I was there / it wasn’t a big deal - everyone was enjoying themselves and then at the end he shared the sign with the audience and made a joke about how this was ‘the first show he hasn’t sworn’ - he wasn’t bothered and neither were the audience. They played great and it was an amazing show. It really wasn’t a protest, but yeah on the uae at family friendly events, there is generally a ‘no profanity’ thing.

I've had some experience in the Arabian Penensula/Gulf States. Yes, on the base level they are very strict with their laws about speech and expression, but the secret sauce - usually with the citizens/princes who are actually a very small minority - is to have private shows off in the desert somewhere away from the religious police and other authorities. If you're rich, or literally own the place you can get away with pretty much whatever you want. It's not exactly a secret, but it's not talked about either. Pretty decent underground rave scene, and a pretty decent metal community. (Or just say fuck it and go across the bridge to Bahrain, and what happens there stays there like Hadji Vegas). But public events like this...yeah. Dave's gotta watch his language.

Used to live in UAE. I watched Dave Chapelle do a stand up set in Dubai, there were loads of locals there. He was his usual self dropping f bombs like there’s no tomorrow. It’s a courtesy but never enforced. Regarding foos maybe because the F1 is a family friendly event so it’s more for the children in attendance. Again not enforced, nor would anything had happened.

Believe me _that's_ what he was concerned about; losing a paycheck. He would not have been jailed but there was almost certainly language in the contract for the concert that made it possible for the promoter to deduct or completely withhold their payment for use of profanity. It's the show's promoters (who are usually UAE citizens) that face harsher repercussions from the government if an artist uses profanity than the artist.
The biggest thing/protest that they could have made was not playing there, saying no to the show, and make a statement about it. It truly amazes me and I am even a bit disappointed in them about them playing there knowing what the band and in particular Dave Grohl stand for.

I've been to the UAE (Jebel Ali, Abu Dhabi, Dubai), numerous times, and there's a LOT of western people who visit (Europeans, Americans, etc). They have strict laws. However, you have to be an asshole before they go after you. Be respectful and don't draw attention and you'll be alright.

Dave Grohl, is hands down the most overrated “musician” on earth. He put out joke music after Kurt’s passing riding his waves cause he knew people would eat it up in the industry. He’s more of a business man then he is musician. He’s no better than your average garage rocker who is extremely lucky and made some smart decisions to become rich.

If he really wanted to make a statement, he could have refused the paycheck. Also, I doubt if they'd put him in jail, but it was probably in his contract that he'd get a hefty fine deducted from his guarantee if the used any profanity.
He couldn't help himself. His crew likely had to print that out to remind him out of protection but he had to point out how ridiculous it is that they had to do such a thing.
We have to respect other countries laws and culture when visiting a country. As Americans we can’t feel entitled to be above another country’s laws while visiting that country. Getting arrested overseas for violating a country’s laws is real. Unfortunately look what happened to the WNBA player that wound up spending time in jail in Russia.

We all think we're hardcore but all musicians follow this simple rule. Sometimes it's a biker birthday party with kids and you know better than to curse and use foul language. Weddings and other venues are typically sensitive crowds. You get more respect being tactful with your cursing on stage.
