    After I quit wearing toenail polish during the pandemic I discovered that the nail damage (super, super deep ridges & yellowing) I had attributed to being a senior citizen was 100% due to wearing polish. And YES, I wore a CND base underneath the polish and I also changed the polish every 3 weeks using a soy based remover. I haven’t worn polish since and my nails look young & healthy again.

      i have been wearing nail polish on my toenails for several years, like non stop, so when i noticed my nail had stopped growing i got worried and decided to stop using toenail polish, i'm just 18 and i had deeeep ridges and yellowing, the color had become stuck underneath the ridges,
      it's only been a few weeks and my nails are already growing better, it's wild how damaging nail polish can be

    I stop wearing nail polish in my toes during the cold months and my toenails look beautiful and healthy because they are allowed to “rest” and breath. I’ve done that my whole adult life, I’m 54 now. I get thousands of compliments on my feet, I take very good care of them all year around and they look youthful and healthy. And I only wear regular polish on my nails and toes, never gel or similar.

    Bottom line … nails look better when you don’t wear polish all the time. When I stopped wearing it all the time and doing my own manicures with all your instructions, my nails have transformed 100%. Now I enjoy not wearing polish all the time because my natural nails and living skin look so good. Thank you!! ❤️

    I am going to forward the link to this video to all women in my life. THANK YOU so much for doing the research and educating us in nail care.

    And now, just a short note regarding my own experience with nail polish. I do my own pedicure and I wear nail polish on my toenails probably 80% of the time. I do my pedicures and change of polish on average every 4-5 weeks, but I do give my toenails a day or so of a breather between removing the old polish and applying the new. I've been doing this for decades and have not seen any damage on my toenails. My fingernails are a different story. Even though I like the look of nail polish on my fingernails ( I like more 'natural' look rather than 'glamy' ), I don't wear it on my fingernails as much as on my toes. I wash my hands often, and do all house chores without gloves so nail polish simply doesn't last long, therefore, I tend to have it on for 4-5 days, take it off and maybe not polish again for a few days or weeks. However, I'm a 'picker' and I tend to 'fuss' over my nails much more if they are not polished than when they are. So, I would say polish protects my nails, mostly from myself 😆. I am lucky that my nails are not overly sensitive to polish, so I have a choice to wear it or not.

    I started getting these white spots on my toenails when I hit my mid-40s. I found that changing my polish once a week helped. The longer the polish stays on, the deeper the spots seem to get. Last summer, I started using the Nail Tek Pedicure system for dry/brittle nails and I really did see much less damage. By the time sock weather rolled around, my toenails didn't look horrible when they had nothing on them. Just a data point with my experience.

      You are very welcome! I hope it doesn't come across like the polish is the devil but it just has to be used in moderation by some people especially.
      Often people see surface damage and they buy nail polish "treatments" which are nothing but regular clear nail polish with some microscopic amounts of ingredients that sound good but in many cases don't do anything beneficial really (like topical biotin)... and they use them more and more in hopes of improving the nails. Meanwhile the nails need less polish. NOT more.

    I had the worst nails because of nail salons grinding and filing on nail beds. I stopped wearing polish and my nails were peeling, breaking, and in terrible condition. I started using jojoba oil often through out the day and before placing hands in water. It takes a little time but my nails are now amazing! They no longer peel, flake and I file them to a medium length so they are no long breaking. Jojoba oil forms a better coating and seals the nail.

    I am 56 and have an autoimmune disease. Some fingernails are ridged, and one has a fold which splits at the bottom. I LOVE nail polish but struggle to wear it without drying and flaking nails. I have been following your advice to take good care of my nails and in spite of the above they look healthy. I need to oil more often though. I bought a mini kit from Dazzle Dry. First, it's the only polish that stays on for an entire week without chipping. It does wear off on the tips but I type all day and I'm not really skilled at wrapping the edge with the polish. I always remove polish after a week. After the first week, my nails looked great! I spent a few days using the Mavala treatment and oiling my nails before using Dazzle Dry again. This time after a week I see flaking on several of my nail tips. It's discouraging, but they still look better than with any other polish. I think I will try oiling when the polish is on, and giving my nails an entire week without polish in between manicures.

