    Bruno was just so done with his gift it was almost funny. When he showed mirabel the prophecy, you can he how hopeful he was for a good outcome. Then they saw the two sisters hugging. He probably thinking, awww how sweet and the smile of his face afterwords was so adorable. Then Mirabel comes in and screams her sisters name in disgust. Looks over to him seething in anger and suddenly Bruno just up and tossed the green tablet, shaddering it while saying "everytime" in the saddest way possible. I feel so bad for Bruno.

      I am glad it was Mirabel that found Bruno again because she could relate and understand his burdens and sadness. They both were outcasts from the family and felt they were better off staying away in order to maintain the family’s happiness. They both felt useless.
      The difference is that Mirabel did not give up which inspired Bruno to come back.
      I also liked how Bruno saves Mirabel even though he originally dod not want to be found. That is family for you.

    It's a generally accepted theory that Mirabel is the next candleholder for the family. She'll take care of the miracle itself once Abuela is gone. That's why she didn't get a gift. Her and Abula's "gifts" are to hold the family together. That's why they're the best at communicating with Casita.

    • @Nerdnotwashere
      @Nerdnotwashere 2 ปีที่แล้ว +292

      In addition, Casita didn't reveal this fact so Mirabels own natural gifts would grow on their own without the heavy weight of expectation of being the next leader of the family deterring her.

      This was also being shown in first arts for the animation i think? Casita was meant to change its looks on the inside depending on how Abuela looked and how she was feeling. Later in the movie this was also suppose to happen when for Mirabell.

      They're the best communicating with the Casita and through the movie you also see Mirabel is also the best at communicating with the family members and getting their personal opinions on things that were previously kept inside. This helped to diffuse the tension in the family and also made everyone happier and stronger together.

    • @tornadey018

      I saw a comment like this on the TH-cam song and totally agree. Dolores (and also Isabela) say towards the end during Bruno's song "It's fine", both of which having complicated love interests happening and whatnot. Easily noticable on the lyrical background video.

    • @linasaurus3254
      @linasaurus3254 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      It's also possible that Bruno in the background was actually Camilo, which would probably make more sense given that Bruno doesn't want to be seen, and that Camilo's verse immediately follows Dolores'.
      Also, Bruno's eyes only glow green when he's performing a vision--but when Camilo imitates Bruno, his eyes are always glowing green, as they are in the background of the song. That could simply be a stylistic choice, though.

    I'm from colombia and I'm not sure that what ends up making abuela and pedro leave their home is a "revolution"
    In Colombia there is a concept of "forced displacement" by violence, no matter the origin of it, and the movie makes an effort to not give the one perpetrating the violence any voice or reason because that's how it is in real life for many people in rural places, you are told to leave or face the consequences, be it they want your land, your animals, you are teaching people how to think or have an opinion that opposes theirs.
    Its crude, inexplicable and heart breaking how 15-20 seconds of a movie showcase a problematic that has existed for many many years.

      I've seen it thrown around that the conflict they're running from in the beginning is the thousand days war. I also saw some official concept art for the film which included Pedro's year of death as 1901, which lines up with that conflict. I do agree with you though on that the perpetrators of violence aren't given a face or a voice because it isn't really important who they are or what they stood for, since their actions ruined the lives of so many

    Mirabel is to become the next Matriarch, she is in perfect symmetry with her grandmother: in space, her room is facing grandmother's, they are the only ones shown giving orders to the house, they are the only ones without specific powers and, while everyone else's clothes represent their powers, they both have the butterflies representing the miracle, they are the guardians of the house and the miracle (I think the candle is within grandmas' room, since the window is above her door, which will be at some point Mirabel's room, as it is the only room without a specific name on the door, but a title, is not Alma's room, is Abuela's room).

    • @martinottesen1053
      @martinottesen1053 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      Another thing backing the "candle inside Abuela's room" theory is that Mirabel had to climb along the roof to get to the candle. Why couldn't she just walk to it from inside the casita, if it was just standing in it's own room in the attic/top floor? The only reason that makes sense to me is that it was inside Abuela's room, and thereby she couldn't get inside unnoticed. (also helped by the fact that Abuela just appears by the candle. We don't hear her door open, and Mirabel doesn't react to, or notice her, exiting her room).

