Thank you for mentioning Z Channel! G4's return should have been online only utilizing TH-cam, Twitch and other platforms or gone to streaming platform. By the time they came back...TV was in the ground. It wasn't gonna survive even if that rant didn't happen. Should've imo had their shows streaming live and getting people all over the gaming world to kinda produce things they were already doing but with bigger budget on their platform. Could've gotten TH-cam giants like Markiplier, Jack, Pewdiepie, Matpat and more to essentially show up or even do shows on the channel or stream it. Get up and comers or people who are smaller but doing stuff for a long time to also participate. It upsets me how G4's return could have easily still be ongoing and fun if they didn't put it only back on TV. Or if it was gonna be on TV, be just a few hour block on an appropriate channel. The thing is that I agree with Frosk’s criticism, but it might have been the right place or time. While people like to blame her for G4’s demise, the channel doomed due to the fact I don’t think it was very many cable or satellite systems.
If you follow up this Discontinued Channels video with a third video, you should cover Audience Network. It was a channel specific only towards DirectTV subscribers that ceased operations in early 2020. It was known most for its show “Undeniable with Dan Patrick”-where Dan would interview prominent athletes. As well as the docuseries “Religion of Sports”.
One thing you forgot to mention. Back in last year, Disney XD along with other Disney owned channels like Disney Junior, FXX, and Nat Geo Wild were removed from all Spectrum TV packages.
Thank you for bringing up Toon Disney and Jetix! Speaking of, did you know Jetix was a fully standalone channel and a successor to Fox Kids in most other places of the world?
I never knew Jetix was a standalone channel.. since I always heard that name from FOX Kids on Saturday's. I was only aware of Toon Disney (when Disney channel was crap - because so many good cartoons went to Toon Disney) and then Disney XD.
Toon Disney, Disney XD, Noggin, The N and G4 were all huge parts of my childhood and I miss them. I didn’t watch G4 during their relaunch aside from clips and I still think the brand itself deserves to keep going in some form. And the way it was mismanaged is just so heartbreaking😢
@@AmusingLuis That makes sense. There wasn't really much different history in terms of the Canadian version anyway, with the only big difference being that Rogers Communications owned the Canadian G4, and it took the slot for the former biography channel. Other than that, it was kinda similar, and I think it lasted a bit longer too.
@@ultraflamz64 Most likely because adult swim wasn't in Canada prior to 2012, which was when Cartoon Network launched in Canada, and as a result, so did Adult Swim. So chances were that G4 Canada had the rights to those shows to serve as the "defacto" Adult Swim
The channels mentioned here that I remember are Toon Disney/Jetix, PBS Kids Sprout, Noggin, and G4. These videos are really enjoyable. Can’t wait to see more.
This was a great video to watch! It really was disappointing how G4 TV was that one channel that premiered successfully, then discontinued, then brought back again, then discontinued a second time. I really enjoyed both these Defunct TV channels videos. Keep up the great work!
Surprised to see Z Channel here, but I'm glad you mentioned it. I saw the same documentary as you, and it struck me as being if Criterion was run by one guy, who unfortunately wasn't the healthiest. It's a good example of the curiosities of early cable before it became so homogenous.
This cleared up some details on some OLD memories of mine. I saw a Nickelodeon history video (not the one you’re thinking of) a while back and when they mentioned noggin, and I thought “That sounds familiar, wasn’t that the name of a show I used to watch when I was like three?” But since I was thinking of a show, I assumed that it was separate from the channel. What I now know is that the “show” I was thinking of was just the Moose and Zee bumpers, and that 16 years passing just kinda messed up how I remember stuff from when I was three.
Another great entry in this series! Enjoyed this, especially Z Channel and Tech TV. Great job by lulaloopsey on Sprout and Noggin as well. I'd watch a part 3!
the moment luis mentioned that yin yang yo is his favorite jetix show, i destined myself to watch the rest of the video because of it seriously though, good job man!
Toon Disney/Jetix turning into Disney XD shocked me when I was a kid. I didn’t see it coming 😭.Overall, this is a great video, and I’m very glad TH-cam recommended your channel.
The G4 story reminded me of Animax in the Latin American feed. It started as a 24-hour Anime channel, but in late 2008 (recession) Sony put a new manager and changed the programming to only American TV shows. The otakus and anime fans sent many death threats to her on social media.