    This explains so much: I find that nail polish is super protective for my nails. But I have much too dry skin/nails, weaker nails, and I change polish every week or week and a half because I love changing it up. (Edit: I do regularly oil, but I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and i seem to lose proteins from my hair, nails, and skin far too easily on top of producing too little skin oil)

    Hi Anna, thank you for a really informative video. I want to tell you, that I removed the nail polish from my toes in August. Since then I have not had nail polish at all on my toes. I started to oil my toenails and around them, every evening after wash, before bedtime. Exactly like you have learned me to oil my fingernails many times a day! And now, you would say, that my toenails look much healthier. Last year, last winter (live in Sweden) I had nail polish all time, because I wanted to hide the toenails. Now after oiling them these months they have got more flexibel, they ar not so hard to cut and they are not damaged more, like on your picture! Now I will always oil my tonails and then don't need nail polish in winter.

  • @katgirlblue

    Wow! The picture you showed on the right, of her nail while letting the polish grow out, is EXACTLY the same as my nails look after using Kur by Londontown "Nail Probiotic Instant Boost." It sounds like a great nail treatment, but after using it my nails looks just like the picture on the right!! I tried just going back to using the nail concealers, but that made it even worse, so I tossed everything and am letting that horrible surface grow out. I thought it was dry, but now I understand that it's surface damage. I happened to have Ella & Mila First Aid Nail Kiss at home, so I decided to try it, and it seems to be ok, just to cover that awful surface while it grows out, because it's very rough and also looks horrible.

    I have traditionally worn polish on my toes w/o changing it for (at times) 1 or 2+ months at a time then I would remove the polish and go without anything for 1 to 5 days; I never experienced the damage you discussed herein until a few years back when I switched from using Wet 'n Wild to something that the supermarket carried. Then I started noticing the damage and white marks -- heretofore I had always thought the spots were a type of bruising -- and the yellowing. [*Note - my feet are very dry and I stand on them 10 to 12 hrs a day so I massage a combination of coconut oil and lanolin into them every day at least once and once or twice a week I rub oil (Jojoba or Baobab) into my cuticles.] I did a little research and switched to Zoya products; problems cleared-up. I also like ILNP products-- they wear better/last longer than the Zoya.

    This makes a lot of sense, thank you! I got back into nail polish this year and have worn it more regularly than I ever did before. My nails were very healthy when I started and are constantly peeling now, even though I think I’m trying to combat it by wearing gloves when cleaning and using cuticle oil. I’m a little sad because I got so many beautiful new colours this year that I don’t want to leave to dry up, but I’ll be more mindful about giving my nails a break.

      Yes, I would wait until the damage grows out (without polish). Use some treatments possibly and warm jojoba soaks. When the nails are healthy then you can go back to polishing and giving your nails breaks (like 5 days polished and 2 no polish, or 6 days polish and 1 day no polish)

    I usually take a break from wearing any polish on my toes over the winter months and I am very good about using Kerasal and other things you've recommended on your channel. The nails on my right side always look so much worse than my "non-dominant" side. I attribute it to all of the fast-paced walking I do every day, I work in NYC and that's just life. But I have also only recently begun using Vinylux and that formula seems to make all of my nails a yellow color. I also have one toenail that seems like it has chronic damage. I hope it grows out soon!

    @lenawahlberg6109 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You wanted to know, how we find nailpolish protective of the nail. We all are different, therefore you will get a number of different answers.
    My story: my nails have ridges growing lengthwise from the cuticle and up. It started in my teens and is getting worse. The nails has always been brittle, but I have used normal nailpolish (base- colour- and topcoat) most of the time. When my nails are short, it is hard for me to grow them longer, they break easily. My normal nail polish never stays on for more than 5 days, then it starts to peel away by itself, but it helps me to protect my nails from splitting these 5 days. I have never had a cuticle problem in my life. A month ago, I bought a acrylic starting kit from Amazon and as you are saying, it is hard to get it off the nails and the surface gets affected. I after that bought a gel polish starter kit to get a nail polish which doesn't peel. I have also started to let my nails rest from products for at least two days after removal, and during these days let them get as much moisturizer as they can manage. My nails really like that. They don't split and they look better than ever, but I still know I need to put gel polish on after a couple of days. They will break if I don't. And If they break and becomes short, it is hard for me to make them grow longer. So with this said, it is two sides to the coin. I experience, just as you say, that the nail get a bit damaged by these products. But on the other hand, the products seems to protect the nails from splitting while it is on.
    For nail and cuticle treatment: I use my face cream and caster oil and seal it with vaselin. Keep it on during the night. I also now and then during daytime massage the cuticles with oil. Not always but now and then.
    So this is my nail story, and I find it much similar to what you are describing. If my nails wouldn't peel, I would not need the gel polish, and the nail products gives a little bit of damage. But I have to found a middle way I think and so far my middle way is two days without nail products but much of moisturizer, oil and vaselin for two days before puttning on a new product.

