How in the world did Jaleel White NOT win an Emmy throughout his career? He's one actor that doesn't get enough credit for his work as Steve Urkel. Not many can be someone who was supposed to be on one episode into someone who turned into a regular and WAS the show throughout until the end!
@@simplyredislandgirl crazy stuff... how did they decide to make him part of the all cast? Cause one episode is clearly not enough to take such a decision. Is it?
Jaleel White said himself "it was one episode & done!" & the studio audience responded so well to him just playing the small role as "Laura's nerdy date" so well that the producers & writers decided to call him back shortly after, to do a few more episodes for a trial period, again the audience & the viewers responded extremely well to his character & the ratings for the show went back up & of course that impressed the producers so they officially wrote him into the show's storyline & made him officially a part of the cast later on & then he basically became the biggest star on the show because of his character's (Steve Urkel) popularity & his great acting abilties at such a young age. He was never supposed to be a part of the show in the 1st place. HE said so in plenty of the interviews he did, freely available all over youtube and all over the internet! Please go and watch His explanation on how he eventually became officially a part of the cast & then you will understand that there was nothing "Crazy" about what I said and about what many others who watched Jaleel White's interviews have been saying. @Brittany Bennett I'm nerdy and extremely intelligent and inventive like Steve was but I'm also likely twice or thrice his age at 39 and thus have the life experience and wisdom. If I saw that one woman only wanted me if I changed the very nature of who I was and saw another woman who wanted me for who I was as I was, I'd be smart enough to go with the latter.
@Brittany Bennett at the same time, her dad would be dead at least twice over if not for Steve being there and knowing CPR and knowing martial arts via the Bruce juice he calls it. I'd say that offsets the bad and balances everything out.
You have to read between the lines. Long before Stefan, in the Marriage 101 episode, Urkel made her cry. To be precise, they made each other cry. Look at this scene. All he really did was remove his glasses and change his voice-and she liked him! Let's be real. She had to have liked him in the first place.
Of course it was pretend. The test is whether the actors can make you believe what you're watching. These two made me believe. The connection is so strong that I not only think Steve and Laura were meant for each other-I also believe Jaleel and Kellie S. were meant for each other!! You can feel the chemistry.
@@gregorycanfield2797 Yes, in a weird way, Steve had always been right about Laura loving him but refusing to admit it even to herself. Laura even got jealous TWICE when Steve focused on another girl - in the second season, she even admitted to being jealous when Steve had his one-time girlfriend Suzie (whom he gave away to the chess club captain, who hopefully appreciated her more than Steve did) - the second time was at the end of season four, when Steve ignored the Winslows for two whole weeks when he first tried really hard to commit himself to Myra. Still, Laura's hidden feelings shouldn't have been good enough for Steve, especially when he had someone who was very openly in love with him - Steve REALLY settled when picking his dream woman.

I didn't understand the reality of the world at 9 or 10 years old but watching this show was such a pleasure. Laura is always so beautiful😍. I wish I continued to believe growing up that the world was as happy and beautiful as it was in this series. Forever my favorite childhood series. Thank you very much for creating it. 🥲🥲🙇🏽♂❤❤❤
Laura was such a jerk. She treated Steve like crap and had no regard for his feelings, but when Steve turned into Stefan, she fawned over him. Steve had to make groundbreaking advances in science and alter his genes to become the man that a woman like Laura would want. Reminds me of what guys do in real life when they try to change who they are just to attract women. The idea of Stefan is sad actually.
Kenny Bucketz yes that's what the producers wanted to show. But she ended up wanting to marry the real Steve Urkel in one of their episodes. She realized his true feelings for her through Stefan.
He did this role too damn well, when I was younger I thought this was 2 different people😂. He’s such an amazing actor, the transformation from Steve to Stefan was immaculate.
Jaleel White is so talented, it's ridiculous!! It doesn't even make sense!!! He deserves several Oscar's, and other awards for his phenomenal performances, episode, after episode! These producers were able to do so MUCH with his character, simply because he was so extremely talented and versatile!! I'm so fortunate, I got to grow up in the 90's!!
For real. It's really too bad Jaleel didn't get the credit he really deserved for his work in Family Matters. Looking at the reruns now as an adult, you realize his real impact on this show. I did when I watched this show when I was a kid in the 90's, but when you're an adult, things hit different as the kids say now. LOL. But yes, hopefully one day he will be recognized for his work on Family Matters..... No one else could pull off the Urkel character like he did. They tried it with Laura, Carl, and Eddie, and even though it was funny, it wasn't the same.
Jerome Holloman Shallow girl is Shallow. Later on in the series after becoming his best friend she eventually falls for him. She even had to choose between Stefan, who was a seperate being, and Steve.

