I love Emerald, it was my first and to this day favorite pokemon game. I've played it many many times before. I was dumbfounded when he swapped the order of his moves during battle. Never realized that was possible. Learn something new everyday.

Are nuzlocke speedruns a thing ?
well, many of the any% speedruns would actually satisfy nuzlocke conditions if they are beaten deathless. This one is an exception as you actually catch two pokemon on the same route but it would not be that hard to play around this. Ohter than that, playing with the nuzlocke ruleset would essentially just add another reset condition to an already RNG-heavy run so I don't know ...
I watch pokemon speedruns hoping for the random crits to end the run.
Finished this game for the first time yesterday^^
In-game runtime: 56hrs -_-
to be fair, it took him MUCH more than 56 hours to be able to beat it in less than 3.
Now to do all the gold symbols, master contests, and the national dex....

By doing a "frame perfect manip", he is trying to exploit how Mudkips stats are generated. Instead of getting a completely random Mudkip, he knows exactly when to "pick" Mudkip to get one with good stats. It's all to do with exploiting RNG.

Why does everyone play as the girl ?
I'm surprised they didn't mention but in Emerald specifically, Rival 2 is different based on whether you fight May or Brendan. Brendan leads with slugma, which is safer to set up on since Wingull (May's lead) can confuse you. So the female protagonist is more consistent for a hard fight.
But also in most games with gendered rivals the male rival talks less so even in Emerald being a girl is faster
