  • In this video I talk about Yorkshire Terrier Temperament. The Yorkshire terrier is bold, intelligent and independent. Many people see a Yorkshire terrier for sale and think about getting a Yorkie puppy without finding out the Yorkshire terrier facts. They are not a purse puppy, or an accessory, they are tough little terriers with tons of personality and energy. As someone who has owned Yorkshire Terriers for the past 20 years (and had one as a pet as a child) I share my Yorkshire terrier breed information that I have learned. They are charming, spirited and energetic.

    My 6 month old Nila matches a lot of what you described. She is loving & has such a human like personality. She’d be the worst watch dog, her tail wags for strangers & anything in her view lol. She can be very independent which I don’t mind but when I need her by my side she’s eager to please. These munchkins will steal your heart.

      Good morning:). Nila sounds like the perfect companion. Yorkies make every single day better by making us laugh and smile, and being such wonderful company. When people tell me "they don't like small dogs" I tell them: "they must not know any yorkies yet:" Have a great day! Megan

    Lotus is our girl and all of my past Yorkies were boys. So different in comparison. You were spot on. I made the mistake after my boy Silas passed at 20yrs, to carry Lotus( our girl) around and never harness her so she doesn't like harnesses. Other than that, her behavior is great, her temperament is why I love her. She is an alpha girl but sweet, and is independent yet likes to cuddle at will.

      @@MeganGraham yes, exactly. I have a dog and I think she is a terrier, in my country walking dogs is eligal, so we had to pick her up often, and to the point we couldn't take her out anymore, which it led to her being aggressive towards other humans. She is cute and fluffy which it makes it hard to keep people away from her..... it's very important to let dogs walk, meet other dogs, and communicate with other humans.

    I have a 5 yo female Yorkie. She doesn't tolerate other animals; she sits in the corner, goes in the bedroom, or throws herself flat out on the floor; she won't fight or approach but she won't eat, drink, or come near when an animal visits. She has never growled, snarled, snapped at, or bit anyone (never known a dog to be like this). She much prefers humans but her favourite is the mailman b/c he gives her gifts through the mail slot! She knows when the mail truck is in the parking lot and runs to the door when she hears it. I wish I could post a video. She plays like a cat. She twirls in circles when excited. When she wants me to go to bed, she whines while carrying a toy in her mouth and walks back and forth between me and the bedroom.

    I have a bell on my Yorkie's collar so I don't step on him. I had one on my late Maltese and it really helped me to not step on him. I can hear every move he makes. He's gotten so used to wearing it that when I bathe him and have to take off his collar, he comes running when I shake the collar because he's so used to wearing it.

    • @MeganGraham
      @MeganGraham  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I had the same thing for Lola when she was a baby. After I accidentally shut her in the fridge I realized that I needed to keep better track of her because she was so tiny and silent. I wound up getting a cat collar and it worked very well.

      @@juliabernard125 First of all, I am so very sorry for your loss. We love our yorkies with every ounce and fiber of our being, which makes losing them that much more painful. I lost my sweet boy Teddy two years ago and my hear aches for him. I got Alfie (my dog in the center of the video thumbnail) only 2 months after I lost Teddy and I think it is a good thing. I still grieved for Teddy even after getting Alfie, but it gave my heart some much needed joy. One dog will never replace another, but having some joy in your life is wonderful. I have had 5 yorkies, I did tend to carry them as the were my therapy animals. It is too hot to let the walk on asphalt or concrete in 80 to 100° weather. As with snow I am not going to let them walk in chest high snow or on snow melt chemicals. I did walk them and play when it was suitable and have indoor tubes and obstacles course. I don't let them bark or develop food aggression, and socialize properly. I was serious about a reputable breeder. The last two I know have either died or moved away. It is hard to find someone with good breeding, consistency and not be in bred or the moms bred too many times. I have adopted females rather than let them be bred again. I love this breed and my asthma loves them too.

