Definitely not a ninja. He was and still is my favorite GI Joe action figure and was in 99% of all missions until I got out of GI Joe. But he was always a saboteur, stealthy and a never a ninja. That made him so much more versatile. And for me the all over gray camo was the coolest

I always liked the Firefly action figure.I had preordered him and Stormshadow at K-Mart in 84.When I went to pick them up I was told someone screwed up and put mine out for sale.When I ran to the aisle Firefly was still there,but Stormshadow was gone.It took me til about 3 years ago to finally own a vintage Stormshadow,but I do still have that original Firefly with his acccessories.
Firefly was definitely part of probably the best wave of the series in terms of amazing accessories, "plausible" designs and roles for the various figures, and memorable personalities that stand out in comparison to later years that struggled to present characters who were "really" essential to help either side.
Firefly has always been one of my favorite characters! I didn't really have much to do with G.I. Joe in the 90s though. I was aware of what was going on and just shook my head. As for your comment about the cobra emblem on his sleeve. Yes, he looks like a bad guy. But then again so does Snake-Eyes. When I first got Snake-Eyes as a kid, I honestly though he was a member of Cobra. This was before the comic book series or cartoon came out. So, maybe the emblem does help establish who's side he's on.
Never owned the '84 toy, but I enjoyed Firefly thanks to my friend who would lend me his toys. Firefly made a big impression on me as a kid. Great job, as always.
I'm going to second a MAT-49 with a custom flash suppressor. His historical background is growing up on a French Indochina plantation right before Dien Bien Phu and the MAT-49 was a common arm for French in that conflict that he'd be familiar with. As a saboteur he wasn't looking for an A-grade weapon, just a little 9mm discouragement, because if he was doing his job you wouldn't even know he's on site.
I love Firefly. Vintage, 90s, or any of the "modern" ones. I love them all. He was always THE bastard Cobra went to when they wanted to get dirty and nasty. I have the 25th in the gunner position of my Cobra Rattler, while the 50th Anniversary (the best update to the character in that scale other than the Retaliation that started the mold which came in a three-pack) stands proudly with Ultimate Storm Shadow on the two vintage Cobra Ferrets I own. All the while Version 2 with his neon green glory is next to his Classified one I got.
I can't remember who printed them but their is a series of character profiles books of cobra and gi Joe personnel and in the profile of firefly it CLEARLY states he was trained by, and is a member of Koga ryu ninjutsu.
The coolest features of joes like this is the mini accessories like the back packs that open up to reveal stuff the classified destro reminds me of that with his briefcase that opens up

I got Classified Firefly for Christmas this past year, my dad took the kind of box you'd put a suit in, stole one of the shirts from my closet, then wrapped the figure in the shirt, and stuffed it in the box! Firefly's part of the Cobra Island series like Major Bludd, so the chances having those Target-exclusives were zilch until then.
Great review of my all time without a doubt my favorite figure since first getting him in 1985! Always special as in the few early photos that had me playing with some of my Joes back then he was always an important part of the Cobr lineup and was an early full-card we saved. I have also bought an original painting based on the original card art a fan made and sold. There have been some nice later re-issues with additional paint apps but the original is simply the best. Also "When we get out of the 80's the 90's will make the 60's look like the 50's"-Dennis Hopper in the 1989 movie Flashback.
You are so much happier reviewing 80’s figures and things you like. The 90’s figures were eco warriors luminous nonsense. Those reviews did nothing for you nor I or I guess most of the audience. Firefly was always my favorite and still is #1. I loved his colors and awesome accessories. especially the detonator/cell phone. I would use it as a phone before cell phones. hahaha Thanks for this review Commander!!!

Firefly shows up several times in the Palitoy Action Force comics and into Marvel UKs GI Joe. In Operation Australia and Operation Stubborn he kills Cobra and local allies because he thinks he doesn't need their help!
Oh, and he's so sneaky in his first appearance, Storm Shadow is unable to detect or stop him from infiltrating Cobra HQ! So him being a ninja...he's a better ninja than Storm Shadow?
The ' ' Hall Of Heroes ' ' Firefly looks darker & therefor more similar to the vintage O-ring version of this mercenary saboteur. I definitely think it looks great and comes with an abundance of appropriate accessories. Highly recommended ! Check it out ! !
Re-reading Larry Hama's Marvel run over the past few months, I came to the realization that others have commented. Firefly the Boba Fett of G.I Joe: looks amazing and has a lethal reputation (thanks to the file card), but doesn't ultimately do much of anything and then gets a drastic change in character. He's still cool though and v1 is easily a top 10 figure of the entire ARAH set. EDIT: I'm fairly certain. Firefly is Frenchman born in Vietnam. According to Marvel #126. His father was a plantation owner in French Indo-China, i.e. Vietnam, and there's no indication that FF wasn't also born there.
Nice work. I think "Lightning Bug" would be a better codename. He looked cool but the name was not for me. Also there is no way that walkie talkie would have lasted 2 weeks with me but very cool in combination with the backpack and removeable panel.
So weird that he was actually discontinued in the late 80s, I mean he was one of my, and all of my friends favorite figures (the og grey version, not the awful 90s ninja) him, beachhead and snake eyes. Did no one else like him or did Hasbro just suck as much then as they do today?
Umm Firefly?...one of the best Cobras and arrived in 84 one of the best years of GI JOE I think Firefly II from 92 was cool as well..thank God he wasn't released as part of Ninja Force..What he should've been released with is a recoloured version for Python Patrol...great and menacing character.
I always wondered what the hell some of the characters were doing in the damn Cobra Freighter before being blown up by Combra Commander. CC has thrown some random guys inside, at the same time trapping Minh and Tyrone there. And there was no reason for Raptor to be there (except for him sucking and making no sense). Hamma is a great author but I also didn't like how Billy seemingly did not give a damn about some of the people who died in the fireghter.
I prefer the original 84 version gray camo very appropriate colors for an infiltration and seven tour person. That garish bright green and just wasn't appropriate.

I think he was used better in the DDP series and I remember one comic where someone derisively asks him if he’s still a ninja.

Making Firefly a ninja later on was a cop out move in a failed attempt to rebrand the character when there was nothing wrong with the original.
