    I personally often find Rogers texts to be quite hard to digest. This is really helpful and makes me grasp a better understanding.

    Wow! I'm writing an assignment and was getting a bit bogged down in thinking about my own self-concept and how it relates to my actualising tendency. I'm so grateful that towards the end of this video you unpack that relationship so clearly and carefully. Thank you!

    Thank you Chris for taking the time to highlight, break down and explain extremely clearly, the areas of counselling. I want to thank you for all the videos that you have done and posted. I am a student doing a level 4 diploma. There is quite a lot of context and information about person centred counselling and it has areas which take time to fully comprehend and achieve confidence in. I have saved your videos for future reference.
    More experienced counsellors could offer so much to future generations. You are a credit. Thank you 😊

      Andrea, thank you so SO much for your comment. It means so much to me and so glad that the videos are serving the purpose that I had hoped. I hope to have a lot more coming soon and anything I particular you would like covering, let me know! Best of luck with your studies and thank you once again for the time and thought in leaving your comment. Chris

    You explained this concept very well and though you say it is hard, I understood it very well. You made me enjoy Carl Roger's concept of person centered approach. The fact that he considered all life forms as having a desire to be better and always pursuing self actualisation is such a wonderful concept. It seems to me that he was a very understanding and caring man at heart. I must say that his clients must have been blessed to have him as a therapist. I would love to get a hold of his book, "A Way of Being" to read more and understand what he was all about and hopefully better understand how he conducted his therapy sessions! Thanks! :)

    • @ChrisTheCounsellor
      @ChrisTheCounsellor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it would have been great to have an experience of being his client and as you say, the actualising tendency is a great reminder of how we are all just doing the best we can in the only way we know how. I found ‘A way of being’ a great introduction to Rogers and I hope you manage to get a copy :)

    I really appreciate this video, as someone who has just started a person-centred specific counselling course I can find Carl's original works quite difficult to follow and piece together sometimes. Please could you maybe outline how the actualising tendency is different to 'self actualization' or the 'tendency towards self-actualisation'? Carl refers to it in 'A Theory of Therapy, Personality, and Interpersonal Relationships as Developed in the client-centred framework' chapter on pages 196-197 after writing about the actualizing tendancy. Maybe it will become clearer to me the more I read and learn. Your videos are amazing, thank you!!

    • @ChrisTheCounsellor
      @ChrisTheCounsellor  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for your comment and stopping by. In PC Theory "self-actualisation" actually refers to actualisation of the self-concept so is quite different to how it is usually used by people, in terms of reaching their full potential. I think I cover this in more detail on my self-concept video and also in an article on my website which you can find here - christhecounsellor.co.uk/self-actualization-the-true-meaning/ - I hope that helps with what you need but anything else that needs clarifying, please feel free to let me know!

    I'm finding it hard to understand if this would apply to anxiety and depression so common mental health issues. Would this be self actualisation also or are mental health issues not included ?

    • @ChrisTheCounsellor
      @ChrisTheCounsellor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s a good question. Mental health issues could be said as reactions or even ways of responding to the difficulties we face. Rogers, himself said that as the organismic valuing process and self concept move further apart, this causes psychological tension and anxiety, so that could some way to understanding it. CMHP could be seen as signs of this tension and our minds response to the internal struggle we are facing. I hope that helps. Really appreciate the comment and question

    Hi Chris....A very clear and well structured video. Thank you.
    What are your thoughts on Suicide and the actualising tendency? I am struggling to see how suicide fits in the PCT world. Thanks again.

    • @ChrisTheCounsellor
      @ChrisTheCounsellor  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Andy. Thanks for the comment, much appreciated.
      I think that’s a great question and one for lots of discussion. Obviously, as Counsellors we have an ethical and professional responsibility working with clients at risk of harm and the guidelines that are in place for working with that. However, in terms of the actualising tendency, it could be argued that suicide could be an expression of this if the person feels like this is their motivation and what they need to do to ultimate enhance their experience (or at least end suffering). It is a very complex and sensitive area and one that’s hard to capture in this comment but certainly worth lots of reflection and discussion. I hope that helps in some way!

    Hi Chris, I have found this video extremely helpful, thank you. I have just started level 3 and I have already become frustrated with how some of my peers still have the belief that they need to become the helpee's superhero, directing the helpee and instructing the helpee on how to overcome their issues.
    My question to you, is this subject covered in level 3? I believe that if the whole class can understand this and understand self-concept we might be able to move forward in our learning. I also understand that my question seems to go against the objectives of the "Actualising Tendency" but I'm feeling as if Level 3 is a bit of a barrier for me reaching Level 4.
    Thank you
    Duncan

    • @ChrisTheCounsellor
      @ChrisTheCounsellor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Duncan, firstly, apologies for my slight delay in getting back to you, its been a pretty hectic week!
      I'm really glad that you found the video useful and thank you for your comment and question. Whether the Actualising Tendency will be covered on your level 3 will very much depend on the syllabus that your centre uses and also your tutors. It sounds as though there is frustration in experiencing how others are responding in the Helper role. I think ideally, it would be great for you and other students to have space to explore what this might be about, as well as your feelings towards it. This can be really great learning for everyone involved, but again this will depend on the structure and delivery of your course.
      If you are not able to do this in class, then it could be a really helpful thing for you to explore for yourself and also help in progressing to the Level 4 also, but I can understand the frustration in experiencing this, especially if you feel it may be prohibiting your progression or learning. I hope that gives some help, even if not a fix as such! Happy to answer anything more in relation to this response. Thanks again for reaching out, Chris

    So how does the therapist help a client towards self-actualisation? 🤔 By helping to create the right conditions? If so, how would this be done with a drug dealer for example? Would they help them to find better sources to get their drugs? 💊💷And what happens to those of us who were the potatoes in the cellar? I can answer that one: They get thrown onto the compost heap. 🥔😔

    I remember an experiment that an Oriental man did with water. He spoke nasty to a container of water and with another words of love and optomism. When both were frozen, under a microscope the crystal of the negative container had distorted deformed crystals, but the other container that was spoken with love etc had beautiful well formed crystals. Goes without saying.
