A refugee camp that once hosted more than 14-thousand supporters of Cambodia's dreaded Khmer Rouge was closed on Tuesday when the final 1-thousand and 36 occupants boarded trucks and returned to their homeland.
The refugees, mostly family members of Khmer Rouge guerrillas, had been in Thailand since a Cambodian government offensive a year ago that captured their last major stronghold at Anlong Veng.
Arranged by the U-N High Commissioner of Refugees, the last 1-thousand and 36 refugees left the camp early on Tuesday.
They were heading for Poipet, a western border town in Cambodia, and Anlong Veng, the last stronghold of the Khmer Rouge.
The refugees were given food and water and took clothes and some domestic animals with them.
Their journey is expected to take several days, passing through processing centres in Cambodia and onward to distant provinces.
The commander of the Thai army task force that oversaw the repatriation was happy to officially close down the camp.
Major General Wiwat Sattarak said he was optimistic there wouldn't be any more fighting.
    SOUNDBITE (Thai)
"The remaining Khmer Rouge are very few. They could not make any impact on Cambodians. A few people cannot create problems. This is the end of the Khmer Rouge problem."

The refugees had been in Thailand since a Cambodian government offensive a year ago that captured their last major stronghold at Anlong Veng.
The fall of Anlong Veng sent the fighters on the run along the border under the command of their one-legged general, Ta Mok.
Ta Mok is now considered defeated, following the defections late last year of nearly all his troops and two other senior Khmer Rouge leaders, Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea.
Thai officials said that about 700 of the final 1-thousand and 36 refugees were heading through the Aranyapratet border checkpoint in Thailand.
Family members including those who had lost limbs to landmines and several young men would return to the Anlong Veng area, now controlled by the government.
    However some are wary.
    SOUNDBITE (Khmer)
"I want to go back to my homeland but not in Anlong Veng. I'm afraid of more fighting there."
    SUPER CAPTION: Kar, Refugee
Kar was returning to Rattanakiri province in eastern Cambodia with his wife and daughter.
Some 380 were planning to go back to provinces they hadn't seen in perhaps 20 years.
At that time, the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime was toppled in an invasion by Vietnam and the radical communists took to the jungles to fight a guerrilla war.
The Thais say the repatriation of another 14-thousand 500 Cambodians, mostly Khmer Rouge family members, will begin from another camp, Khao Phlu, on February 12th.

Once you feed a dog. It will remember you as his master until the last day of his life.
But even more than 10 years you feed Khmer dogs, all of them will forget everything very soon and try to bite you, hurt you and betray you.
