  • How to clean the 72 pin connector and cartridge contacts to prevent needing to replace the 72 pin connector. The process takes about 10 minutes and can potentially save $10.
The repair process is just cleaning the 72 pin connector contacts with 70% rubbing alcohol and some cotton swabs. I use Q-tips because they are made of cardboard and cotton. Do not use swabs that are made with polyester as they are more abrasive than cotton and can do damage.

Thanks for this great video! I was about to replace the 72-pin connector however when I opened my NES I thought it looked completely fine, no visible bending to the connectors whatsoever, so I tried your method and now my NES works perfectly again!
I read so many different things about what should work the best that I got kinda confused by it all, but at least I can say now that your method works!

If you want to get a more thorough clean rather than possibly getting cardboard debris in the pin connector, there are cleaning cartridges for the Nes and other cart systems that you can apply alcohol to and then insert in and out of the system as if it were a game cart and clean it between.

For anyone wondering: After 5 years this still works perfectly! Do not be afraid when you put your game in and hear a noise that resembles scraping. This noise freaked me out as I thought I messed up but it’s perfectly normal. Also, if you have trouble putting the 72 pin connector back in place don’t give up. It is very hard to put in and it will not break the motherboard no matter how hard you push. It will also make a scrapping sound when putting it on so don’t be worried. Lastly save yourself the time and make sure your game works. To do this shake the cartridge while it’s in the thing and constantly reset it every time you move it. It should work even if t

aside from rubbing alcohol, also use brasso if you're familiar with it, not only does it clean up all the dirt on the contacts, it gives it that shine and brings it back to life just a bit longer :) be sure to use a q-tip when doing it

This worked, but I imagine it will need clean periodically. Something with a long enough reach and cardboard that fits the socket at the end would make a great tool for quickly cleaning the pins.

Have to be honest, it's best to just replace the connector. The main reason no boot, flashing power light, blue screen is the pins are bent over time.

Not really. The China replacement connectors have the wrong tolerances. Their connectors are to tight. You can hardly get the cartridge back out.
