      You’re so right, it’s such a mental game. The work doable, but it’s so easy to get caught up and discouraged. I’ve been reading Eckhart Tolle (on Colin’s recommendation) and slowly learning to be more in the moment and stress out much less.

    Hi. Sorry for your bad luck with the boat and I give you props for your never give up attitude.
    I have been in construction for over 40 years. The dust can be mitigated with a shop-vack just need a good filter for it.
    Also get an oscillating multi tool it can be more precise than a saws all and you can get into tighter areas with it and a little less dust. You can get a nice 24 V Dewalt for around $100.
    Next I see the fiberglass has pulled away in places and you are cutting it out so you can grind it smooth so you can start over.
    Rather than cut it all out ( a lot of labor and dust. Why not inject Resin into the separated areas let it fill and strengthen, bonding the two back together.
    Drill a little hole just through the inner surface this will allow you to inject the separated or delaminated sections less invasive less dust less work. Then maybe apply some fiberglass and resin to the existing pieces to make them stronger.
    The boat company should put out a fix like this for your boat. Theirs no need for all that dust and labor. You will still need access to it but with less dust.
    Good luck and let me know if this helps
    Cheers. Robert

    • @david_shih
      @david_shih  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Injecting resin into the separated parts sound like a great idea! But I’m worried about adhesion-you know how fiberglass needs to be ground down before new layers are added (to remove the aiming blush.) I wonder if the separated layers need to be roughed up (which wouldn’t be possible) or suffer adhesion problems. I need to go pickup one of those dewalt multitool-my Ryobi ones suck!

    • @Themarriedbachelor
      @Themarriedbachelor 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sorry I wasn’t more clear.
      I would use an epoxy resin not a fiberglass resin they make all kinds of epoxy’s that will bond that without having to scuff it up some two part that when you push it through the syringe the tube will mix the two parts together creating a chemical reaction that’ll help it set up harder bond stronger and possibly stay flexible if you Do some research and find a good Epoxy for your application. Also instead of cutting out the old bulkhead why not sister a strong thin piece of material to each side of the existing bulkhead. By gluing 1/2 inch sheet of plastic to ether side of the bulkhead or a 1” piece to just one side of it if you can’t access the other side. I would glue it then through bolt it making the 2 new pieces and old bulkhead one strong solid piece. With a lot less mess

    Well done! Probably a bit late for this suggestion, but when I do grinding and paint on my steel boat, I use a 12” extractor fan that has a long exhaust tube. It shifts 65m3 of air a minute. I used it when I shotblasted the inside of my outriggers (1 metre diameter by about 9metres) and then painted them and it really kept the dust under control.

Keep up the good work and if you need some motivation/venting therapy channel those feelings into the parts of the boat that failed. Basically fold those feeling back into the problem if that makes sense....don't look at it as destroying your boat......look at it as destroying the obstacle preventing you from living the life you want to live. Sometimes you have to rage at a problem before you can make it your bitch. lol I am going through something similar with an RV I bought....it took me forever to get started on repairing her because I looked at it as destroying something that would help me live a dream of mine...once I wrapped my head around the fact that her issues where standing in the way of living how I wanted to live it was a lot easier and less scary to get started with destroying what on the outside looked perfectly fine. They also know the glues they used, thus should know what solvents "soften" them !
    The Balance/ nexus company share a video build with its clients.

    I cringe watching a Circ saw on wood under pressure, i’d rather have a Jig-saw or mini recip get pinched mid cut while cutting in weird position just above my leg arteries or other blood enriched areas. …..Tab relief, everything is tabbed, bank on it…man i do not like dust and fiberglass? hopefully you design something to help minimize that. like maybe a second or third vac hooked up to some PVC pipes with holes or slots in it mounted near the grind spots to suck in the airborne dust…and I would even go overboard and have 6 or 7 of these wands hanging to suck the dust as much as possible!! - Good luck - and appreciate seeing the vids no matter how its going…just cool to watch, especially if someone that has discovered theirs is Bent as well….you guys are making it easier for them with every filmed event….