    • @indulgentenhydra5997
      @indulgentenhydra5997 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yes yes yes! I completely agree. I think Mirabel is Abuela's direct narrative and familial foil, in opposition to her because of Abuela's own sense of not being worthy of the miracle herself. I also believe that the Casita is the spirit of Abuelo Pedro, and that's why it is so happy to play with the kids and to make Mirabel still feel loved and heard.

    I really wish they had dived deeper into the aunt and the pressure associated with her power. As a people pleaser with who deals with depression the whole “it’s ok to not be happy all the time” concept is a hard one to accept, but imagine if you NOT being perfectly happy all the time could cause storms such as hurricanes. That sort of pressure to be happy all the time, never one negative emotion, would be unbearable.

    • @clarksbar711
      @clarksbar711 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I agree this . I noticed immediately... I wonder if because they gave her bags under her eyes because of shoving it all down. They hoped you'd get it without the focus... Show don't tell, type of thing. But I think it maybe missed by the people who need to hear that. It's weird cause she wears her emotions on her sleep but she can't take them to their conclusion... She is more an external emotional meter for the family to show how everyone isn't dealing with their personal emotions and just shoving them down.

      You've overlooked the most important one. I have finally discovered the connection between Mirabel and Abuela. (apart from both of them being able to talk to the Casita)....THE BUTTERFLY. Each member of the Madrigal family who has a gift has embroidery on their clothes that represents their gift....and each one is as unique as the Gift that person possesses. BUT....if you look at the scene where Luisa is panicking about losing her gift, you see a chain at Abuela's waist....WITH A BUTTERFLY ON IT at the top. The butterfly is shown in three places during this movie....etched in the miracle candle, stitched into Mirabel's outfit....and on Abuela's chain at the top....and then the butterflies explode in a a golden shower when Mirabel and Abuela are talking by the river. I think this is PROOF that she and Mirabel share the SAME gift....their connection to the Casita and the Miracle Candle. That was why Mirabel's door didn't work at first...but notice at the end, when Antonio hands Mirabel the doorknob to the Casita....it has an M engraved on it (and every other family member who has a special door has their first initial engraved on THEIR doors as well) and when Mirabel placed the handle on the door....it GLOWED, just like Antonio's door did. THAT was her gift.

    One thing that struck me so hard when re-watching this movie with some friends is how Antonio's first line in the movie is a very worried "What if it doesn't work?". Because he's the one next in line to get a door, he's also grown up with an immense pressure seeing how other's treat Mirabel, feeling like he HAS to get a power or be pushed to the side as she's been. He's been robbed of the chance to have any excitement about it, just anxiety :(

    • @Kahtisemo
      @Kahtisemo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Worst part? I don't think it's how the others would treat him, he's specifically scared of Abuela. Because this is his birthday, a gift should be a wonderful thing, but instead he went into hiding. He's probably heard all week how everything needs to go "perfect" and the next morning we see the first thing he does with his power is try to please her specifically since she comes to the table already wondering how to put his power to use. And then, despite Abuela telling Mirabel to stay out of things, we see Antonio's animals helping her. Even though he doesn't reveal he knew what was going on until they needed a space to work in, I'm sure he knew since the night of his party that something was wrong but was too scared to show it because of how Abuela talked down to Mirabel when she got caught.

  • @LordBunnyBone

    About Dolores, Bruno was absolutly right about his vision, Isabella was betrophed to Dolores's true love.
    Also you have to remember that Bruno got his gift at 5yo. A small child running around trying his gift or asking innocent questions. If he tells you that you are gonna break a leg but you don't know when is worse than suddenly breaking a leg. Can you try to escape your own future or do you live in fear waiting for it to happen.
    Isabella's life is bound by the expectation of Abuela, Luisa sees her own worth in her power and nothing else and nobody places any expectation in Mirabel as she is a normal human.
    Also everyone who has powers has them embroided on their clothes Bruno has Hourglasses, Julietta cooking utensils, Pepa has suns, Isabella has flowers, Dolores has soundwaves, Luisa has weights and Camilo has chameleons for example. Mirabel shares butterflies with Abuela, the candle and there are butterflies on her grandfathers portrait. So Mirabel seems to be the next Keeper of the Miracle in a way or the next Matriarch.

      to add to the butterfly: a butterfly lead Abuela’s sight to Pedro pretty much. and the butterfly was important with the vision/when Mirabel mended things with Abuela. literally a kaleidoscope of butterflies flies around then when they embrace. the song lyrics in those moments are talking of caterpillars and butterflies which symbolizes the transformations for the family/Mirabel becoming the next Matriarch.

