    Professor Kelly, I have watched many of your videos and have always been impressed with your deliberate and sequenced instructions. And this is the first video that showed you in a wheelchair. You have demonstrated that a disability does not make you disabled. My father had MS for over 40 years and worked for years as a Mechanical Engineer. You are a fine example of a productive member of society!

    What an asset! If anybody ever deserved an honorary Doctorate, Professor Kelly should be at the top of the list. World standard educator, tireless researcher, open to corrections and criticism, a role-model to treasure.

      As I’ve mentioned before, I will probably NEVER do this myself. . . but it will be great to “hold my own” in any conversation with those “experts” we always run into.
      I’d love to see a comparative video on a Tesla battery system. . . i.e., which is easier to assemble and service.

      @@dewiz9596 Tesla batteries are completely glued together in 4 modules typically so you'd have to replace an entire module rather than individual cells like this battery. Otherwise, they aren't too dissimilar. Check out Monroe Live's TH-cam channel, he's in the process of tearing down a Model Y and has recently showed the battery modules in great detail.

    Great video! Three years later and I am seeing many 2017 Bolts that have been wrecked. I am buying one at auction and breaking the pack into a 20kwh pack for my RV and a 40kwh pack for my house. For far less money and much more capacity than a Tesla PW2. Perfect step by step instructions to help me get there faster. Thanks!

    As naive as I am, anyone watching your video not knowing what your video was about (did see the beginning) tested my patience to sit through it to the end. Very absorbing. My method of disassembling anything is to start at the bottom of the page and work upwards so that assembling in just working downward process. Looking forward to seeing you assembly video and see it you will get it working! Good luck.

    I have always been fascinated by EV's and can appreciate the fine details that have been presented so expertly. What a great professor and instructor who has that elusive ability to make his subject comprehensible and generates excitement about it through his own passion for the subject which is most clearly apparent. I wish I had more profs like John D Kelly throughout my educational experiences.

    Absolutely wonderful! My favorite part of the program was the best teaching moment: the battery removal tool. When Prof. Kelly took off battery pack #5, it was off-center. He figured out how to do it correctly after doing it incorrectly at first. It was such a great teaching moment! That truly is how you learn. My second favorite part was when he took the cooling tray off of battery pack # 4 and was showing it to us. When it leaked on him, I laughed right along with him! I would have done it exactly the same way, myself. Haha! And absolutely wonderful teardown of the Bolt battery pack. Thank you so much!

    You probably won’t see this but I’d like to say a few things. I’m an Australian sitting at home not quite in the outback, but in the middle of nowhere and your video’s have just come up on my recommendations.
    I can’t stop watching them.
    You seem to inspire me.
    If you were in Australia, I would sign up for whatever you are teaching.
    I’m currently designing and building a 40 foot electric motor home. Now it’s not something I can buy off the shelf parts for so I’m designing and building as needed when money becomes available. Being self taught EV enthusiast. I would like to thank you for sharing your knowledge and please don’t stop doing it. You have just helped me to stop mulling over my cooling systems design.

    I purchased my 2021 Bolt based on your service videos, watched them all. With the battery recall happening I though it important to see this again. I am still very proud of ownership and think this to be an exceptionally well engineered automobile. Zero-scaped my property for water conservation. Giving back as much as I can.

    Prof Kelly - thanks for doing these videos on the latest technology in automobiles. I love your video pace/cadence. It’s great for all of us who are either Bolt EV owners, or those who are curious about the car and tech to see inside this massive component which provides the fuel for EVs. As seen in these videos we certainly wouldn’t be able to take one apart ourselves without significant special tools/hoists, so great that you are in a position to, and are able to show us this stuff. Seeing the engineering that goes into these devices will take away some of the fear that people have with transitioning into an electric car.

    As a 2017 Bolt owner (love the car BTW) and a DIYer who, from a young age, has always marveled at taking things apart to "see what makes them tick," I find the entire Bolt disassembly series truly captivating. I assure you, however, that I will not be taking apart my Bolt. I'm adventurous, but I know my limits!

    Great video! Exciting to see how the battery technology was implemented on the Bolt. John Kelly does an excellent job of narrating. His pacing of the dialogue is fast enough to hold my interest and slow enough that it allows me to understand the content. Other educators should take note!

    Thank you very much for this instructural video. Since 02292024 i bought a second hand Opel Ampera-e, the equivalent of the chevy and was very curious after the batteriepack. Also in Europe they changed the pack and my 05292020 car was updated to 66kWh. You ended with “i am not a strong man anymore” Well sir, on the contrary, you are a mentally giant!     BTW, even GM realized how Volt and Bolt names could be confused. So they called it "Bolt EV". Easier than saying "Bolt with a B" 🙂

    As EV engineer, I would love, however, to see less bolts undone and more info on battery modules and BMS.
    I am thinking of getting all of Bolt EV guts and installing it all in to my old Smart Roadster.

    Excellent video, as always. Interesting rumor I heard: GM pissed off LG when they announced the cells for the Bolt cost ~$145 kWh. It turns out LG Chem was charging the other manufacturers a whole lot more for the nearly the same thing. I think the economics of EVs are almost as fascinating as the technology. “Experts” have been claiming they’re a decade away from being financially viable, and I think the battery manufacturers are exploiting this idea to gouge carmakers. An executive at Tesla admitted in 2016 their pack costs are already “below” $190, and there’s speculation that the Gigafactory is pumping cells out for

      Pack cost per kwh is not the same as cel cost per kwh so that might be a source of confusion in pricing differences.

    Watching you work like this, i realised it's very easy to be schocked by the battery. Basicly only your hands are protected. It's easy to forget about the high voltage and lean against the battery with another part of your body. I saw your bare arms getting close to it a few times. So one of the biggest safety tools is the awareness of what you're doing!

