  • Would you like to live in a villa on an island off the coast of Naples? Who wouldn’t, right? Well, if that island is Gaiola Island, it’s buyer beware.
The stories of Gaiola (and I know I’m probably butchering that pronunciation) date back to Roman times. A temple to Venus was built there, and legend has it that the famous poet Virgil spent time on the island.
The island’s curse begins to stretch its icy fingers into the hearts of those who dare live there in the early 1900s. A Swiss businessman named Hans Braun bought the island, living there with his wife. One day, he was found murdered, his body wrapped in a rug. His wife also died under mysterious circumstances, found drowned in the sea.
Next to take control of Gaiola was Otto Grunback, but unfortunately he was struck down by a heart attack not long after arriving on the island. Other owners included the head of Fiat whose son and nephew both died tragically young. The American industrialist J. Paul Getty also owned the island for a time. You only need to Google the Getty family to see the history of tragedy there, from suicides to kidnappings.
A writer took over the island before going insane and ending up in a mental institution where he took his own life. The final private owner of Gaiola ended up in prison after his company failed, and his wife was killed in a car accident.
So, coincidences? Seems like a lot of them. If there is a curse, no one’s really sure what’s behind it. Was there some atrocity committed on the island that’s been lost to time? Do angry spirits lay in wait for those foolish enough to tempt fate? Do you have another theory?
The island eventually came under government control and marine reserve was established. People still make the trip to Gaiola to see what the island is all about, but they are only visitors and, as far as we know, they seem to make it out okay. It seems that the island’s curse is only for those who seek to own the land.
So, if you had the chance to buy Gaiola Island on the cheap, would you do it?
