits the first mark for me - the aesthetics. And I would also add a weird one to the mix - Hermes is not as common on the streets. At least not here in DC. I see a lot of Chanel flaps - real ones as well as fake. I rarely spot a K or a B tho, let alone lesser known H bags. It's important to me not to be too mainstream (I do have a reissue 226, so I guess I could be called a hypocrite). Anyway... since you mentioned what a superb quality Hermes has and their amazing customer service, I have a story to tell. About 3 weeks ago I pulled out my Paris loafers to polish them. That's when I noticed that the soles started to come undone all around. It looked as if the glue dried out and soles started separating. Horror! I have only had them for a year and wore them 2-3 times in dry conditions only. So I called the store and they told me I could bring them in. I went there the same day and the store manager herself took them from me. It took about 15 minutes for the whole process, but essentially she took some photos and filled out a form to have them sent to Paris. She said their shoe artisan would have to look at them and determine if the damage happened due to a manufacturing flaw or me misusing them (she didn't actually use those words, but that was the gist of it). I haven't heard back from them yet, she said it would take about a month to hear back. And once they determine what happened, they would contact me and tell me what's going to happen next. If it was a manufacturing flaw, which I wholeheartedly believe it was, then they will repair them at no cost. She said I would have them back, repaired, within 4 to 6 months. Interestingly when I asked her if they could swap the buckles for a different finish, she didn't say it was impossible, she said she would put a request in for that. Whenever they contact me I will find out how much that would cost if it's possible to do. You would think that after what happened to my loafers I would be bitter about it and would reconsider ever buying shoes from Hermes, but no. I left with a pair of day sneakers that I could never find with gold hardware but they had them in the back this time. It's all due to their pleasant customer service, how they treat their customers, and the after purchase care you get for their products. I am also considering sending my Kelly for a spa soon, I just can't imagine her being gone for so long, lol. Oh btw she said they no longer send bags to Paris for spa services. They now do it in Beverly Hills, in case someone was wondering. So it takes about 4 months instead of 6 to get your bag back now (if you're in the US). And as for Chanel, I hear horror stories about their quality not being nearly as good as it used to be, and no after-purchase care available. At these prices it's really unacceptable to me. I do love their flap bags in lambskin, but if I ever buy one it's going to be a vintage - with actual gold plated hardware and flawless stitching.

It’s so funny because I’ve heard both bags be described as “matronly” and I can understand both ways! I think it’s all about styling at the end of the day. I remember wearing this long dress with my Chanel beige Clair Classic flap and looking the mirror and going “why do I look so old?!” 🙈 And then there was another time I grabbed my Birkin with a dainty little outfit, and I looked like I had borrowed my mom’s bag and was playing dress up! 😂 But most of the time, they work for me. 😉 Thanks for sharing your POV!
Personally I have no interest in Hermes bags. For one, I find it amazing that the brand has shown absolutely no design evolution over decades. There are three designs it keeps churning out year after year. So yes, the quality might be great but isn't design always the first to attract one's attention? Only after you see a great design is when you consider purchasing it and look into it's quality. Chanel on the other hand has sustained the classic designs for decades but constantly work on new designs season after season. You can always purchase a beautiful seasonal bag that will never be repeated again and so becomes a unique one that you won't see everyone carrying. I love that about Chanel! As for the experience, I don't want to play an entire game before a brand will decide whether I can or cannot purchase something I want!!
I just want to correct this misinformation. Hermes has new designs every year and you can see the new bags they just showcased on the runway recently. A lot of the more fashion forward customers have the new bags from Hermes, but what you tend to see on social media are the same old ones, I suppose because they are the most popular. Perhaps I can do a video on this season’s new Hermes bags if there’s enough interest.

I would love to see any Hermes bag (outside of Birkin, Kelly and Constance) that you have personally appreciated the design of and purchased to add to your collection? (Garden Party and Picotin don't reflect any design evolution anyways!!) In contrast, we can all name 10-15 bag designs of every other luxury brand that have been popular in the past decade.....Chanel, Dior, Gucci, Fendi, Prada, YSL etc. You may not agree but thats ok :)