      "no one sees this as strange, including her" hilariously, Mirabel does see it as strange. If you watch her during Isabella and Luisa's numbers being the more surreal sections, Mirabel looks confused or scared or trying to grab onto things which characters don't normally do during the "fun" songs in other movies. Usually they get tossed around playfully because these moments are supposed to be full of whimsey.

    The colour thing I think is to help the audience quickly see who belongs on each side of the family. Merabels family are all wearing cool tones.. so blues and purples. Pepa's family are wearing warm colours like yellow, oranges and reds. I think is like a film shortcut to help the audience figure out who is who while we don't know their names. Also as a bonus merabels Mum wears blue and Pepa wears yellow and Bruno is in the middle with green. Think that's cool as yellow and blue make green. Fun

      I don't think they want people to keep track of the families though. Keeping track would have been so much easier if the intro song had been slightly less chaotic. I like that it was chaotic because obviously Mirabel was trying to distract from herself, but I didn't actually learn anything about the family, which was the point. It did make the family feel a lot bigger than it was, which I think was intentional, but it was really confusing so if they really wanted us to know who belonged to which family they should have tried to show us from the beginning. It's only 2 families of 5, Bruno and Abuela, it's really not that hard to keep track of but they made it overwhelming so that you don't even try. If they don't want you to keep track because they want the family to feel bigger than it is why would they color code it to help the audience keep track? I guess maybe to give you a bit of balance?

    mirabel's "power" is pretty explicitly casita itself. she's the one who is in sync with the house the most, and she's the only other family member aside from abuela alma who's associated with butterflies (even baby mirabel's celebration outfit has butterflies all over it). the candle has the butterfly emblazoned on it, alma has butterfly motifs in her skirt, mirabel has butterflies on her skirt and on her blouse, casita has butterfly designs all over it. that's why mirabel's the one who can help heal the cracks and why casita starts tearing itself apart during the argument with abuela alma: the two mistresses of the house were at such odds it was literally tearing the house apart. we can also infer that mirabel became the mistress of the house because antonio's gift is stated in the movie as being the first gift they have to "find a use for." mirabel just wants antonio to be happy and enjoy his gift, that's why the animal obsessed five-year-old got the ability to talk to animals. every other power beforehand is something that would have been useful during alma and pedro's escape from violence. oh, and her doorknob becomes the catalyst for the new casita. abuela saw to the family's physical well-being, now mirabel sees to their emotional and spiritual well-being.
    also the color coding is 100% so you can visually tell who's a sibling and who's a cousin. mirabel's side of the family is in cool jewel tones while pepa's side is in warm yellows/oranges while bruno's in earth tones.

Another example, Camilo likes to entertain, prank and tell stories, the abilities to shapeshift is PERFECT for that. Dolores has super hearing, she often gossips and eavesdrop on people from miles away (although I guess that comes with the gift). Just a theory doe

    I think the creators had Antonio get his gift so that Mirabel can have her song “Waiting on A Miracle” or rather what it stands for. The song is the first sign that we see Mirabel isn’t okay with her not getting a gift (which is the first one we see the cracks in the house) and near the end when Mirabel and Abuela were arguing, the cracks are magnified. Even after they stop fighting, the cracks keep spreading because Mirabel already said how Abuela was disappointed than Mirabel didn’t get a gift (as if it was her fault somehow)
    The extra “salt in the wound” is that BEFORE Mirabel gets her gift, Abuela tells her that her gift will be as special as she is, but she didn’t get one. However, almost immediately AFTER Antonio gets his gift, Abuela says the same thing to him and Mirabel has that moment of proudness and jealousy and sadness and anger all wrapped into one which comes out in the song.

I think the house chose her to be Abuela's successor, the next leader of the family, who doesn't have a special "power" because the whole house and family are her power.

