There's a great story about them. Kaufman did an early performance of his Tony Clifton character at a comedy night club Dangerfield ran. At one point with the audience jeering him he yells out "I demand respect!" and Rodney was doubled over in laughter at his line being used this way. Two comedy legends.
Fun fact: Dangerfield was a HUGE Tony Clifton fan - and had Clifton open for him in San Francisco. It was the famous show where they had to put chicken wire over the stage to keep Clifton from getting things thrown at him. In fact, Andy was STABBED during the run, but the Tony Clifton fat padding he wore protected him from sustaining any damage.
@Master Of Puppets I'm pretty sure that while the basic outline of the stories and what would be going on from scene to scene was scripted, Kaufman's lines - his actual dialogue - was very much improvised. Also, maybe this person never watched Taxi or wasnt too familiar with it and mainly knew him for some of his other work. He was a hugely talented, highly successful comedian who branched out into a lot of different comedic avenues. From stand-up to talk show appearances to sketch comedy to sitcoms to movies to documentaries to general performance art, even busking! And all of it in both the scripted and improvisational format! You know, at the time I didn’t pay much attention to Andy Kaufman. Now that I’m older and watch his many different characters, he truly was a comic genius.
There will never be another Rodney Dangerfield, He was so funny and yet he was a very depressed man. He took a lot from his life and wrote jokes about it. They claim he was a really good man and helped a lot of comedians get started
"Hey, Doc. You want me to go in and take off all my clothes?" "What do you want? Me to get sick??" The look on Nurse Roxie's face when she looks at the camera after she says the name of Vinnie's new book, 'The Way You Made Love Last Winter, You Ruined My Spring'. Ba-dum!
This was not shown in the man on the moon movie and Rodney Dangerfield was not mentioned either but it might not have been a big enough part of his career to bring up in the film and imagine how hard it would be to cast someone as Rodney Dangerfield in a biopic of him well I'm sure there is a few similar characters around!
Rodney was the King. Andy was on the way up who knows where he would be now. He was more about enjoying himself by messing with others and that's where the comedy came from.
I wonder if this character inspired Dr. Nick from The Simpsons. The character design is not dissimilar from Andy's look here. I'm pretty sure at some point Dr. Nick does a line similar to "Are you a Doctor, too?" line from about 0:40
Is it me or does anyone else think that smoking Dr Boombatz sounded too much like Tony Clifton ??? 🤔😄. Andy's timing for this sketch was impeccable, what a talent !!!
Ironically enough, Andy Kaufman may have died because he had his own Dr. Vinnie Boombatz. He had a persistent cough for a month and his doctor told him nothing was wrong. he got a second opinion (alright! you're ugly too!) and learned he had carcinoma in his lungs. It spread to his brain and that is what did him in. RIP, Andy Kaufman.
I went to my doctor last week. He asked "What seems to be the problem." I told him that I keep dreaming I'm a pair of curtains. Can you help me?" He said "You need to pull yourself together".
"ohhh my doctor, you know my doctor? Dr. Vinnie Bommbatz. He's getting old, I gotta get a new doctor. Last time I went in to see him, he grabbed my knee and told me to cough, then he hit me in the balls with a hammer!" Much respect to both of comedic legends!
Plus most modern late night talk shows think great comedy is making each subject into some stupid political matter. In these days a skit was an original piece of comedy that was wholesome yet funny for anyone watching, and the hosts in this era could take some notes to improve their act. I mean Jimmy Fallon doesn't even respect the people he interviews on each episode of Saturday Night Live half the time; the idiot pulls fake laughing every five seconds especially when the person's comment is not an intended joke at all. People need to leave the politics and jokes aside in their own areas, and push for more creativity that the skits lack now.
Not trying to make a long rant here, but these cringe hosts need to hear all of this sooner than later. Trevor Noah is even political to a certain extent on his show. Why does comedy end up in a bias political view?
Kaufman and Dangerfield in the same sketch - two incredible legends who can never get enough respect, as far as I'm concerned.

I'll never forget watching him do his Presley performance, it was great and funny too !!!

@Big Cat Little Lion that's true it's a very common mistake people make , perfectly understandable
@Big Cat Little Lion Andy played Tony Clifton most of the time. Andy’s sidekick Bob played him sometimes too.