Hermes. If I am paying those prices, it better be handmade. Each stitch is made by an artisan trained for so many years. I love the stories behind each scarf design. Chanel bags are mostly machine made and have become quite ubiquitous and commonplace. I think that's the reason they are raising prices significantly to have the exclusivity of Hermes.
Oh gosh, don’t get me started on the Hermes scarves! I’m obsessed! 😍 When I’m bored, I read all the history and descriptions of each scarf design online. 😂
Great video. Funny thing is I have had quality issues with Hermes..one of my sneakers had to be returned as the ink leaked all over the shoe. One of my handbags is already looking so worn out when I’ve been using it reasonably gently. As far as my flaps are concerned I have had no issues. I think the two bags styles are so different it would be difficult to choose but style wise I would go for the Chanel classic flap. The Birkin and Kelly seem more casual and very artisanal. Hermes also makes it so difficult to get a bag that it is so much easier to get a Chanel flap. Both are not worth their priçe ..luxury rarely is.
Although i do not have Hermes, in terms of quality and like you had said, i never hear of anyone complaining about Hermes's quality, so hands down on Hermes. Maybe Hermes for this year's B'day...will see. Yeah do share here if you have any purchases from Paris. Love to watch that.
I hear more and more that Chanel is reserving certain items for only their VIP clients and that many SAs are now pushing RTW and jewelry before making a bag available to newer customers. Do you think this is true?
@@hellocatwalkcity I’m not sure because I stopped buying Chanel last year since I have a good collection but I was able to get the bags I wanted even tho it took some time asking different SAs I knew. I tried the Hermes game and although I bought the things I want, in the end I don’t have the patience without knowing the end goal in sight. I generally don’t like fine jewelry or ready to wear as well and I refuse to buy just to get a bag so it’s a losing game for me.
Oh! And I love my mini Evelyne as a simple crossbody… and there are some beautiful bags with straps from Hermes… the Constance being one of the popular ones (which I don’t own). But just something to consider! 💕
Aesthetics/Style? Hands down to Chanel, bags, shoes and tweed jackets. Purely because it suits my style. Hermès, I like their sandals and rose gold fine jewelry such as CDC and Finesse bracelets and rings. I’m the same as you. It would be Hermès for the same exact reasons. Actually I am not planning to buy more from Chanel, like you, I have enough bags and I’m not interested in their rtw at all. Maybe some fj but still I prefer Hermès in that category. I have a good time shopping at Hermès, I really love their bags and own a few. Plus, my husband loves Hermès too, it’s a win win. I’m at a point where I’m totally at the end of my handbags collection and I don’t even mind waiting for the last bag I want. Bag or no bag, I will continue to shop at Hermès.
I 100% thought you would say Chanel based on your bags, and I am so satisfied to hear you say Hermes for all of the same reasons that I would choose Hermes if I could only choose one. I splurged big time on a cashmere sweater, it is low key without any big logo but gorgeous and thick and timeless. I don’t own any of their bags yet but have a few scarves, small jewelry pieces, one pair of booties that won’t wear out and a sweater. It is the experience and quality. Absolutely, I think if we’re only talking about the bags, my collection speaks for itself! 😂 I have way more Chanel than Hermes but yes, overall, I feel Hermes is the better buy if I look at the total experience and offering. chanel started to be like burberry.. they had such a good classic item and used to be a reputable brand. but nowadays they tryna be in the mass market. if I pay $10k for a bag, I better get a good damn quality bag and good customer service
So interesting you say this because if you’ve noticed, Burberry is now trying to reinvent itself. The CEO of Burberry recently stated they want to be known for more than their classic trench coats. Hiring Daniel Lee was a big move for them.
One straightforwardly increases prices ignoring clientele concerns towards quality. The other makes two beautiful bags (B and K) that are mostly unavailable but draws people towards the brand in the hope of getting “offered “one and the offer may not be necessarily what the client desires. Basically, sell everything else to the client but for the B or K or C. Am Keeping aside especial journeys. One has been doing it wrong caught in the web of exclusivity, the other has attained the exclusivity but cloaked in mystery. For now, I evidently know the brand to move away from bidding 👋 Consistent lack of quality is disrespecting the clientele.
@@silkymeadows126 Good point. I do think most ppl will compare the Birkin with the Classic flap, only because they’re so known from each brand but you’re right, a tote and a shoulder bag are not a fair comparison.
Hermes seems a better experience at that price point of the two. Chanel after sales seems pretty bad. I’m having an issue with a ysl bag from my heavy use of it and the SAs at the Bloomingdales boutique we’re very helpful in seeing if they can get it repaired. Chanel seems reluctant to do that from the stories that I’ve heard.
It’ll be interesting now that the prices are pretty much level between the two brands. Hermes may actually benefit in the long run with Chanel’s price increases. 🤔 We’ll see. As for your YSL bag, I do hope they’re able to take care of it for you!
Heya! Do u know how's the aftercare of other luxury brands compared to Hermes n Chanel? Like for example LV, Celine, Fendi etc? Do they take more after the Chanel approach to aftercare?
For me it's hermes.i have bags and shoes from both brands.but the chanel price hike is ridiculous. However the games that hermes plays is also so annoying. That said I do enjoy the bags I have and given the opportunity will buy again.
Hermes will be my choice as well. I like their classic and understated design. I don’t think Chanel bags are worth the amount they are charging but that’s just my opinion.