    Lin Manuel Miranda does for Disney exactly what Alan Menken and Howard Ashman did. A good musical has songs that further the plot, not halt it. If a story completely has to stop just for a song to play it’s not a good song for a musical. Lin understands this so well, his songs are almost like dialogue. The story can’t function without them. He even got a writing credit for Encanto because his songs were THAT essential to the plot. It really feels like we’re in a second renaissance right now without even knowing it.

  • @ninaswoboda886
    @ninaswoboda886 2 ปีที่แล้ว +54

    i actually found that this 'pressure from above' under which all the family members except the abuela seem to suffer is specifically visualised through the abuelas interactions with pepa. because pepa is just running around with all her emotions and since, thanks to her gift, she cant keep them to themselves everyone notices what she is feeling. and whenever she has 'a cloud', like a negative emotion, is excited, anxious or angry, her abuela always says 'calm down, you have a cloud' and it has impacted pepa so much, that she just tries to only create clear skies (as seen right before the 'we dont talk about bruno' song) that she sort of oppresses all her other emotions. and at the end, with bruno and her husband felix saying that she should let everything out and with the scene of her and felix dancing under one of her clouds and everyone supporting it, its just the final visual tell for the character development that the whole family has gone through. another moment where the controlling nature of the abuela shines through is a very subtle move when the whole family is eating breakfast and the topic of isabelas engagement to mariano arises (dolores says 'tonight, he wants five babies'), isabela grows pink flowers and one white flower on her head and her abuela stands above her, talking about how perfect and good the match is for everyone, and plucks the white flower, thus letting it fall to the ground. this symbolizes for one isabelas pressure of being perfect, since one flower was out of place, and for another the issue of the abuela, who sees the imperfection and litterally tries to root it out. i'm just amazed and awestruck with the detailing and underlying metaphors in this movie that sort of only become clear after watching the movie several times.

    28:00 it's not necessarily that Bruno's vision about Dolores turns out to be "wrong" per se; I think it's more along the lines of the listener always has an opportunity to choose what to do with the information they hear from Bruno since his visions are always rather open ended. Bruno tells Dolores her true love is "out of reach" and betrothed to another; he never says Dolores will never be with the man of her dreams. While Dolores could have easily accepted that she will never be with Mariano, Dolores ultimately chooses to pursue and win him (once realizing Isabela isn't a factor, of course), if that makes sense.

The main antagonist of Encanto is Abuela's *trauma* and I loved that!

    I say Encanto is a great movie that talks about how everyone is special, no matter if they have a gift or not, but what always matters is to never pressure anyone in your family to uphold expectations. One must let everyone pursue or do what they want to do, otherwise the pressure will cause everyone to feel a burden in some way. Like with Louisa, she’s strong and capable of lifting super heavy stuff (houses and mountains, etc), but the grandmother of the family doesn’t see that as being “good enough,” as Mirabel says to her grandmother. And going to Mirabel, even though she doesn’t have a supernatural gift like everyone else, she does have a gift (as someone else mentioned): leadership. She’s keeping the family together as best as she can, and she’s able to help Louisa out, despite not liking her before. And at the end, she’s the one that brings the house back to life after putting the doorknob in, she’s keeping the family in check, she’s the heart of the cards, she’s the true leader that helps and keeps her family happy and well. Mirabel not being the kind of Disney Princess with a supernatural gift, or having a high class family (if that even makes sense) makes her the first Disney Princess that’s the most realistic of the bunch. She doesn’t need a gift to be special, she is special for helping her family out. That’s what I love about Encanto, and I hope that movie wins some awards for that

    I find it interesting that each member of the family represents a role in a “toxic family”

    Fun fact: while Bruno sings "let it in, let it out, let it rain, let it snow, let it go," they actually put the little piano intro from Let It Go into the backing track for that part. It's really easy to hear if you're listening to just the instrumental track, but you can definitely hear it in the original, too, if you're paying attention. This is by far my favorite Disney easter egg ever.

    I feel like the house gives them the specific power to help with their insecurities. Like maybe Antonio is scared of people; talking to them or being surrounded. So the house gave him the ability to talk to animals to get him out of his shell. The brother of Antonio who can shape shift is nervous to be himself, or believes himself to not be good enough. When the grandmother says we need another Jose, not will you help Jose. The mother who heals is scared to see her family in pain, something she grew up seeing, so she is able to heal everyone. Bruno wants to protect the family from never having the past happening again, sees the future.

In other words, Casita did the best it could.