26:14 to add to this comment, another early example of mocap can be found in 1993: moxy from cartoon network's "the moxy show" started out as the host of "the great international toon-in," a marathon of animated shorts simulcast on TBS (US), TNT (US & latin america), and cartoon network (US, latam, & europe). the bumpers from this marathon looked laggy because the mocap was being done in real time, but regardless definitely one hell of an advancement.
I'd like to see you cover AZN Television in the next video if possible. It was originally named The International Channel and had programs from Fuji TV, TV Tokyo, MBC, ABS-CBN, The Filipino Channel, and among others. As far as I remember, I recall The International Channel airing programs like Game KNB, Philippines Tonight, Journal de France, MBC Best Theater, Pop Japan TV, Dragon Ball Z (uncut), Dragon Ball GT (uncut), The Slayers, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Tenchi Universe, MoonPhase and The Record of Lodoss War. They changed their name to AZN Television by 2006 and dropped anything that isn't from an Asian country hence its name. The network was shut down in 2008, unfortunately. AZN Television introduced me to Dragon Ball GT and a bunch of animated programs most other people never heard of at the time.
You might consider a story about the short lived Qube, an experimental two-way, multi-programmed cable television system ('77 - '84). Got fond memories about this service.
IMO, the original G4 run was like one 24-hour long Mountain Dew commercial, with constant pandering, only to turn into "Spike TV Jr.". Then I felt like the second run of G4 was destine for failure, since much like gaming magazines, there were plenty of other sites to get video game news and reviews, It stopped being "appointed" viewing. That, and I personally held a grudge, since TechTV debuted on the local cable system when they expanded to "digital cable". And while TechTV was on the "why are you spending this much money on cable" tier of channels, it was still a fun channel to watch, and the merger that killed TechTV, only made me hate G4 that much more.
Oh Naruto Shippuden on DXD is a prime example of being gifted to you for your fledgling channel and being so mishandled by the higher ups who didn't watch more than 5 episodes. Great Episode.
@@AmusingLuis Shippuden by miles. Kai's edits were on the level of Toonami's edits, give or take some missing blood. Shippuden's edits were just bizarre. Some stuff was ok, some was not and it was all on a per episode basis. It was like watching someone's recollection of the show, you hit the main plot points but because you haven't seen the show itself, you have no idea on how you got there.
Man, I remember watching the original AOTS finale and I was floored when they did the whole "Leo dreamed all of G4" ending. It's like, by that point G4 had drifted so far from what it and TechTV original stood for that there probably wasn't that many people who stuck through it all. I mean, hell, I think I might have even tried some of the programs that were recommended on the Damn Good Download segment of The Screen Savers! I don't think there's anyway G4 or TechTV could exist in today's world, especially since a lot of what those networks covered are now handled by individual TH-camrs or larger channels that, while they may be worth millions, still don't have the deep pockets that cable networks have, but still manage to have just enough to pay for their sets, staff, etc. And on top of that, they do it because they want to, not because they're wanting to make a ton of money. They're not soulless corporations, they're real people. They've replaced G4 and TechTV by being honest and naturally growing.
I think the n was supposed to be part of msn. Msn stands for microsoftnetwork. Atleast I think it does? So it would actually be microsoftnetworkbroadcastingcompany
G4's return was so depressing. It really felt like reality punched us in the face as a way of telling us that the og G4 2as forever dead, and better offf that eay, and to stop hoping that things like Blockbuster and Jetix would make a comeback and let them be the dead things they are. I personally just wanted X-Play back and even that, OBVIOUSLY, backfired in my face. Such a shame
i remember these channels especially PBS Kids Sprout since they aired Thomas i for one would like to see a Discontinued Nostalgia on Fox Family Channel as that was the channel i grew up on since it had Thomas the Tank Engine for a while i even still have my VHS tapes of Fox Family
Sprout used to be my go to channel for kids shows that were popular in the UK. I’m grateful that I grew up with some of the shows on there like Noddy, Fireman Sam (Series 5 stop motion version, not the cgi series) or Pingu.
I remember El Rey Network as well ! Remember when they used to show the older Gojira films , Xena (I think) & those amazing martial arts flicks ? Sugoi !
Univision has tried so hard to cater to the spanglish community and has failed multiple times i guess they rather see spanish tv or anglo but not the two together who would have guessed.