    Thank you for taking the time to do such an in depth video. It was great! As a consumer, I don’t think that any nail professional should say that the nails are protected. You should just say what it does. As in, the nail polish will allow your nails to get longer as they may get harder. But it may turn your nails yellow and have ridges. Everyone’s desired end result is different so being clear about it I think is best. I don’t have damaged nails but I will be giving my ties a break in the winter. And I have dazzle dry and will be trying it out.

    I got severe damage in my toenails and the main reason is exactly what you mentioned I left the nail polish for so long 😢 I moved from Canada to Australia and with the stress forgot for months about the nail polish (gel/red color) my nails were super yellow and thicker. Surprisingly it was only my big toenails! The rest of the toes were fine probably because they grew faster. My right big toe nail is growing healthy (super slowly) but the left one is barely growing. 😅 After a year there is very little improvement. Try not having the polish on for too long and take few days break and use jojoba oil after a shower and massage it into the nail and the surrounding skin.

      Once it happens the damage simply needs to grow out.

      Hello, what do you mean "healthy non-cuticles"?
      Wearing just the Dazzle Dry base and top and regular nail polish does not give you the same results as a full DD system.
      Nitrocellulose in the color coat can still break down, liberating nitric acid. Nitric acid has a small molecule which can penetrate through the base coat still yellowing the nail.

    Hi Anna - it’s Michelle from our emails - you know my struggle and I’m seeing my doctor tomorrow and I’ll follow up with an email letting you know the outcome.
    There is another side to this issue that I’ve uncovered. I feel horribly unkempt and ugly without nail polish. I’ve always hated the look of bare nails - I think it looks untidy and uncared for and I don’t even want to wear my wedding rings because I don’t want to draw attention to my hands.
    If I get through whatever this is I’ll spring for DD even having to pay the outrageous $50 shipping because it’s better than feeling like this. I’m someone who wore nail extensions until I no longer could, then gel nails then regular polish every single day for 40 years without missing one day.
    Right now my nails aren’t just bare they are hideous due to this nail separation thing and I’m just hoping I can get back to wearing polish and feeling like myself again. 😢

      Hi Michelle! It could be an allergic reaction so depending what you are allergic to, Dazzle Dry might not be an option either. Make sure before you spend money on another product (and the shipping!).
      PS. We can't blame DD for the shipping. Shipping nail polish correctly by air (and labelling it as flammable as it should be) is very expensive.
      Shipping to EU is over $100 USD.

    I liked nail polish but I hated the yellowing. I also had mega peeling issues, and needed to take breaks.
    Even a professional couldn’t save my polishes from chipping and yellowing. So I practically gave up on manicures.
    I found Anna in the early 20s. I discovered Dazzle Dry through her videos, and tried it out. No more yellowed nails. SOLD!
    However, my peeling continues. So I regularly take breaks between polishes. (My toenails don’t peel, they don’t get breaks.)
    For me, I believe my manicures are damaged by regular water dunks and insistence on using these fairly thin nails as a tool substitute. My poorly treated nails are in much better shape thanks to following (some of) Anna’a recommendations. 👍😜

    Never had an issue with nail polish causing issues except when I use dip to help grow out a break. There's yellowing, not a lot though, but that's because of super pigmented polishes. No white spots or surface damage. Ive had manicures last few over two weeks no chips. Thst giant white spot looks like she kicked something tbh.

I do the gentle manicures and stopped buffing out my ridges per your videos. It's odd but it was going well and then now that it's winter time, the damage is back. I have better luck with my Dazzle Dry manicures if I follow Anna’s advice of: leave polish on for less than a week, rest the nails at least 24 hours between polishes, and lots of oil (both polished and unpolished).
      When I leave my polish on for 7+ days (regardless of manufacturer) and constantly repolish, I have far more peeling and breakage issues.

    What do you think of polishes like Zoya? I like it, and mostly use it. I like to let my nails "breathe" once in a while and sometimes go a week, or weeks without polish, and I just oil and moisturize my nails in the interim. Then I might keep them polished for a couple of weeks, then take 3-4 days off, polish again, and like that. I always wear a base coat. Is Dazzle Dry expensive, and where can it be purchased?