    As a person who identifies as neurodiverse, I felt deeply connected with Mirabel throughout the movie. The fact that there was never an explanation for why she didn't get a gift is really beautiful and real; most of us who are different simply will never get an answer that explains or even justifies why we have to work so much harder to do the same things other people seem effortlessly capable of. At the end of the movie, the family finally comes to understand and validate Mirabel's experience, and sees all of her beyond just someone who didn't get a gift.
    Also, I've seen a lot of thoughts about how Mirabel's "gift" is empathy, leadership, etc. While Mirabel definitely has these traits, I would argue that it was her not getting a gift that allowed these to be cultivated. The rest of the family was basically told what their talent would be when they got their gift, and those are the only skills that were really nurtured or encouraged. Mirabel, meanwhile, had to discover her strengths on her own.

      I agree. I don't really like the whole "Oh, Mirabel had a gift, it is this" because that kills the idea behind the movie, imo.
      The reason why Mirabel isn't special, is because she doesn't have a gift. Why is Mirabel special, is because she doesn't have a gift.
      Imo, the movie is about emotional neglect, specifically from Abuela, and social isolation within a family unite.
      The reason why she is the one to destroy and rebuild the house, is because the abuse has to end, not because she is special in any way. She is the one being abused, she is the one to call it out.
      Sidenote, I am also neurodivergent and I also really related to Mirabel and I loved the scene with her and her little cousin

He just didn't understand when/how they were going to happen and so didn't know what the vision meant, only that Mirabel was going to be important to the future of the family miracle. He actually talks about how the vision is showing things out of order when they're viewing it together in Antonio's room.
      The point about the proposal being interrupted is an interesting point though. Were they actually "betrothed"? Without seeing what his vision was or knowing what he actually said to Dolores it's hard to say what the truth is. Bruno seeing the proposal, but not the aftermath could be one explanation, or perhaps Bruno told her that the man of her dreams would be "promised" to another and over the course of the ~10 years he's been gone Dolores mis-remembered it as "betrothed".

The reason the house is breaking is because her family does not appreciate her. Even though she does all she can to stay happy every time someone mentions something about her not having a gift her feelings get hurt . Resulting in the cracks that Bruno has been patching since her ceremony. The house completely brakes and the magic disappears when heart is finally broken by her grandma. Just a thought.

    35:28. This is actually somewhat simple. Abuela caused the Miracle to falter resulting in Mirabel not getting a gift. This is due to Abuela's high expectations of her family and slow change into caring more about reputation than her family. Soon after Mirabel's door disappeared Abuela asked Bruno to have his vision. As everyone only thought bad of him rather than trying to help him figure out his visions, he hid it from the family and 'left' to protect Mirabel. Antonio is able to receive a gift as he asks for Mirabel to be with him and despite Abuela not wanting Mirabel to 'interfear', she helps him. This is when the miracle sees Mirabel's love for the family, grants Antonio a gift, and in my head cannon, helps Mirabel become the next head of the Madrigal family and Abuela's successor.

      The thing that is missing from most understanding of this movie is the true and horrific truth that, aside from Syria, Colombia has the highest number of internally displaced people due to the armed conflict among its government, far right groups, drug cartels and other factions. Abuela is not rigid and strict about the family and their intended roles because she cares about the family name or reputation- it's because they depend on them for their literal survival.
      She held on too much to the miracle because she's deathly afraid of how vulnerable they are, as she says to Pedro's after Mirabel spoke of the cracks to Casita. If they lose their power, if the miracle fades, if the encanto crumbles, they will be lost again.