      Yes and no. The voltage difference between cells is pretty low, so you can basically grab two, three, four, etc. adjacent cells without worry. But if you reach across the battery and touch opposite positive and negative terminals without protection, your family will be paying for a funeral. Everything is wired in series, so every additional cell adds ~3.65 volts. Don’t quote me on this, but I believe anything above 50 (?) volts is considered “dangerous”. EV batteries are serious business, but they’re not a danger when serviced carefully.

      Bryan Noga, when the bus bars are still connected the batteries are in series. If you touch something like a bus bar you could be in serious trouble.

      DiagnoseDan If the service plug is out, there should be no voltage at the bus bars, unless you touch another terminal at the same time, and that will vary depending on the terminal. Of course, if you’re talking about the main positive and negative terminals while the service plug is in, then it’s game over. Since this is TH-cam (the land of unnecessary flame wars), I just want to say that you’re absolutely right about the need to stay aware when working on EV batteries. I agree 100% on that. But I want to dispel the notion that these things are high voltage death machines. I hear that concern voiced to me all the time when talking about EVs. The voltage differential between cells, wires, and bus bars is quite variable, and often well below the 350.4 volt pack total. Anyway....thank you for responding to my comment!

      Bryan Noga, it's relative new for most techs. But a regular gas tank can be dangerous aswell if not handled with care.
      Just noticed all the safety procedures and than the bear arms. Seemed strange.

    I do have to mention that each time you pause for a second to make sure you are using exactly the right name for a component I expect you to say "Thing-A-Ma-Jig" or "Doo-Hickey."
    Those neatly packaged battery sections will be super popular in the aftermarket for those who build DIY EVs and powerwalls once owners get busy driving their Bolts into trees just hard enough to be "uneconomical to repair." Bolt parts are starting to show up on Ebay but no batteries yet.
    After watching your previous videos I bought a 24V hunk of Gen 1 Volt battery to use at work in our R&D department for testing, um, stuff. It's a wonderful battery. It is a better battery than I can buy retail W/O building my own from cells for many times the price.
    Thanks again. There really is no other place to get this level of detail. You provide a priceless resource.

    Thank you for this video. Excellent work as usual. I LOL’d when you dumped the upper cooling plate’s remaining contents onto yourself. We’ve all done it.
    If I may, the term you were searching for regarding a collection of cells welded together in parallel is called a cell “group”. A collection of cell groups forms a battery “module”. A collection of modules along with all the other naus is the battery pack.

    Amazing to think that you will actually be able to reassemble this all again in the future, now the little bags of parts are making sense. I love that you touch the terminals to prove it is safe. I meet so many people who are scared to touch a 12v car battery, I guess they need to watch your videos to understand what is safe and what is not. You mention you fully charged it, but that was outside the Bolt right? Mind sharing what charger/balancer/discharger you use? Also look forward to seeing more about that contactor assembly :-)

      The voltage that can affect a human depends on sensitivity and skin resistance. I am sensitive to any voltage over 35, but I knew old techs that can handle thousands of volts in old vacuum tube TV sets without even a tickle! 12 V is too low to be sensed unless the skin is wetted with a conductive liquid.
      The high voltage in EVs is enough to harm and maybe kill those that are sensitive enough. Gloves are an absolute needed tool.

    1:30:56 these pads are for isolating the heat sink from the metal battery cover so the heat sink hot and cold lines are not connected thermally together via the metal battery cover.

    Thank you for the odessey of disassembly. In retrospect, it’s hard to believe that GM might have dealer specialists do the unit removal, opening, and wiring and unit disassembly to replace a ‘faulty’ battery module as part of the Bolt battery recall AND all of the painstaking high quality reassembly. Sue hope they do battery work centrally and only battery removal, install and s/w updating at dealers or who knows how the overall quality of repair will vary!! Thank you again!!!

      Sir, were you aware that teenagers are making self charging electric go-carts. Or that Troy Reed developed a magnetic motor which requires no battery packs! I don't have $40 grand plus for a car or truck. Even if I did, I wouldn't spend it on a vehicle. GM had the Saturn car company in which they were going to put an electric motor. They didn't do it. Now where are they? The Chinese are eating them alive. And US. It's called greed, and suppressed innovations and inventions.

    I hope those bar stools are CAT III or higher LOL! Thanks for another great video, as always very well shot and professional. I helped a friend of mine last weekend, he got a battery section 4 from a Bolt, he used to work for Enginer installing plug-in hybrid kits (turns a hybrid into a plug-in hybrid) so he still has a bunch of those kits. We used this battery section to power the kit, just had to add busbars and connections to work with the kit. The kit is so simple to install, basically it just has an adjustable DC-DC converter that you can adjust how much voltage and amperage it outputs. Two wires connect it in parallel on the output side of the contactor (some vehicles it needs to go on the battery side or even further back) and thats it really, no programming to the vehicle or modifications. The DC-DC converter pushes power into the cars battery pack (while the car is running) the converter adjusts the current and voltage depending on the hybrid pack's SOC and the load. When the car sees a pack with a high SOC, it doesn't know where the extra power is coming from, but it adjusts its drive mode to use more electric power, so it drives in EV mode at lower speeds and gives more electric boost at higher speeds. The Bolt pack works great for this application, its really impressive how much more capacity their cells have compared to just a few years ago. We put it in a Ford Fusion Hybrid. We're also considering buying a wrecked Bolt and using as much as we can to convert a 1951 Chevy Van, i'll definitely make a video when we do!

    That's just plain cool. I've had a Volt for over 5 years, about to trade it in for a new Bolt EUV. I'm a mechanical geek, seeing this stuff and knowing how it works will greatly enhance the pleasure of owning and driving it.
