  • During the Battle of Osowiec Fortress in 1915, German Field Marshal Paul Von Hindenburg ordered the bombardment of the fortress with an artillery barrage of chlorine gas to eradicate the 900 Russian defenders. After the bombardment 7,000 German soldiers advanced upon the fortress expecting little to no resistance when 100 disfigured Russians, coughing up blood and pieces of their own lungs, surprised the Germans with a countercharge. The zombie-like Russians opened fire and attacked the Germans with affixed bayonets causing mass panic and forced the Germans to flee back into their own traps inflicting more casualties. The remaining Russian defenders who survived the gas attacks seized the opportunity to raze the fortress and withdraw while the Germans hesitated. "The Attack of the Dead Men" spawned German legends about unkillable Russian soldiers rising from the dead to fight.

========= The Attack of the Dead Men LYRICS =========
    Turmoil at the front
    Wilhelm's forces on the hunt
There’s a thunder in the east
It’s an attack of the deceased
    They’ve been facing poison gas
    7000 charge en masse
Turn the tide of the attack
And force the enemy to turn back
And that’s when the dead men are marching again
    Osowiec then and again
Attack of the dead, hundred men
    Facing the lead once again
    Hundred men
    Charge again
    Die again
    Two combatants' spar
    Hindenburg against the Tsar
    Move in 12 battalions large
    Into a Russian countercharge
They’ll be fighting for their lives
    As their enemy revives
    Russians won’t surrender, no
    Striking fear into their foe

Morale of the story: don't fight against an enemy that know they are going to die and have nothing left to live for....

Joakim had a special microphone rigged in the mask. He is actually singing.

The fact that after you gas the hell out of your enemy position you believe its an easy victory only to find 100 or so men charging at you looking like a literal horde of zombies. Like I knew the Russians were crazy and scary but damn... that's gotta haunt you till the day you die.

This was the song I was looking forward to most when we were waiting for the Great War album to drop.. and was not disappointed. It's by far my favorite song from the album. I really love these deep dive videos you do, please continue with them.

Jan III Sobieski saved Vienna and the Empire of Leopold I Habsburg and did not reimburse the costs of the expedition as promised, and his granddaughter signed the partition of Poland with the Tsar of Russia and the Emperor of Germany

Something this song doesn’t depict about this story: the chlorine gas would bind to moisture, causing it to become hydrochloric acid. The men who breathed this in were decaying and melting from the inside out, chunks of flesh falling off their bodies, coughing up chunks of their own lungs. These men knew they were going to die, so, backed into a corner, they made a final push. The Germans thought everything would be dead, but they faced, what they thought, was an army of literal zombies. Out of fear, they retreated, and the Russians began picking them off one by one. The Germans were so panicked, infact, they fell victim to their own barbed wire. The Russians saved their bullets on the barbed wire-trapped Germans and instead used bayonets on them. This all because of one speech from one young soldier, who convinced them all that, if they’re going to die, they’re pulling as many Germans down with them as they can. That same young soldier, during the final push, had a bayonet pushed through his torso, so he looked at the guy who did it, and screamed like a banshee right into his face, spitting chunks and such right onto him. Of course the guy ran, got trapped in barbed wire, and was killed, as the young soldier kept pushing with a WHOLE BAYONET RAN THROUGH HIM

Does this historic fact make the Hindenburg (leader of German troops of that battle) guilty of the very first war crime of Germany. Gas used by Germany in WW2 also, poison gas grenades and other tear gas grenades used.

  • @Rizolyt

Thanks to the Russian soldiers, they played an important role in this chemical arms race. Read history, after that, they almost began to ban chemical weapons!!! If only nuclear weapons had been banned after Hiroshima and Nagasaki!!!!

Amazing and it makes us Russians look like a bunch of badasses. But horrible when the Germans started with these type of weapons.

Be sure to check out the Radio Tapok cover of this song. He translated the song into Russian, and Sabaton produced his video as if it was one of their music videos.

Not sure if anyone else have said this, but the reason the Germans fled from the Russians they tried to gas was that they expected everyone in Osowiec to be dead and were terrified when the Russians slowly moved into defensive positions whilst coughing up blood (which may or may not have contained pieces of their lungs. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). To be fair, if I were a soldier in the early 20th century and were moving towards an expected graveyard of dead corpses and seing the "corpses" move aroundready to charge me, I'd be pretty freakin scared.

This song is about ww1 where Soldier of the Russian empire held back multiple attack of the German empire for 7 months at the Osowiec Fortress, the Russian where ill equipped against the Germans when they released the very first batch of chlorine and bromine gasses into the Frontline, the Russians did not have gas mask since gas like this was becoming new to the front, so they used rags to cover up but it still didn't help, as the Germans was getting closer to the fortress the Russian would raise up and charge the German lines as they are coughing up blood and pieces of their lungs, seeing this most of the Germans would retreat calling them zombies or undead, this made it on a news paper as they labeled it attack of the dead men.

Half a year late, but for the Live video - yes, he had a microphone built into his gas mask. The dedication of Joakim.

Outnumbered 70 to 1. Insides dissolving from the chlorine in your lungs. Barely able to stand. What's the most Russian thing to do? CHARGE!

First time I found this band was when they dropped "Christmas Truce" and have been hooked on them ever since. I am not the biggest fan of metal music. But this band I just love and can't get enough of them. Their chose to bring history forward speaks to me. History that many have possibly forgotten or even knew about. I have even taken time to research some of the events and people they put to song. Something I have not done in a long time due to life getting in the way and have forgotten (myself) how much I love history. History (the good, the bad and the ugly) is important. For without it we never learn from our mistakes. May we all find peace and respect in our lives.