    So I have an unpopular theory for why Mirabel didn't get her gift. (The popular theory being that she is meant to be the next candle holder and since the current one was still alive, Mirabel's powers didn't manifest yet).
    My alternative theory is: MIRABEL unintentionally and very subtly DISRUPTED HER OWN GIFT GIVING CEREMONY. In the ceremony, every child is shown touching the candle, that is being held by Abeula, and then touching the door.
    HOWEVER, Mirabel has a step, (that was deliberately animated imo - why else show it) inbetween. SHE RUBS HER HANDS ON HER DRESS BEFORE SHE TOUCHES THE DOOR (probably as a nervous tick). I think this could have interrupted the magic somehow - she rubbed off the magic. She did the ceremony wrong. That's why she didn't get a power.
    She wasn't chosen, or so special that she wasn't given something special. It was a fluke. She made a mistake. And this set off a butterfly effect (see what I did there), that caused uncertainty, stress, pressure, anxiety, familial strain and ultimately Cassita, the family and the miracle falling apart.
    Now as to what her powers could be, I don't really know.
    I think all the characters probably showed small indications of what their power would be before they got it. Their powers are based on their personalities, not the other way around.
    Antonio has a pet bird before he can talk to animals, Abuela was wishing for a miracle to save them and then she gained the ability to give miracles etc. This also comes through with Isabella and Louisa who have gifts according to their typical roles in the family.
    So looking at Mirabel's personality, I know some other theories besides candle holder include strengthening or weaking other’s gifts, emotional healing rather than physical healing (which her mom can already do), or maybe something to do with transforming people, things or places in some other way, given all the butterfly symbolism.
    But I'll leave that part up to @SuperCarlinBrothers to discuss.

    I think Mirabell has a unique emotional intelligence. She is able to learn from and have compassion for those who have been the catalyst for her persecution. Everyone gather for a Madrigal family photo without noticing or having concern that she wasn’t in it.
    Mirabell has a special connection to the house and magic, just like her grandmother. I think her power will prove to be as the new “matriarch” or the casita as her grandmother ages out. She gained perspective to maintain the magic of the household. You can see this as the center of the new magical doors at the end.

    ngl I feel like the “why mirabel..” is a relic of western storytelling, I don’t necessarily believe there’s a why and that isn’t for me a bad thing. It did skip her and the story is the causal sequence of events that happened in direct relation to it. I don’t think it was predetermined as well, Bruno says her future was undecided and he only came to have this vision after she didn’t get a door, this leads me believe the future in this universe is undecided, so previous to that night she might have been supposed to get powers who knows. Its a soft magic system so it does be like that imo.
    My conclusion though is that even if theres a hidden reason that hasn’t been well communicated by the writer (something that can be critiqued) Mirabel doesn’t need to be “special”. I think the movie does work best if it considers us special just for existing and not for our unique roles in our families or communities, because if its shes not different than the others and the “im worthless if I don’t fulfill my role” cycle would continue. To quote Isabela “what could I do if I just knew it didn’t need to be perfect, It just needed to be and they let me be”.

    There was definitely a butterfly motif tying Mirabel to the candle. Similar to the sun motif in Tangled. I also think there’s something with her having the embroidery all over her clothes and belongings. The thread that holds the family together.

    I'm dyslexic, in my family I was never seen as able as my older siblings, and our mother was a narcissist who needed her children to be perfect to show how good she was. I could never measure up to any of my siblings accomplishments, so to save my sanity I went no contact with all of them, as they all competed with each other to be the best. It was toxic and I only learned to like myself after getting away from them all.

      the one problem about this movie changing the way disney makes animated films (I'd be totally down for if it does) is that it'd probably be another 10 years before anything actually changes because it takes so long for that kind of thing to happen in the animation business

    Something that’s exclusively unique with this Disney movie that made it skyrocket in terms of my personal score, is that there wasn’t a a big adventure or quest the protagonist had to go on to solve the plot. It was all (quite literally) IN-HOUSE; there wasn’t an event that occurred that spurred the rest of the movie into action.
    Through exposition and dialog the audience sees that the problem of the magic fading has been slowing building up overtime- it wasn’t suddenly falling apart because one specific thing happened.
    I just loved that there wasn’t a big life changing adventure to go on, what happens WAS life changing but no one needed to GO anywhere to make it happen.

    It's the battle between expectations and responsibility. All three daughters are very responsible people under the crushing weight of abuela's expectations so they just want to fit in the family's grand plan.
    Also, I think Mirabel ends up inheriting abuela's power and becomes the new head of the family, which could mean that the candle is sensing that abuela was close to death, which makes it a liiiiiittle creepy. I do think that the power of the candle wavering was a signal of abuela's imminent death.

    21:12 my theory is gift are given based on interest. Mirabelle starts off the movie listening to a story for grandparents her family. She Interact with the house like abuela. Her first song is about her family.
    Mirabella's chosen because her love for her family and the house knew she'd be a good keeper.
    Like the house chose the Doctor Doolittle powers for Antonio because he loves animals.

