- TJM Wedgetail Tip - Heavy Rain Simulation.
This simulation was performed to replicate conditions that soaked one side of my air filter due to water intake via snorkel tip, after approx 10mins drive in very heavy rain @ 90-110kmh.
The flawed design results in a WET AIR FILTER when driving at speed in heavy rain conditions.
No direct stream applied to tip, so this shows ADDITIONAL water catchment over a conventional snorkel tip.
I.e :
Spray from droplets impacting windscreen
wash from Wipers
water / wiper wash from side of snorkel flowing directly into tip.
This simulation shows the flawed design of the wedgetail tip being positioned at the end of the wiper travel, which results in bulk water being thrown directly into the intake.
All water hitting the inner side of the snorkel also flows directly into the intake.
Note that all water & spray seen in this video is from screen spray and wiper throw only, to show the additional water taken in from the screen vs a conventional snorkel tip, which only takes in rain direct droplets.
Equipment used.
Residential hose tap on low pressure spray setting. (Similar to heavy rain)
AEG blower at 50% (simulated at ~90-110kmh for road speed)
Hose and blower applied from 2m in front of vehicle.

The conclusion for the test was the same for pouring rain - a wet air filter due to a ridiculous intake design.
A video of opening the box and wet filter would have been good. All I see is water splashing up.

My main aim for this was to demonstrate the flawed design of the wedgetail tip, as it’s position exposes it to bulk water and spray off the screen, whereas a conventional tip is really only exposed to direct rain.
I figured this footage was so damning that the result would be obvious.
@@DizzConnected Iv got a few mates running these snorkel on there 200 series landscruiser and they all said they haven’t had a issue. Would be interesting to find out the reason why though.
Trust me it pours water in and ruins your air filter I have ruined two in 5000 J with just heavy rain
Can you suggest the best snorkel for Prado then?
I'm not familiar with the Prado air boxes, but Safari has never disappointed me.
If you choose TJM, just make sure you don't get the wedgetail tip.
They are junk.

Yep it's happening to mine as well just noticed it last week coming back from VHC with a heavy down poor. What a shit design l wish l knew ( installed about 6months ago on a prado 2021 ) a mate got the same issue prado 2018
This is inconclusive...the vehicle is not moving....and where is the wet air filter?
My drenched air filter came from driving through a downpour. The whole upstream face was soaked.
This short video just demonstrates the moronic design of having an air intake sitting at the end of the wiper throw and on the air stream of spray coming off the windscreen.

Can you not see the bulk water being swept into the intake ?
I didn’t want to ruin another filter.
And the vehicle doesn’t need to be moving if the air blowing from the front is traveling at ~90kmh.
Heard of wind tunnel testing ???

I was told to expect a response after they’d analysed the video.
After a couple of prompts, I gave up and made the video public so others could decide for themselves.
The whole experience with TJM was woeful. Main intake hose clamp (jubilee clip) was left completely loose, Shabby silicone work falling out of the junctions.
Never again.
What happens when the snorkel is on the other side
I think the Y62 option is on the other side (and probably others) so will not get the wiper wash. Splash spray from the screen will be the same though.
Interesting video. In the US, windshield wipers move in the opposite direction, so it doesn’t produce this effect
All intakes are on different sides 😂🤦♂️

Per the description, this ridiculous design puts the air intake at the end of the wiper sweep, so in heavy rain the wipers deliver bulk water directly into the intake.
In addition, it also sucks a lot of fine mist and rain droplet splash from the screen surface.
The result is a wet air filter.