I hate to be the person that corrects. But in the "Sprout" segment, it was mentioned that HiT was sold to NBCUniversal. But that is somewhat incorrect. What actually happened is that when HiT was being sold to Mattel in 2012 (they only wanted Thomas), the sale didn't include their share of Sprout. So their share was sold to NBCU.
You should totally talk about Smile of a Child, which got rebranded as Smile TV. It's main focus was a christan kids channel, and it aired shows like Veggie Tales and some car show. It got combined with Juce TV, before dying in 2017.
The return of G4 was a hit topic for me and my friends were all hanging out watching G4 (like old times with Pizza and beer etc.), when Frost went ape sh*t. The entire house went silent. It was like a bad movie moment when the villain that everybody thought was a great guy just revealed themselves unintentionally while on the air. You could hear a pin drop. Granted we voiced complaints about her, and they had nothing to do with her looks, it was the fact that she showed very little interest in the channels subject matter and would get vocal if anybody tried to correct her on any misinformation she'd give or constantly changing her story for whatever reason (it's the script writers fault, etc.). G4 tried to back pedal by saying it was a joke (which Frost never admitted to if that was the case), but you could see the discomfort this gave her co-hosts (they weren't in on this joke if that's what it was). The audience gave her what she wanted... we left.
Luis and Lulaloopsey collab? On my Saturday? Lets go! also, wow, that G4 segment was handled very well considering its the most taxing to make research on while the whole Frosk situation making Gamergate shtick returned on TH-cam, which soured more G4 researching content. Reviving a dedicated channel is rough. Also a morbid idea I have is imagine if they get Midnight Spank returning and they just aired Helluva Boss and Eddsworld. It would be tough to actually manage how insane the censorship would be if these both or any web-series aired on the channel but they manage to not censored Scott the Woz swearing.
Oh I remember watching lot of Noggin. My daughter who was born in 2001 would loved watching lot of the shows, before she switch over to the time when the Disney Channel was aimed at teen girls.
Man I missed Jetix and Toon Disney!!! I used to watch Jetix every day along with Toon Disney! Everyday they showed Disney Cartoons and Power Rangers! I loved Power Rangers in Disney Era!!
As a kid that grew up watching the tech tv into G4 action, its really unfortunate they weren't able to bring it back. I would love taking with my friends about what was going on with the shows. Literally running home from school to watch X-Play review Kingdom Hearts 2 and get some advice from Cheat
25:10 ah Good ol’ TechTV. I remember The Screen Savers with Leo Laporte being on all the time (or whenever I had access to the DirectTV box at my grandparents house) too bad I was a little young to fully appreciate TechTV when I was 11 to 14 years old. I remember in 2004 when it became G4 TechTV and I was like “huh what’s this G4 stuff?”
I recall watching the commercial during the Super Bowl for a 3D episode of the show Chuck, with old fashion 3D glasses. I was nauseated after that. I can't imagine how people actually watched the show next night. It's one thing when the 3D is nice and flat in a comic book, it's another when it's moving.
There really was no direction with G4 besides trying to cash in on nostalgia, I actually enjoyed the new AOTS but beyond that the network really didn't have much to offer. They had a good idea syndicating TH-cam channels like Scott but didn't do anything with it beyond him. Maybe they should have looked into eSports broadcasting
Funny thing, G4's ultimate mission was *supposed to be* covering eSports, but never getting there. Doesn't help that the gaming industry was beginning to underwhelm during this time, after frequently aiming for a spiteful audience or overthrowing "casual habit" games.
The Z Channel documentary is great. Ironically (I guess that's the use of the word), I discovered it when I bought a DVD of it when the local Hollywood video was closing, and they were practically giving away DVDs (like 10 for $10). Who knows what happened to most of those DVDs, probably rotting away, buried in a box in the garage (but I still have the Z Channel documentary on a shelf next to the TV).
Here in Brazil Jetix was a separate channel, we didn't have Toon Disney and it became Disney XD in 2009, but the weirdest thing was that both Jetix and Disney XD aired Fairly Odd Parents for years here, only in like 2013 that it got to Nick, so for years I thought Fairly was a Disney show
With Leo's contract dispute, he started his new venture at the time as a podcaster in 2005, from there it is all history, and today TwIT is still around with a variety of shows.
Hey! I have two suggestions for the next one The Hub Network (Known for shows about toys, and dan vs lol) and UPN (known for everybody hates chris, dilbert and home movies. Their shows were moved to the cw and home movies and dilbert on adult swim)
Plus with 3D TV it was usually recommended to buy four sets of glasses at $125 a pop, but of course if you had more than four people you were SOL unless you bought more.