    Hey there, thanks for that great information. I am in my 60s and I’ve had several dogs throughout my life but right now I do not have a dog. I was thinking as I usually get small dogs that are Yorky being hypoallergenic and small enough to pick up would be a good dog for me… I do understand about starting from the very beginning, letting my dog know that I am the dominant in the household and I definitely do the thing with the food that you suggest. I think it’s good for them to know who gives the food and that you give it out when you want to. I’ve been watching some of the videos that Cesar the dog whisperer has been putting out about training dogs and those are really helpful.
    I was just curious if you know any Yorkies that are good and social with other dogs or do they always kind of like to be alone and do not prefer to socialize with other dogs? I thought that might be an interesting piece of information to add to your video just in case someone is hoping to get a Yorky and bring it to other peoples houses where there might be dogs and children etc.
    Thank you so much. Have a great day.

      I think that there are lots of Yorkies that really enjoy being with other dogs. It just depends on the dog, but especially if there’s only one and you socialize it really well it should be just fine.

    Your description of Yorkie temperament sounds accurate to me. My first Yorkie, Zeus didn’t like his feet touched, was aggressive around food, was possessive of toys & me, and would bite the brush when I tried to groom him. Our Vet told me to rub his feet several times throughout the day to get him use to it and to pick up his bowl while he was eating so he would learn not to be aggressive around food. When he would get aggressive with our other puppy, the Vet told us to pick him up by the scruff of his neck to calm him because that’s what a mother dog would do. He turned into a very patient dog during grooming so I was able to keep his hair long his entire life. He remained somewhat nippy with the other dog around food/toys, but fine with people until he lost most of his hearing & sight. He was never aggressive with me though. He was a very special little guy. I now have a girl that looks a lot like him and has all of his wonderful, Yorkie characteristics without the negative ones. Ziva has her own unique personality while retaining everything I love about the Yorkie breed. In two weeks we will be bringing home an adorable little boy. I can’t wait to discover his individual quirks!

      @MeganGraham  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love how you are so respectful to your dogs personalities. Just like people they do have their quirks, but I think that we can learn how to speak their love language… And how to be gentle with them and to make them happy all while still being “the alpha dog”.

    Yorkers are down to play and have fun 24/7. I’ve never seen any other breed of dog love Toys so much and love playing catch. They are excellent watch dogs, and extremely loving. There’s a reason they are in demand so much. Their temperament far exceeds their looks in my opinion. The only negative I can think of is that they usually bark at children.

    My yorkie ( mr squeakers ) is 2yrs old and weighs 15 lbs. The breeder explained occasionally one will hold to the original genetics and she called them "big boys". He's not fat and solid muscle. One day we were on our porch and the neighbors 60lb pitbull got away and came up 5 steps onto our porch. Mr squeakers charged the pittbull bit him on the face knocked him down the steps onto his back and started biting his hind quarters. Thank God the pittie was a sweetheart of a dog, and we got them apart easily. I was shocked because he's an affectionate litte guy. Who would have thought.

    Great stuff. As you note, with every interaction, one party is being trained. Either you or the dog. It needs to be the dog.
    Excellent point about getting the dog used to being handled when it eats. Resource guarding is not cool.
    Related note. I was not a K9 guy with PD, but I worked with a lot of them. One big thing I was told a few times is to play a lot of tug of war with puppies, ensuring that that *the dog wins* nearly every time. This used to be discouraged, until the "alpha" status thing got debunked. As more was learned about canine behavior, it became clear that the most aggressive dogs tend to bite out of fear. What you want is a dog that is so confident that he does not feel the need to get the first strike in.

    I would so love to know where you obtained your little yorkies. I recently lost my baby of 17 years and I am finding absolute scammers. Yours are beautiful and look similar to mine. Is it possible to obtain the info on where you get your babies?

    What kibble do you feed them?

    • @MeganGraham
      @MeganGraham  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good morning Jazmine:). I don't actually feed them Kibble, I feed them fresh, human grade food by a company called Just Food For Dogs and they LOVE it so much. I used to feed them kibble, but I realized that it wasnt't the healthiest opyion for dogs. I hope this helps:). Megan

      I would get the book that I linked you in my description by the monks of new skeet. It’s called the art of raising a puppy. Sounds like some training issues. The book will clear it all up for you. Your puppy is training you…

    I have a teacup yorkie and he’s name is Max. He is a little spoiled but he only barks when someone is at the door. He currently weighs 1.09 kg and he is 4months old, any recommendations ? Please drop them in the reply section !
