Indeed - every pop act nowadays seems to be compartmentalised into some little marketing demographic box and to have all the life groomed out of it! And whilst openly gay artists are everywhere now, they're styled by their record labels to look acceptable to grannies in the suburbs.
I like the Peter Gunn type riff. Cool song! I bought this Almond and Gary Numans Replicas when they came out. I was into Synth Pop when everyone else was listening to Aerosmith.
I was about 20 when this song was out. They were on the pulse of the early eighties. If you can't relate to this song, you may be soulless🤔 l just read the lyrics after all these years, brought me to tears, mostly because of my kids and the struggle they're having finding truth and meaning in these perilous times. "But could only play it when the parents were out"? No problem if you were from a non-English speaking country. It's highley likely your parents wouldn't have understood one single word.
Mark is miming to this in 81 and could have probably sang it better live, absolute incredible talent and an artist that will go down in history as one of the best writers and singers of his generation.

@@NachtSchreck13, where exactly is this underground music scene that 20-something contrarians keep telling the rest of us exists? And when are any of its acts going to break through to the mainstream?
@@mbrady2329 The underground scene is well, underground, and very localized usually only playing gigs in small venues and house parties. At least thats my experience. And a couple of emo soundcloud rappers have seen mainstream fame so theyre not all obscure.

I found this song very poignant as I used to go to cocktail parties in Earls Court & the whole area was full of young (& old) people who only knew others via Facebook....

There can never be another Soft Cell.
Gritty realism, with a dash of sleaze.
And gorgeous as hell especially marc

Says it all in a few mins, genius.
Youve got to have lived the eighties to accept the campness of the acts, this song sent shivers through me after all the years.

Well said and accurate. You had to have lived through it.
You don't have to live in a time to really feel the music silly oldz
@shoopdawoopi I agree, but it does help! I'll take you in my time machine + show you
Shit!!! I'm 19 and I feel it more than my parents in their mid50s! I live the style and music more than anything else
"Bed sit land my only home"
If that doesn't describe being hungover I don't know what does. Marc is so brilliant!
What a tune. His english voice and the beat are just amazing. I wasn't even born when it came out and I love it.
True. I was also born after, in 1984 in Kyiv, Ukraine

Best band ever. Wonderful. I was in Leeds at the time, at the university!!
What is there not to like in Marc Almond's voice?
It sticks to your ears like a magnet.
Only if you have metal ears, or bloody huge ear rings!
They may have paved the way for Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Cutting edge!
Non stop erotic cabaret, best 80's album. But could only play it when the parents were out....seedy lyrics.