Kind of unrelated but as someone who has only purchased 2 things from Hermes, if I am interested in the Evelyn 16, how should I go about asking in store?
You just need to ask the sales associate if there are any mini Evelynes available. I had only purchased two items as well before asking. I had no purchase history in the US (only in Paris) but I walked into my local store and asked. They had a few available but not in the color I wanted so I told them I’d wait. They took down my info and eventually called me a couple weeks later to come pick up mine in the gold color. Bingo! 👌 Good luck!
From someone, like me, who knows really nothing about handbags, but just luxury brand names and the aesthetic value...I would go all the way with the Hermes because it looks far more appealing as to the shape and design. Looking at the two, the Chanel looks like a pair of gym socks while the Hermes a nice wool sweater 🤣

My one and only shopping experience at Hermes was ok. Much prefer Chanel shopping experience. The sales associates are more into showing me different items and styles in Chanel. I went into H told them what I was looking for brought them from the back. They did not offer other colors, styles etc. I bought a watch and belt. They did not seem too excited about their role. All other houses are super helpful and excited to show you new items-not H. Kind of a yawn
Oh well, then I can understand your sentiment. If the sales associate isn’t working to make your shopping experience a pleasant one, then it’s just meh. I get it. I have to say, every time I’ve shopped at Hermes (across 4 different cities with different SAs) I’ve always encountered such friendly and eager service. My local Hermes SA is always showing me what’s new and sharing the history behind each item. I quite like it because I learn something new each time. I also receive this type of service with my now Chanel SA. Not all prior we’re so good. I suppose it’s hit or miss depending on the individual SA. I wish it were more consistent across the board.
Not all Hermès bags are desirable. Only Birkin, Kelly and Constance that are sought after. I would not choose Picontin, Garden or Bolide over Chanel classic flap.
Totally understand. To be fair, I think if you’re going to consider the Picotin, Bollide, Garden etc, it would be more appropriate to compare them to other Chanel bags… not the Classic flap.
I own both brands, but I love top-handle bags, so I was never interested in the Chanel classic flap, just like I was never interested in the Hermes Constance. I already own a coco handle, a trendy cc, and a Dauville tote from Chanel, all in my favorite color pink, so I think I already have all I want from Chanel. Now that the prices aren't that different, I would rather spend my money on another Hermes Birkin or Kelly, considering the higher quality in both leather and craftsmanship.
From an aesthetic standpoint, I'd choose Hermes Kelly. It's beautiful without looking overly feminine. The quilted design of Chanel doesn't appeal to me.
I texted my Chanel SA about the price increases. His reply…”Yes, So far my clients are ok with it. It’s odd because the clients who complain the most shop Hermès and pay more lol. So bizarre. Recently my husband bought a flap bag from Chanel Paris for me which was just before the price increase. Unfortunately i found defect on the bag and request for repair or exchange the bag in my home country and guess what, there is no repair service for Chanel and Chanel was asking me to topup the different of the price increase and exchange rate different if i would request for exchange the same bag. I feel it is irresponsible, the reason for exchange is due to product issue and it should have been detect before the bag was pack. It was initially a surprise from my husband but end up become very bad experience with Chanel… Last year i was facing the same issue with LV, but LV willing to exchange 1 to 1 brand new bag after they confirm the defect issue.
I’m sorry to hear this happened. Especially when being surprised with a gift from a loved on, it’s a shame that you had to discover a defect and go through nonsense. 😔 This is exactly why many Chanel customers are upset. It’s not merely about the price increases. It’s the disconnect between the prices and the quality and service.
Both please. Hermes is hard to buy in store! And I ONlY buy my bags in store!! It’s about the experience and will NEVER buy second hand bags! So I prefer Chanel atm! :)

And as for Chanel, I hear horror stories about their quality not being nearly as good as it used to be, and no after-purchase care available. At these prices it's really unacceptable to me. I do love their flap bags in lambskin, but if I ever buy one it's going to be a vintage - with actual gold plated hardware and flawless stitching.

I gravitate towards Chanel always! Yes Hermes is fantastic too and is on my list NOW, AFTER I have 2 CHANEL classic flap bags.