      Thanks for the circ saw advice...you scared the crap out of me with the comments on the leg arteries. And I thought i was being safe protecting my hearing...It's amazing how much you overlook and can learn, cheers. I'm done with the grinding and I'll have those videos up in the next few weeks. It was a mess....good lord so much dust. I went with an 8" duct that I adapted to the hatch and then powered it with a 1600cfm duct fan. I also had two 150 cfm shopvacs sucking through a dust deputy. I reduced dust by maybe 50% compared to parlay, but it's not like I was any less itchy... The main advantage was creating negative pressure so the dust didn't go to other parts of the boat [as much].

    Cutting it all out with the minimal amount of later visible cuts is certainly a tough job, but rebuilding everything will be expensive in material and labor. I hope you already have an idea where to get that done. If you dump it all, perhaps Colin could use some trimming you don't need any more.

    • @david_shih
      @david_shih  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm going to use this opportunity to completely remodel the forward cabins...maybe a workshop in 1 and a kids playroom in the other. Funny you mention the trimmings! Colin ended up taking a bunch of them so they have the privilege of forever living on in Parlay! I'll have to do a walk through and have him point out where everything ended up fitting in.

      @@david_shih Well, I rebuilt enough stuff to always think about what can be recycled. A small workshop is a great idea! A vice is so much better than working at the dock floor with someone standing on a board as substitute. Sounds like you already have a plan.

      @@michaelhaardt5988 oh man I’ve done the “standing-on-it” vice method. No fun. Will definitely include a vice, thanks for the suggestion.

    Hi David. You guys manage to make this project seems comical. I'm sure it's not, but if you can't laugh at it, you wouldn't be able to do it.

      Hey JC! Glad you’re watching! It is a bit comical don’t you think? I watched some videos online of some guys working on boats so I thought, “hell, it can’t be that hard, I’ve fixed some drywall holes before.” So I sail all the way down here and try to copy them before I finally realize what I’m actually in for. I laugh about it daily!

    I'm sure you are well along now and don't need my advice. But buy wood working dust collection system and use it to collect the dust. Use shop vacuum dust collection for your grinding and sanding machines. Use box fans with heat and air filters on the back side. Move air through as many filters as you can. See woodworking dust collection systems.

    • @david_shih
      @david_shih  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can use all the advice I can get man! Walk me though the box fans--why do they need heat? I ended up going with a dual dust deputies as a dust collection system powered by 2 of those highest CFM shopvacs. To be honest it still wasn't enough to contain the endless amounts of dust!

      Give me a email address. I need to send you pictures. Do you have 220 volts available? I used to own a cabinet manufacturing company. Dust removal is a large part of machining wood in a enclosed environment. (Side note: I'm surprised at how the cabinets are built, certainly European, but usually they are integrated into the boat for/to add structural integrity. By shaping them to fit the shape of the hull and tabing them to the hull. I guess they want them to be able to be remodeled without having reinforce the hull.
      Back to the dust collection. I need to send a few pictures. You will get why you are having problems. It's all cfms, cubic feet per minute. Running a plastic duct work out of the boat connected to big fans or fan. Depending on the budget and availability. But in short you want to replace as much air as possible as closest to your work and move it out of the boat.

      The heater filter taped on the back of a box fan. The fan is just pulling air through the filter. No heat just a filter that fits a heat and air handling unit in a home. They sell them a dollar general.

    Forget this project the fixed spots will crack again shortly, even if you reinforce them. It’s because that flex will occur above and below the spot. It’s a BAD design, there is no cure. I advise sell the boat and move on. I commend you on your energy and enthusiasm! Great editing!!! Like a Pro.

      Hey thanks man, trying hard to stay positive! A part of me worries about exactly what you’re saying-we’re trying to compensate for that by extending and thickening the glass further in all directions. I’m all in on this boat and can’t afford a $100k loss so if it ends up cracking again I’ll be back in the yard I guess.

    Best solution to get rid of fiberglass dust on your body use baby powder or any kind of powder and a soft shirt or towel to wipe it off your body gently. I actually bought a cheap feather duster. An had one for be4 powder an one for after the powder... It works well...