Agreed the transition of him switching characters was pretty brilliant acting. The subtle way you can see both characters in expression alone for a brief moment while Stefan surfaces to the forefront was quite amazing.
herschie91 Ik im late, but i saw a reunion video. The actor actually told the writers that he thought this was boring. Jaleel said the writers said he needed to be seen that way
Would love to see Jaleel do a reaction video to the first time he ever played Stefan. It was brilliant and you can tell it caught the audience completely off guard. I’m going out on a limb and guessing that was live rather than a laugh track. Certainly felt like a genuine reaction.
Jaleel was so not on board playing as Stefan since he's been nerdy Steve for so long. He said he was very nervous leading up to it. But he did so well.
God I remember the excitement, my cousin and I would get Cool Ranch Doritos, which were still kind of new, and be all set to watch TGIF on Friday nights lol. I think you have to be a certain age group to understand 😂

I agree, Jaleel was an incredible actor, I never saw that episode. For him to remain in 'Steve' character for so long is awesome. His physical comedy is great and his ability to create and maintain a personality is so cool.
This was my favorite show growing up. I remember watching this on TGIF Friday nights and either my mom or my cousin's mom (my aunt) would make pizza. It was a Friday night thing. The 90s were fun.
Steve Urkel almost sold his soul to win her affection & that is sad. But that is how America is. It thrives off of the facades of opulence & extravagance that is brainwashed & conditioned into people by the media & other influences. Steve can't be himself because Laura is immature, unawoke & very much brainwashed
Not really. Laura had to do some growing up. Same with Steve, which is the reason why Myra and Stefan were created in the first place. They were meant to give the two an ideal significant other they can be with. In Urkel's case, Myra is the ideal girlfriend. He originally was attracted to her for being beautiful, intelligent and accepted him as he is. Steve could've left Laura for Myra, if she hadn't shown some negative qualities in her at the end of Buds 'N Buns. She was jealous, possessive, immature, overbearing, annoying and a commitment control freak. This puts Urkel off Myra permanently and scares him. During Season 5, he saw life as the Winslows in having his privacy invaded and being stalked relentlessly by her. Myra took it a step further by having sex with Steve inside his locker(the end of the post credits to Like A Virgin), spying on him by drawing him naked in his room(Nunsense), demanding commitment, and even trying to force him to marry her(Season 8's Revenge of the Nerd). In turn, he learned a hard lesson in respecting people's personal space and realized how annoying he is to everyone. Only when Urkel agreed to commit to dating Myra in the end of Season 6's Paradise Bluff, she calmed down considerably and he became less attached to the Winslows. This allows him to grow up into his own person. When Steve first transformed into Stefan in Dr. Urkel and Mr. Cool, Laura was immediately attracted to him. He was handsome, smooth and cool. Like Myra, Stefan showed some negative qualities that put Laura off him, even if it was temporary. He was arrogant, narcissistic and uncaring of others' well being. Laura saw this first hand when Stefan showed a lack of concern for Carl's partner who was shot near the heart and she was annoyed. She tells him off to return as Steve at once. Laura points out that unlike Stefan, he at least was caring for others. He complied to her wishes by eating the antidote in a tablet. When Stefan returned as Urkel, Laura was relieved to see him again and announces that she never wants to see his arrogant alter-ego again. Steve mentions that he can make improvements over Stefan's behavior. He does that in Stefan Returns by not only creating a transformation chamber from an unused port-a-potty, but also creating a liquid called Boss Sauce. This allows Stefan to remain cool and retain Urkel's caring nature. By the time Season 9 came around, Laura and Steve realized that they loved each other. This meant there was no need for Stefan and Myra.
@Beth’s Blog The problem with Myra was that she wasn't able to accept that Urkel was growing up into his own person during season 9. He was changing the way he dress from the hitched up pants and suspenders to wearing button shirts, slacks and shoes. Myra was changing herself physically, but her possessive and clingy personality remained.
@Outgoing entertaining man I don't think Myra only dated Steve because she felt sorry for him, but I do think Steve only dated Myra because he felt sorry for her.
@Outgoing entertaining man never watch much of the show but from everything I remember and from everything u said. Everything is on a superficial level.

These episodes broke my heart because how much truth is inside of them. Steve was willing to stop being himself, to destroy himself and be someone else so Laura would love him. I always wondered how many "Urkels" would watch the show wishing they could do such thing. Laura (the character of course) perfectly encapsulates modern women and how short sighted they are...until years, scars, kids, and pounds later when they are more than happy to take on these guys who may not be the tallest of most handsome but would do absolutely anything for them. I was never am "Urkel" but I was not the most popular kid either. Now a middle age guy with some success I have met some women who back in the day would not give the the time of the day. How in the world did Jaleel White NOT win an Emmy throughout his career? He's one actor that doesn't get enough credit for his work as Steve Urkel. Not many can be someone who was supposed to be on one episode into someone who turned into a regular and WAS the show throughout until the end!

@@Leprutz Yes, only one episode was the deal Jaleel had at 1st.
I never saw what Steve saw in Laura when Myra was prettier and loved him the way he was.
Except Myra was a stalker that would spy on him and draw pictures of him naked.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What one man frowns upon, another man salivates.

All he really did was remove his glasses and change his voice-and she liked him! Let's be real. She had to have liked him in the first place.
Gregory Canfield but it was pretending

Laura was such a jerk. She treated Steve like crap and had no regard for his feelings, but when Steve turned into Stefan, she fawned over him. Steve had to make groundbreaking advances in science and alter his genes to become the man that a woman like Laura would want. So sad that Laura couldn't love him for who he is and only when he turned into a totally different person.
You'd be surprised if you saw the later episodes.
She did in the end.
@Beth’s Blog
The problem with Myra was that she wasn't able to accept that Urkel was growing up into his own person during season 9. He was changing the way he dress from the hitched up pants and suspenders to wearing button shirts, slacks and shoes. Myra was changing herself physically, but her possessive and clingy personality remained.

Especially the voice. That kid must have worked overtime to get that annoying voice down. I figured that the "Stefan" voice was a lot close to Jaleel's natural voice.
Needless to say, if I wasn´t good enough then, I surely am not good enough now.