    • @TheSalonLife

      Zoya is nice but it't not really different from any other nail polish. Still contains nitrocellulose.
      It usually has a beautiful formula and colors.
      Nails don't breathe but they do benefit from a break from any coating once in a while.

  • @leahchase3699
    @leahchase3699 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    When people say polish protects, I think they mean different things: usually protection from nail breakage and from excessive water uptake.
    But 100% it can cause damage, which is a different matter and in that sense not protective, and I agree there. Though this varies based on nail quality, nail care, and polish used.
    Excellent video as always!

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Polish actually raises moisture level in the nails and does not protect from water. Polish and gel polish will peel off more when the nails are exposed to a lot of water because the water enters, swells the nail and the polish peels.

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I actually don't know why but observing my clients I come to conclusions. In this case I think:
      1) Because Dazzle Dry is generally more gentle (nitrocellulose free)
      2) maybe because it's a thinner coating than even base-colour-color-top
      No idea really why but my gut tells me it has to do with these 2 things.
      Is it ok to use only basecoat?
      Depends on the base coat. Some stay sticky and rubbery and they get stained. Top coat dries smooth.
      Some base coats you can.
      Dazzle Dry base coat has to be covered with something. It will peel off by itself and it dries matte and looks like there is nothing on the nails.

    I wish more salons did better no-polish manicures. It feels not quite worth it for full-price when it's such a cursory cuticle clean up and some buffing (that scratches up the surface more than anything). I want someone to really make those cuticles and the shape perfect without a polish or a buff!

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The shape and the condition of the skin around the nails (that is not cuticle) is something that has to be done by the client by caring for the skin daily. That cannot be achieved by doing a manicure.
      I think the whole manicure part is confused by many (both clients and service providers). Clients think that we can fix weeks or months of neglect by doing a manicure.
      Nails and skin around the nails need to be cared for and maintained by the clients. We can do the decoration part. Shaping the nails, putting finishing touches and polishing the nails. We can’t “fix” nails or skin by doing a manicure

    If I'm wearing polish regularly, then I can't go a day without it or my nails will break. The polish supports longer nails but once it's removed my nails are extra weak. If I'm not wearing polish then they look good and won't break immediately but won't stay very long. I agree with you completely. "Protection" is not really protection if you're worse off than before or you're only protected while you're wearing it.

      Both are correct. Pros and cons of polish. Polish especially worn for extended period of time at a time and when no oils are used (oil contains antioxiantioxidants) can for some people cause significant surface damage.
      On the other hand, 1 coat of clear coat, worn for 6 days, treatments and oils used- might cause less. It’s not so black and white

    • @TheSalonLife

      International shipping of nail polish is very expensive (that is the price that FedEX or UPS charge, not Dazzle Dry). Polish (if you wanna ship it legit) is flammable and it has to be shipped as "dangerous goods". They are a small company and there is only so much they can do.

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, it's not like DD is making that 50 USD to ship it.
      Shipping nail polish is a pain, most of the couriers don't wanna ship it. It has to be shipped properly because it's a flammable item so it has to be shipped as "dangerous goods" and it's expensive because these items have to be shipped in special flame resistant compartments.
      I wouldn't call it criminal. It sucks but that's life. Still cheaper than driving there and buying it in person.

      I get that but soooo many places ship for free and I'm sure they aren't skirting the rules - Sephora, Shoppers Drug Mart, Nail Polish Canada, Amazon (OK I know Amazon is a special case), Sally Beauty. . . I think it just depends on if the company values the international business or not. There are lots of indy brands out of the states that I order from (ILNP, Mooncat, etc) that charge like $20 for shipping, so I'm sure they are splitting the cost with the customer.

      All of these places do not ship nail polish internationally for free.
      And you can't compare DD which is a small company to Shoppers Drug Mart or Sephora.
      I just looked into how for example ILNP would ship to Spain and they ship
      First Class Mail® International$29.05
      Priority Mail International® $62.95
      On 80$ item.
      When you look into the rules of USPS shipping they clearly state that they don't allow to ship dangerous goods.
      www.usps.com/ship/shipping-restrictions.htm
      "If the nail polish you want to mail is flammable, you are responsible for knowing its flashpoint and toxicity. Flammable nail polishes may be mailed domestically if they are a consumer commodity. Some nail polishes may only be sent by ground transportation."
      But the companies ship it anyway I guess....
      I checked how much is to ship ILNP to Canada:
      Priority Mail International®
      $46.50
      First Class Mail® International
      $24.40
      Also USPS.
      Just curious, does it say on the label that they ship nail polish?