At 35:20, Xavier should’ve said: “Don’t you DARE BE SOUR. Clap your hands and FEEL the Power. It’s a New Day. Yes it is.” Yeah, i know Big E said that in the New Day intro but come on.
For clarity with the Z Channel guy: he didn't "know which movies were great and which movies were shit" because that's a subjective matter. He knew which movies he liked and which he didn't, that's it. There's no special knowledge any critic has that lets them objectively know which media is great and which isn't and everyone else's opinions are just as important and valid as those of critics.
Really miss the good old days of g4. Use to love coming home after school to watch xplay, cheat, judgment day...etc. Definitely remember those sat nights watching cinematech nocturnal emissions and discovering a whole bunch of weird Japanese games for the first.

I never knew Jetix was a standalone channel.. since I always heard that name from FOX Kids on Saturday's. I was only aware of Toon Disney (when Disney channel was crap - because so many good cartoons went to Toon Disney) and then Disney XD.
19:28 SelecTV is the exact name used for a channel on satellite and such which later became Carlton Select.
I remember SelecTV it was one of my favorites as a kid.
39:20 Just so you know, G4 also launched in Canada too, but that goes even deeper. Good thing you stopped when you did. Great video though, Luis!
that is true, i probably should've named dropped it as well as Techtv having international channels. but I simply wanted to cover the core G4 channel
@@mapletouqe Yep G4 Canada lasted all the way 2017!
Interestingly enough, G4 Canada used to air Adult Swim shows like Aqua teen, Metalocalypse, SuperJail, and The Venture bros
A common theme with most of these channels is the lack of advertisers
ive been addicted to the first part and im soooo happy this is out :) thank you so much!!!!!
The very idea of "2000s nostalgia" makes me feel very, *very* old.
As a youngish Millennial 2000-2005 is VERY nostalgic (to me) especially.
Ahhh two of my favorites teaming up!! I love that TH-camrs are still doing collabs 👏🏻
Glad you enjoyed it!
Another great entry in this series! Enjoyed this, especially Z Channel and Tech TV. Great job by lulaloopsey on Sprout and Noggin as well. I'd watch a part 3!
the moment luis mentioned that yin yang yo is his favorite jetix show, i destined myself to watch the rest of the video because of it
seriously though, good job man!
Ty Luis and ty for mentioning G4. Great job and you both did a wonderful job today. I hope you’ll bring up The WB and Kids’ WB! in a future video.
Toon Disney was basically Disney's answer to Cartoon Network
And while TechTV was on the "why are you spending this much money on cable" tier of channels, it was still a fun channel to watch, and the merger that killed TechTV, only made me hate G4 that much more.
the collab video is a good thing
Oh hell yeah I've been waiting for this for a while (well not really but I am pretty hyped to see this regardless)
Oh Naruto Shippuden on DXD is a prime example of being gifted to you for your fledgling channel and being so mishandled by the higher ups who didn't watch more than 5 episodes.
Great Episode.
whats worse?
DBZ Kai on Nicktoons or Naruto Shippuden on DXD
@@AmusingLuis Shippuden by miles. Kai's edits were on the level of Toonami's edits, give or take some missing blood. Shippuden's edits were just bizarre. Some stuff was ok, some was not and it was all on a per episode basis. It was like watching someone's recollection of the show, you hit the main plot points but because you haven't seen the show itself, you have no idea on how you got there.
The crossover I never knew I needed!
Fun fact: Jetix/Disney XD had their own monster truck in Monster Jam, idk why they had a truck, I just know it
So you’re telling me?
MSNBC Stands for MicroSoftNationalBroadcastingConpany?
I had no idea myself. I thought it was something completely different. Now it makes sense to how shit and at one point media focused they were
Honestly this is one of the things I stayed for coming to this video. TIL moment there.
Such a shame
i remember these channels especially PBS Kids Sprout since they aired Thomas
i for one would like to see a Discontinued Nostalgia on Fox Family Channel as that was the channel i grew up on since it had Thomas the Tank Engine for a while i even still have my VHS tapes of Fox Family
He should really do discontinued children's toys or something along those lines.
thats a future episode being worked~
RIP Toon Disney. I wish they’d bring house of Mouse to Disney+.
