I don’t go to the store very often. I check my ads first then if I need something to complete my ideas for meals, I pick it up and anything else I find at a good price. But eggs , onions , celery , carrots, potatoes & cheese Oh and milk I always make sure I have. I feed a family, still sometime only spend $10.00. I know I could easily feed myself with so much extra just like you. 😊 Just remember sometimes it’s OK to treat yourself, you deserve it.

After my daughter was born back in 1983 I didn’t have any food to speak of I was about 22 and inexperienced, I lived away from family and my then husband was worthless another couple I was friends with came to visit and I did say something about it and he told me about eating cooked corn meal with butter and sweetener of some sort I think I used pancake syrup I was very grateful but after eating that everyday I was over it . But it definitely gave me the strength to carry on . This was down south and I made friends and learned so much about cooking and survival food!! I eventually got back home around family and went to nursing school so Id never be hungry again!!

@@debbieframpton3857 anxiety over shopping/spending/not having enough is a real issue born of a lifetime of uncertainty. It's not something that you can just "get over", so your comment was unfeeling.
Learn to plan, budget and cook. This will empower you and help with anxiety.
I wasn't allowed to make ANY choices as a child/teenager. Massive amounts of control. As a new wife, I stood in the grocery store aisle and cried because I didn't know how to decide what I could or could not put in my cart.
Does that give you an idea of how this anxiety is born?.??

I really like your $20 approach. $25 may help build a little pantry too. I am a clearance, markdown bin, food sale shopper when possible. So that sometimes means buying multiples of things I commonly use. Over time this worked to build a really decent pantry. I also stop into stores I used to live near (even out of sate while visiting) when in the area and shop their clearance. For instance higher end seed/nut breads, cereals or overstock coffees are half price and even organic lettuce veg or fruit is pennies on the dollar. If there is a ton of fruit on clearance like berries I will can them into jam or pie filling. They store for years and are very quick to process. Our local gas station has great weekly deals so I also shop there when I pass by. Our little town doesn’t have the deals like bigger cities. I’m noticing even the “upper class” is not buying the specialty and organic foods like they did in our area so the markdown dairy products are plentiful at times and I freeze them. There are TONS of ways to save money. I could go months without shopping except for fresh produce or eggs. There is so much available in powder form like eggs (for baking). I know prices are spiking but if I treat the shopping like a game and challenge myself I have no anxiety. My grandmother was a foodie and I think I get my appreciation for food shopping from her. She shopped into her 90’s even. 🌸

I love hearing how people like you get creative. Ive scored BIG at food store dumpsters and am not at all ashamed to do so. Its amazing whats in them. I once scored 11 bags of gourmet coffee and 12 13 oz bags of gourmet potato chips that the store carefully wrapped separately and left at the top inside of the dumpster and later 7 heads of organic wrapped cauliflower after an organic farmers market!! None of this went to waste at my house! Shame on the stores for such waste when people are in need. In our area a local big box store donates their close date and best by dated foods to a local thrift store where they in turn sell the items (even meat and veggies) for pennies on the dollar. A win win for all.

Simple is good a lot times. I make my own mayo, but I was craving bologna last week and had hubby get two packs at $1.65 ea I believe he said they were? I like to put sliced tomato and onions on them sometimes or just eat with a piece of bologna, mayo, and bread. I also made a pot of pinto beans, and made some homemade hush puppies with stuff I had on hand, to go with the beans. I made the beans pretty plain, so I could run through the food processor, for either frijoles, bean dip, or bean and cheese burritos. I love cottage cheese too. You could add some of your left over carrots from last time, to that bag of slaw. Have you ever had just carrot slaw before with rasins in it? Pretty good. I like to have carrots, celery, and onions, for soups or other dishes too. I think you did awesome. I could make that work with what you had leftover.

@@simplefoodsimplelife9632 Here in MN where I live, Aldi is overall the cheapest. Of course, there are a few things that can be bought at other stores for cheaper. If you stock your pantry with those items when you are by those other stores, then you can do the majority of your shopping at Aldi and just pick up the loss leaders at the other stores.

Please be cautious after 4 days for leftovers. Its best to freeze any leftovers after 4 days. Foods that are cooked only have certain amount of time to use or freeze before they could be unsafe to eat if still refrigerated and not froze. Please check with your local county extension office for a food list pertaining to time frame foods should be eaten. The county extension office has free information that they will mail directly to your home address on nutritional information. And they also have some great meal planning information on a budget too. I enjoyed your video, and you had some great ideas on food budgeting. They also do some wonderful free classes they offer to community that are fun to attend and offer great information. Can find out through your local county extension office website. In many communities the Catholic Churches run through St. Vincent Depaul Society have great Food Banks for anyone interested in getting food through their Food Bank without any questions asked. That may also be another great option to help with your food budget too. May God bless you ahead. Peace be with you.

You could get a container of sour cream and a onion and make sour cream cucumber salad.if you have a green pepper you can use that in it to.with your first part of leftovers you could make a chicken pot pie in a pie plate size and have more extended meals.you could take a potato cooked cooked and the mayo and a tiny bit of mustard and vinegar and sugar and dried parsley, black pepper, onion chopped celery and make a potato salad for one.lm older like you and it's only me now for many ,many years.l also always cook like theres a crowd of people here so it gets hard but love been working at cooking for myself and leftovers for a few more times.

Thanks for the question. My spending is usually low except around holidays. I try to buy what I can use to make meals and stretch the food, however I noticed since prices have risen the same amount of money buys less. And I rarely shopped every week. I just had a budget and shopped when a good bargain came up.

Can you not do curbside pickup when you are buying more, if you have shopping anxiety? I wouldn’t have bought the hot dogs or the sausage re fat and salt. Never have bought shelf stable milk and am conflicted about all the milk varieties. Currently I drink 2% and love it. I use more cabbage lately also. Lasts so much better than lettuce and has a good crunch. Another TH-cam cook claims English cucumbers last better than other varieties but I have tried neither. Carole

It’s good to have vegan/vegetarian meals in our repertoire that’s for sure. Sometimes a whole cabbage is more economical it just depends on the season and how good they are for the price. Packaged is definitely easier. Thanks Regina!