It’s so funny because I’ve heard both bags be described as “matronly” and I can understand both ways! I think it’s all about styling at the end of the day. I remember wearing this long dress with my Chanel beige Clair Classic flap and looking the mirror and going “why do I look so old?!” 🙈 And then there was another time I grabbed my Birkin with a dainty little outfit, and I looked like I had borrowed my mom’s bag and was playing dress up! 😂 But most of the time, they work for me. 😉 Thanks for sharing your POV!
My choice would be Chanel. I would never carry a Hermes to a formal event. I have 15 Chanel bags and one Hermes. Chanel, you can wear anything!
Personally I have no interest in Hermes bags. For one, I find it amazing that the brand has shown absolutely no design evolution over decades. There are three designs it keeps churning out year after year. So yes, the quality might be great but isn't design always the first to attract one's attention? Only after you see a great design is when you consider purchasing it and look into it's quality. Chanel on the other hand has sustained the classic designs for decades but constantly work on new designs season after season. You can always purchase a beautiful seasonal bag that will never be repeated again and so becomes a unique one that you won't see everyone carrying. I love that about Chanel!
As for the experience, I don't want to play an entire game before a brand will decide whether I can or cannot purchase something I want!!
I just want to correct this misinformation. Hermes has new designs every year and you can see the new bags they just showcased on the runway recently. A lot of the more fashion forward customers have the new bags from Hermes, but what you tend to see on social media are the same old ones, I suppose because they are the most popular. Perhaps I can do a video on this season’s new Hermes bags if there’s enough interest.

(Garden Party and Picotin don't reflect any design evolution anyways!!)
In contrast, we can all name 10-15 bag designs of every other luxury brand that have been popular in the past decade.....Chanel, Dior, Gucci, Fendi, Prada, YSL etc. You may not agree but thats ok :)

Hermes. If I am paying those prices, it better be handmade. Each stitch is made by an artisan trained for so many years. I love the stories behind each scarf design. Chanel bags are mostly machine made and have become quite ubiquitous and commonplace. I think that's the reason they are raising prices significantly to have the exclusivity of Hermes.
Oh gosh, don’t get me started on the Hermes scarves! I’m obsessed! 😍 When I’m bored, I read all the history and descriptions of each scarf design online. 😂

Great video. Funny thing is I have had quality issues with Hermes..one of my sneakers had to be returned as the ink leaked all over the shoe. One of my handbags is already looking so worn out when I’ve been using it reasonably gently. As far as my flaps are concerned I have had no issues. I think the two bags styles are so different it would be difficult to choose but style wise I would go for the Chanel classic flap. The Birkin and Kelly seem more casual and very artisanal. Hermes also makes it so difficult to get a bag that it is so much easier to get a Chanel flap. Both are not worth their priçe ..luxury rarely is.

I hear more and more that Chanel is reserving certain items for only their VIP clients and that many SAs are now pushing RTW and jewelry before making a bag available to newer customers. Do you think this is true?
@@hellocatwalkcity I’m not sure because I stopped buying Chanel last year since I have a good collection but I was able to get the bags I wanted even tho it took some time asking different SAs I knew. I tried the Hermes game and although I bought the things I want, in the end I don’t have the patience without knowing the end goal in sight. I generally don’t like fine jewelry or ready to wear as well and I refuse to buy just to get a bag so it’s a losing game for me.
Most of my favorite iG influencers from LA are rockin Hermes 😂 I’m not sure what the hype is or the history behind it but I will definitely research.

I’m the same as you. It would be Hermès for the same exact reasons. Actually I am not planning to buy more from Chanel, like you, I have enough bags and I’m not interested in their rtw at all. Maybe some fj but still I prefer Hermès in that category. I have a good time shopping at Hermès, I really love their bags and own a few. Plus, my husband loves Hermès too, it’s a win win. I’m at a point where I’m totally at the end of my handbags collection and I don’t even mind waiting for the last bag I want. Bag or no bag, I will continue to shop at Hermès.

I 100% thought you would say Chanel based on your bags, and I am so satisfied to hear you say Hermes for all of the same reasons that I would choose Hermes if I could only choose one. I splurged big time on a cashmere sweater, it is low key without any big logo but gorgeous and thick and timeless. I don’t own any of their bags yet but have a few scarves, small jewelry pieces, one pair of booties that won’t wear out and a sweater. It is the experience and quality. chanel started to be like burberry.. they had such a good classic item and used to be a reputable brand. but nowadays they tryna be in the mass market. if I pay $10k for a bag, I better get a good damn quality bag and good customer service
So interesting you say this because if you’ve noticed, Burberry is now trying to reinvent itself. The CEO of Burberry recently stated they want to be known for more than their classic trench coats. Hiring Daniel Lee was a big move for them.
One straightforwardly increases prices ignoring clientele concerns towards quality. The other makes two beautiful bags (B and K) that are mostly unavailable but draws people towards the brand in the hope of getting “offered “one and the offer may not be necessarily what the client desires. Basically, sell everything else to the client but for the B or K or C. Am Keeping aside especial journeys.
One has been doing it wrong caught in the web of exclusivity, the other has attained the exclusivity but cloaked in mystery.
For now, I evidently know the brand to move away from bidding 👋 Consistent lack of quality is disrespecting the clientele.