Sprout used to be my go to channel for kids shows that were popular in the UK. I’m grateful that I grew up with some of the shows on there like Noddy, Fireman Sam (Series 5 stop motion version, not the cgi series) or Pingu.
You really gotta cover El Rey Network, it was an amazing channel
i remember El Rey primarily for Lucha Underground haha
I remember El Rey Network as well ! Remember when they used to show the older Gojira films , Xena (I think) & those amazing martial arts flicks ? Sugoi !
Lucha Underground was my shit. I was so pissed when DirecTV took it off the air
@@duncanwelker7450 Lucha Underground Introduced the new Pro Wrestling Concept of Cinematic Wrestling Before The Hardy's (Matt And Jeff) Made it Famous
Also that it aired Joy Junction, a show which later had a puppeteer sent to prison for very "unChristian" things
@@matcha6710 I remember that

The audience gave her what she wanted... we left.
yeah. it was hard to watch compilations of her making mistakes on the most basic things....
I loved this video can’t wait for more
Luis and Lulaloopsey collab? On my Saturday? Lets go!
also, wow, that G4 segment was handled very well considering its the most taxing to make research on while the whole Frosk situation making Gamergate shtick returned on TH-cam, which soured more G4 researching content. Reviving a dedicated channel is rough. Also a morbid idea I have is imagine if they get Midnight Spank returning and they just aired Helluva Boss and Eddsworld. It would be tough to actually manage how insane the censorship would be if these both or any web-series aired on the channel but they manage to not censored Scott the Woz swearing.
18:14 they really wanted to make Paramount plus popular
Oh I remember watching lot of Noggin. My daughter who was born in 2001 would loved watching lot of the shows, before she switch over to the time when the Disney Channel was aimed at teen girls.
So, G4 was Spike TV but for gamers?
yep!
In part 3 talk about vh1 classic
@@darkspyofficial This. I watched that channel back in the day.
I loved G4 in my High School, College, and post-College years. Good times.
" the noodle and doodle had there own bus that had kids ride on it and do crafts" *literally explodes on a bridge* that moment had me dying
Yes! You did a Jetix retrospective! Thank you!!
G4 being the longest one just says how much lore the channel has.
5:30 The Jetix idents used are from Jungarian commercial briadcaster TV2's Jetix block (circa 2005-2006)
Here in South Africa, Disney XD did shut down back in late 2020 I think including Fox, so yeah we got the bad ending
Both G4 and TechTV were my jam back in the day. Nice "G4 was a dream all along" tag.
G4 pre-merger was peak TV, but now you can find thousands of channels on this platform doing the same type of content just as well.
I remember sprout! I used to watch it UNTILL it rebranded to universal kids and then I watched American ninja warrior junior on it
G4’s death was so sad bro
Great video!
For the 15th anniversary of Disney XD I saw the first episode that the channel aired. I ironically saw it on the Disney XD TH-cam channel
The Z Channel documentary is great. Ironically (I guess that's the use of the word), I discovered it when I bought a DVD of it when the local Hollywood video was closing, and they were practically giving away DVDs (like 10 for $10). Who knows what happened to most of those DVDs, probably rotting away, buried in a box in the garage (but I still have the Z Channel documentary on a shelf next to the TV).
wake up, amusingluis uploaded the vidoe!!!
6:50 I loved this channel back in the day. Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go! & Yin Yang Yo! were so good.
If the AVGN talked about the complete history of G4, he would say: “It blows my mind. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?”
Here in Brazil Jetix was a separate channel, we didn't have Toon Disney and it became Disney XD in 2009, but the weirdest thing was that both Jetix and Disney XD aired Fairly Odd Parents for years here, only in like 2013 that it got to Nick, so for years I thought Fairly was a Disney show
Love to see more defunt tv channels
Oh, boy! I hope another certain part two comes out soon!
With Leo's contract dispute, he started his new venture at the time as a podcaster in 2005, from there it is all history, and today TwIT is still around with a variety of shows.
Don’t say unalive when talking about something serious. Just say he took her life.
Hey! I have two suggestions for the next one
The Hub Network (Known for shows about toys, and dan vs lol)
and UPN (known for everybody hates chris, dilbert and home movies. Their shows were moved to the cw and home movies and dilbert on adult swim)
I remember PBS kids sprout
Me , too . Sprout was a channel that really brings families together, huh ?
@@shawanacarpenter3032 yeah I did remember
