Geoff doesn't even consider himself a bass. He thinks of himself as a baritone with access to bass notes. He says he feels most comfortable singing in baritone.
@@Katriinka lol I think he is definitely a bass. He might be more comfortable in baritone, but even being able to access those lower bass notes is something special. I wish I could do it.
@@KurNorock As I understand it, coming from a musical family, your range depends on how relaxed or tight your vocal cords are. Vocal cords never get any tighter, and trying to sing higher than your range can severely damage them. However, one can learn to relax their vocal cords to safely notes in a range lower than their natural one - which is likely how Goeff has been expanding his range over time to be able to sing in bass, even though he started and continues to consider himself a natural baritone. (Someone can feel free to correct me if I explained that poorly.)
He can say that all he wants, his natural speaking voice is below an average bass -- that's a good determination of a person's actual voice timbre. When he talks, his natural voice hovers around C2 to A1, which is quite low for even a bass singer. Most bass singers talk around an F2 and can sing several semitones below it.
Did not expect him to go lower... oh please this is Geoff that is what he does! Loved the song loved your reaction, you mentioned his vocal color. I'd never heard that phrase before but I understand what you mean, yes his vocal color stays constant regardless of how high or low he is singing. Thank you again keep up the good work.
thank you, term vocal color is used in my language, sometimes I forget to exchange it for timbre or tone quality, especially when I am focused on something else haha :)

@@steveg5933 Yes, and what a magnificent performance that was! I used to pretend to be Thurl singing the Grinch song over and over as a kid back in the 60s and 70s.
I appreciate the comment about bass singers having to fight to maintain stability. I'm a new bass singer (after years of thinking "I can't sing high like on the radio so I'm a bad singer", I finally had my eyes opened by people like Geoff, Avi Kaplan of Pentatonix, and Tim Faust of Home Free), and I felt discouraged at times and felt like I wasn't a bass b/c I felt exactly how you said it: like I was fighting for stability in my voice. But knowing that this is just a thing that bass singers deal with (like how singers in all ranges have various struggles associated to their range) make me feel better, like "I'm not an imposter, I'm just walking the same path as those before me". So thank you for that, and for another wonderful video!
It makes me smile every time you say 'developed' as 'devil-upped' instead of 'deh-vel-ep'd' like most english speakers. Please never change that quirk, it's adorable.
I've been waiting to see your reaction to this from the moment I saw him post it. I knew you'd have fun! You definitely should check out the older version. Geoff gives credit to Thurl Ravenscroft, who is an absolute legend and did many amazing songs for children's shows and cartoons. Thurl was also the man that made me decide I wanted to learn to sing. Give it a listen, Geoff did an amazing job and was very, very close to the original.
It's really amazing that he is Geoff is all four people in this video -- his high-singing trio is perfect too! Took a moment to realize he was doing all the singing in this video too!
This song was originally performed by Thurl Ravenscroft - a noted bass singer from the 1920s - 90s. He was a noted Disney bass voice and the original voice of Tony the Tiger. Geoff Castellucci says Ravenscroft was a huge influence on him. It’s mostly an homage to him.
This was sung by Bing Crosby in Disney's 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' and also covered by Thurl Ravenscroft which this version is sort of an homage to. Another one you might want to listen to of Geoff's is his cover of 'Blackbird'. That pretty well covers his entire range.
Thurl was the man. Who doesn't love Tony the Tiger? All the things he did for Disney as well. Incredible talent. Geoff is the first one I've come across who captures Thurl's sound and presence this well.

This song came from The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad a Disney retelling of the Headless Horseman that came out in 1949 fist sung by Bing Crosby and every year at Halloween I'd watch this on the Wonderful World of Disney.
Great job with your reaction and analysis of Geoff Castellucci and his song the headless horseman. Katriiika if you were graving a pumpkin on your livestream you should post a picture of it on your Twiiter Account would like to see how it came out.

I would love to see you react to some Scardust! Their songs 'Tantibus' and 'Tantibus II' are about a demon that visits you when you sleep, very halloween appropriate :)
I can naturally drop to a D2 in chest voice and I have had no training. I suspect if I were to have vocal training, I could probably learn subharmonics, which means I could put out a D1. Geoff still blows me away, in particular because he can go WAY higher than I can with his mix voice.