Chanel after sales seems pretty bad. I’m having an issue with a ysl bag from my heavy use of it and the SAs at the Bloomingdales boutique we’re very helpful in seeing if they can get it repaired. Chanel seems reluctant to do that from the stories that I’ve heard.
It’ll be interesting now that the prices are pretty much level between the two brands. Hermes may actually benefit in the long run with Chanel’s price increases. 🤔 We’ll see. As for your YSL bag, I do hope they’re able to take care of it for you!

Heya! Do u know how's the aftercare of other luxury brands compared to Hermes n Chanel? Like for example LV, Celine, Fendi etc? Do they take more after the Chanel approach to aftercare?
For me it's hermes.i have bags and shoes from both brands.but the chanel price hike is ridiculous. However the games that hermes plays is also so annoying. That said I do enjoy the bags I have and given the opportunity will buy again.

Kind of unrelated but as someone who has only purchased 2 things from Hermes, if I am interested in the Evelyn 16, how should I go about asking in store?
You just need to ask the sales associate if there are any mini Evelynes available. I had only purchased two items as well before asking. I had no purchase history in the US (only in Paris) but I walked into my local store and asked. They had a few available but not in the color I wanted so I told them I’d wait. They took down my info and eventually called me a couple weeks later to come pick up mine in the gold color. Bingo! 👌 Good luck!
From someone, like me, who knows really nothing about handbags, but just luxury brand names and the aesthetic value...I would go all the way with the Hermes because it looks far more appealing as to the shape and design. Looking at the two, the Chanel looks like a pair of gym socks while the Hermes a nice wool sweater 🤣

My one and only shopping experience at Hermes was ok. Much prefer Chanel shopping experience. The sales associates are more into showing me different items and styles in Chanel. I went into H told them what I was looking for brought them from the back. They did not offer other colors, styles etc. I bought a watch and belt. They did not seem too excited about their role. All other houses are super helpful and excited to show you new items-not H. Kind of a yawn
Oh well, then I can understand your sentiment. If the sales associate isn’t working to make your shopping experience a pleasant one, then it’s just meh. I get it. I have to say, every time I’ve shopped at Hermes (across 4 different cities with different SAs) I’ve always encountered such friendly and eager service. My local Hermes SA is always showing me what’s new and sharing the history behind each item. I quite like it because I learn something new each time. I also receive this type of service with my now Chanel SA. Not all prior we’re so good. I suppose it’s hit or miss depending on the individual SA. I wish it were more consistent across the board.
Not all Hermès bags are desirable. Only Birkin, Kelly and Constance that are sought after. I would not choose Picontin, Garden or Bolide over Chanel classic flap.

When I think of all I could buy with that money I say neither.
I own both brands, but I love top-handle bags, so I was never interested in the Chanel classic flap, just like I was never interested in the Hermes Constance.
I already own a coco handle, a trendy cc, and a Dauville tote from Chanel, all in my favorite color pink, so I think I already have all I want from Chanel.
Now that the prices aren't that different, I would rather spend my money on another Hermes Birkin or Kelly, considering the higher quality in both leather and craftsmanship.

From an aesthetic standpoint, I'd choose Hermes Kelly. It's beautiful without looking overly feminine. The quilted design of Chanel doesn't appeal to me.

Recently my husband bought a flap bag from Chanel Paris for me which was just before the price increase. Unfortunately i found defect on the bag and request for repair or exchange the bag in my home country and guess what, there is no repair service for Chanel and Chanel was asking me to topup the different of the price increase and exchange rate different if i would request for exchange the same bag. I feel it is irresponsible, the reason for exchange is due to product issue and it should have been detect before the bag was pack. It was initially a surprise from my husband but end up become very bad experience with Chanel…
Last year i was facing the same issue with LV, but LV willing to exchange 1 to 1 brand new bag after they confirm the defect issue.

Especially when being surprised with a gift from a loved on, it’s a shame that you had to discover a defect and go through nonsense. 😔 This is exactly why many Chanel customers are upset.
