Brazil is in my top ten list of favorite movies. I have seen it with the happy and the unhappy ending. I prefer happy endings, but in the case of Brazil the unhappy ending was best. Even though Sam Lowry is captured in the end and we see him in a chair tied down, we see his mind is still free. They can take a mans body, but not his soul. I love that movie. There are so many unforgettable scenes in the movie, it is filled with an unending stream of visual candy.It never gets old and even though I have seen it a dozen times I can watch it today with anticipation and delight.

I watched Brazil for the first time the other day. Incredible movie. I can't remember the last time I thought about a film for the next few days after watching it.
I'm not nearly as big a fan of Terry Gilliam's live action films as I am of his work for Monty Python, but I still admire the man, with his tenacity, rebellious nature, absurdist imagination and creative vision, and whenever he turns out a movie, I may not always like it, but I can still appreciate it in some form, be it from a technical level, from an entertainment level, or both. I do also love how this video was done in the style of the Monty Python cutout animations that Gilliam made. Nice homage. And a great video essay in general.
A few titles missing from the list at the beginning. I understand skipping over them in the telling of the story presented here, but still superb films and in the case of 12 Monkeys and The Fisher King triumphant successes. I met Terry Gilliam on the set of The Fisher King completely unaware of what he'd just been through right before that with Munchausen-which I absolutely loved. It was a thrill to watch him working and getting to speak to not only him, but also Robin Williams; 2 of my heroes since childhood.
That movie "Tideland" that he made with the little girl who helps prepare her old ex-rock star daddy's heroin but then he dies and it turns into a surreal "Weekend At Bernie's" situation (sorta) but also there's a steampunk witch-person that turns out to be the dead junkie daddy's old sweetheart from way back, damn, that was a strange film, and he clearly didn't have access to much of a budget, but Terry Gilliam is a visionary and it's a shame he's had such a rough time of it...

Longtime fan of Gilliam. How long, you ask? I saw the Houston premiere of BRAZIL at a small theatre, now gone, in The Galleria. Hardly anyone in the audience (I think it was a matinee showing), and I was floored at the inventiveness and quality start to finish. Also a big fan of the underrated Munchausen - the scene with Venus and Mars was spectacular! Don Quixote is in my queue, and I've probably seen everything else TG has done. Thanks as always for an excellent vid! Sidenote: There's an animated Russian b/w Munchausen from 1929 on the YT channel ALL SOVIET MOVIES ON RVISION. Check it out - it's animation, after all ;-)

Man, thank GOD we audiences managed to see Brazil as it was intended. Can you IMAGINE if the Sheinberg cut was actually released worldwide? Honestly, the fact that Gilliam finally managed to complete Don Quixote after 20 years of hell really shows just how much he had to put up with. The man truly has guts of steal.
Scheinberg's version was aired on american TV. I was telling a friend of mine to see the film and she saw the wrong version and couldn't understand why I was singing its praises. I have only watched it with fascinating running commentary explaining the omissions and substitutions made, and how they change Sam Lowry's character by making him completely unaware of what's going on rather than being caught up as part of it. As an editor I found it very informative, and quite terrifying.
Gilliam was contracted to bring in the movie at just under two hours. He didn't. Brazil was about 20 minutes too long. If he had brought it to the studio for the agreed length, Universal would have had to release it as is. He refused to cut the movie the duration he had been contracted to bring it in at. Hence the "war" and Battle for Brazil. If Shienberg had then re-cut his shortened version of Brazil, Gilliam would've been able to sue Universal. There's no mention of this in the video above though. Hmmm...

Terry Gilliam is exactly the type of genius that Disney/Marvel would never hire for their superhero/remake franchises. Instead they hire these little mini-auteurs to do hack-work but give some 31 flavors variety to what is essentially a homogenous product line. Gilliam wanted to do Harry Potter. Instead Universal went with.... Chris Columbus. The HP films might actually have had some value as pieces of cinema if Terry Gilliam had been involved.

But today, being artistically drained, angry and uneasy because of setbacks with a project that nobody asked or payed for (or ever will), that I quit my job as an editor for to focus on - I teared up at your description of Munchausen despite the circumstances of it's making. This is a great essay.

This is great that you did it in stop motion, it's done very creatively and it ads so much to the video. Not that the regular ones are bad (and they are probably faster to do) but it's cool to see different types of stuff from time to time

Brazil's one of my favorite movies. I had no idea what Terry Gilliam went through to get it released in the US! Also, I agree that The Brothers Grimm was no bueno.
I remember seeing his work on Monty Python-which I didn't know at the time, and LOVING his cutout animation-but for me the role that got me to look into him was his voice as the King in the Unfinished Swan-one of my favorite games, and honestly I can see a lot of parallels between that character and the story here.

Just saw the film yesterday here in Madrid, it was every bit as fantastic as I wanted it to be and it breaks my heart that there were 10 other people on the cinema
Thank you for adding more to my understanding of Terry Gilliam. I hold his movies in esteem with one caveat. There is always something "wrong" with them. I am not damming TG with faint praise. I just find there's a loose end that prevents his movies being 'great' or 'award nominated'. "The Brothers' Grimm" is a good example. There are more quality aspects to this film that are few disconnected points that it gets criticised. Gilliam's films are about the journey - enjoy the view! M
Best director in my lifetime. There are many great ones, fantastic ones, brilliant ones, and even with all those cinematic kings, Terry is my favorite one. First movie seen without knowing the director was Time Bandits. I loved it. Python came soon after that, and the rest is history. Gilliam Rules! 12 Monkeys ranks up there. Top 5... anyone? Considering the journey that has been taken the production of _The Man Who Killed Don Quixote_ is arguably a greater tale to tell than the movie itself.
There was a documentary released a bunch of years ago about Terry Gilliam's struggles to make his Don Quixote and they definitely tried to sell the angle of the creative artist frustrated by pencil-pushers and philistine financiers. But I came away thinking how badly unprepared Gilliam was for anything to go wrong. His choice for Don Quixote was Jean Rochefort, who certainly looked exactly like I've always pictured Don Quixote looking, but was about eighty years old, sick, and not able to sit on a horse. That's bad or at least very risky casting. There was some bad weather and the location chosen was overflown by noisy NATO jets. Those seem like the run-of-the-mill problems that afflict any big movie production but there was no slack built into the budget/schedule and so everything ground to a halt then and there. I like Terry Gilliam's movies and I'll be glad to see this one but I don't think of him (in this case) as so much being victimized by the money guys as being feckless and unrealistic.
I'll be honest, this was the first I had heard that Don Quixote was actually coming out, so the ending of this video essay actually brought a tear to my eye.
To be honest,"Munchausen" was the last film of his I really loved,although "Brothers Grimm" and "Parnassus" ,while not great,were not without their good points. If "Don Quixote" is released around here,I'll definitely go see it.

I'll be honest, this was the first I had heard that Don Quixote was actually coming out, so the ending of this video essay actually brought a tear to my eye.

To be honest,"Munchausen" was the last film of his I really loved,although "Brothers Grimm" and "Parnassus" ,while not great,were not without their good points. If "Don Quixote" is released around here,I'll definitely go see it.