This movie is the best animated told story, how ever I wished we had more time spent with other Madrigal family members. there are loads of opportunities in the story I feel left out because of time.

      Lin Manuel Miranda said in an interview (on the podcast Disney’s For Scores) that the challenge of the movie was if they could KEEP all the characters. They easily could have dropped Pepa’s family entirely, but it was important for them to show this big, exciting family. So in other words, it was impossible to do justice to ALL the characters, but it’s integral to the story that they are there.

    One thing that jumped at me in the scene with Isabella is how thoughtful they were of flipping the coin on the narrative. While the movie is a lot about "you can make great things happen without being considered gifted", that scene jumps out to me. Because all of a sudden the emotion seeping through is "with everything you got, how can you have problems?" and I feel like this is such an important moment in the movie. It makes it go from this view of the oppressed saving the world to realizing that while you might view someone as having a wonderful life, the truth can be very different from it. It was an amazingly made movie and I loved a lot of it.

    Don't know about anyone else but this is how I viewed the relationship between the candle and the house: magic created candle > candle created house > the candle can effect the house as it created it, but not the other way around as the house is the creation not creator. So at the end the house can help get people to the candle, but it can't move the candle to the people, as it has no control over its creator

    I just wish we could have spent some more time with the individual characters. I'd actually like to see a series with the characters. I know it would be a bit dark for Disney, but maybe set it 10-20 years after the movie with Mirabel assuming the responsibilities of head of household after Abuela Alma's death. (I believe this is why she didn't get a power because she was chosen by the house to succeed Alma.)

    I like to think that the casita is the spirit of their Abuelo Pedro also I haven’t finished the video yet lol so idk if they mentioned this already but I think that the reason mirabel didn’t get a gift (yet) is because Abuela Alma is still alive and her gift is still somewhat I guess taken in a way and I believe when she passes either her door will disappear and be replaced and that door will be for mirabel or idk that door stays and another door appears for mirabel

    Aubela's treatment of Bruno is the immediate catalyst for Mirabel not getting powers. The constant and continuous interpretation of his visions as harbingers of doom and as HIS FAULT overshadowed him as a person: it wasn't Bruno that mattered, it was the use of his powers to make others happy, which was impossible. So, when the house and the candle saw that all Mirabel wanted was to help without any idea of how (unlike everyone else who already has a plan or talent ala MLP), they gave her no magic. "THIS, the child, LOVE, that is your miracle. Not what you can do for others, not this house, not this valley, LOVE and FAMILY. You get no door, you get no new power, you get a PERSON."
    And no one gets it. So, Bruno is given the vision of everything breaking apart but panics and quits before he sees that it all comes back together. And then he runs away, because that is the ONLY way he can possibly help his family. Did you notice not only does Mirabel lives in the tiny nursery with a five-year-old, she shares a toddler-size bed with him. She also appears to make her own clothes and have no other possessions. Mirabel is treated like and unwanted but tolerated pet by her family. This is as close to a Pixar movie as Disney has ever gotten... except Pixar wouldn't have given the magic back.

  • @bbittercoffee
    @bbittercoffee 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    When Mirabel rebuilt that vision, I thought that she was supposed to break the old house so that they could expand or create something new, kind of like a phoenix dying to be reborn again more majestic than it's previous form. It looked like the new house had extra space for new rooms, which seemed to be running pretty tight considering that all the doors were already making a circle around the patio, so in a way, that might've been her true destiny, people were, as always, just afraid of change.
    That, and maybe her power is to be the next matriarch/candlekeeper/abuela of the family, since the door that holds gandma's room doesn't have her name or powers (which she has none, much like mirabel), but her title and function, which could be taken over by anyone.

    I was so worried early on that Mirabel's "power" would be cracking the house.
    It rather played into the house as its own entity better.
    The feeling that she'd have a Deku/Shigaraki My Hero Academia style thing weighed on me for like the first half of the movie.

  • @jackAlope_-ef1re

    I think that the powers are granted by what the child want’s and their personality. Camilo is a trickster, Dolores is a gossip, the mother is caring, Antonio likes animals ect. I believe that mirabel already had what she wanted and was going to receive so she got no power. I don’t think that she will be a candleholder because of the fact that abuela had a door but mirabel doesn’t.
