How to deal with seasickness... and how it almost ruined this video series before it started. This is Day 1 of the Pacific crossing. Everyone is helping with the last-minute prep before we say goodbye to Mexico to start our 3000-mile passage across the Pacific Ocean. The seas are rough and the thing I dread most happens... I'm seasick. But, the best part of being seasick is that I’m off to a great start on losing weight because I was too scared to eat anything!

toooo damn kind dick. working on the next videos now!
David is the ultimate human being.
@@brendangeraghty8865 Yeah I get a kick out of him. His energy and enthusiasm come through the camera. I see why Collin likes having him around. His in-your-face style would be annoying as fuck if it was not couched in what I perceive to be true humility and self-awareness. He seems like an awesome guy. But I still eyeroll over him regularly, that's part of the fun. He's genuine enough that the puppy-dog way he approaches life gives you little choice but to love him and want to pet him.
Four sets of acupressure bracelets on my catamaran for visitors. Wife started to get seasick walking on the marina Warf leading to the boat while were still dating. Vomiting before we even cleared the breakwater. One acupressure bracelet on each wrist cured her of ever getting seasick again.
It’s amazing that you’ve kept it up despite the wife getting sick! Glad you stuck through it bc it’s epic isn’t it?
@@david_shih At my age I would have to stick $1K bills in each ear to be somewhat attractive to younger girls and future ex-wives.
The best thing for sea sickness that I found to work for me was having a ja of Japanese pickled Ginger. Believe me it really works!
I definitely haven’t tried that one! Pickled ginger it is! I’ll try it!
@@david_shih Yes, I always chewed and sucked on each piece of pickled ginger when ever crossing from Maui to Molokai by ferry, the Pailolo Channel which is also known as the windiest and roughest seas in the Hawaiian Islands.
@@islandboy50 where does one buy Japanese pickled ginger? Is it in a jar or cold?
@@david_shih yes, in the jar or in a large bag in Asian markets.
The best tip is still: Get up on the center deck, follow the motion of the boat, and keep your eyes on the horizon. Yes, ginger or sweets can settle the nausea
I only got motion/sea sickness for a couple of years when I was around 12-14 years old, thank god I don't have to fight that anymore unless I'm down below and fight the motion of the boat.
im with you on "following the motion of the boat" but i can't really figure out why it works!
@@david_shih maybe because your center is stable and it's your legs/hips that move?
Everything you said was spot on. Driving really helps, besides that just doing boat work has helped me before. Grab a brush and just start cleaning. At the very least they will give you less crap about puking on the deck.
hahah luckily i didn't puke! but man i wanted to the whole time!
It sucks when you don't have a coastline with a static object to watch. I remember many morning's after race party's just sitting on the rail dead center of the boat and just fixate on a single object for 5-10 minutes. Helped with the hangover and dealing with the up/down motions from the boat moving through the water.
Yes, a coastline definitely helps most people, but for me it doesn’t seem to make much of a difference. Either I’m all good or I’m going downhill.
Really feel for you Dave. Being sea sick is the worst. You can't just 'push through it' or 'man-up'. The only thing you can do is hope for land, sleep or a quick death. Couple that with the guilt you feel for being a burden on the crew and it's the worst.
you totally get it... hate letting people down, and also hate feeling helpless. thankfully it goes away eventually!
Quick death!!! Hahahaha!!! Love it!
Funny and recognisable.😅 Reminds me of my younger years. We went boating with fathers and a friend from our favourite holiday island on the sea near here. I the boat-crazy was the only one who got seasick🤢 and hung over the railing🤮. How disappointed I was☹️, and so along with my lack of language skills, I did not become a boat pilot.❌️ But finally at the beginning of this year it all suddenly worked out and I have now been living on my bought 38ft cabin sailboat for several months and seasickness stayed away as I crossed the bumpy IJsselmeer in May.🥳
Great to hear!!! Seasickness passes!!! There’s hope for everyone! Too cool that you’re living aboard now!
Hang in their, you will become one of the great sailing channels out there…make sure your wife does not leave you.
Thanks for the faith! As for mary…I’m good as long as she doesn’t figure out I don’t know what I’m doing.

Your video’s are probably the best out of all the TH-cam sailing channels and I know as I watch them all! Great job 👏
aw man thanks james...
I agree you have a style that is funny but also short and to the point. You don't belabor the subject so that keeps it from becoming boring
I've not tried this(not been sea sick), but it's on quite a few of the sailing forums. Said to be a Japanese remedy. Tape your 2nd and 3rd toes together on both feet. Something to with pressure points.
i cant tell if youre messing with me... i'm going to do this in a video and everyone is going to laugh

Haha l true. Most people probably just pretend it never happens to them I guess.
I feel like I was tolerating you when I would see you on Parley, but then I saw you moderate the Annapolis TH-cam panel...you did a great job. You kept the entire room and the TH-cam audience excited and alive for the duration. Then I took a chance and starting watching your channel and I must say, you do a great job. You are an acquired personality, but when I finally arrived I enjoy your "not even noticeable" sponsorship segues. You go Diamond Dog Dave!
aw thanks Lumia... what kind words! i'm an acquired taste...
Thankfully I tend to fairly immune to seasickness but do get just a general blah feeling occasionally. There is no more helpless feeling than being stuck on a boat for days and feeling sick. The best fastest way to get over it is to just be sick and get it out of your system.
hey riley...yeah once it starts, it seems like you just have to let it go its course.
Yay there is hope. Been on many boats but only seasick once - of course it had to be with people i had met for the first time that day on their lux launch in pleasant seas. It was so random- the way different boats roll has a lot to do with it
youre right, totally random! ive been a few long passages in rougher seas with no problems!
Just remember: What doesn't kill ya...makes ya something or other. 🐒
My one and only time with seasickness was weird. I felt perfectly fine I just couldn't keep my balance. It was a fairly nice day, just some high rolling waves on the bay. I had been out in much worse, before and after, and felt nothing. Most crewmates said night ops was the worst time of day for them.
Just once in about 100'ish patrols/missions. But i was so glad when we to get back to the docks!
Glad to know you over came your bout of it!
Patrols? Missions?? I hate do you do for a living?? I love night time dinghy missions.
@@david_shih lol, sorry...I was in the US Coast Guard for 6 years. I stood radio watches but jumped on the SAR/patrol boats when I was on my off time. SAR = search & rescue. We did a few daily patrols in each direction of the navigable waterway(s). And missions might be safety boardings, commercial ship inspections, or law/drug enforcement. And this was the "Old Guard." Back when it was under the penny-pinching Dept of Transportation.
All in all those were pretty fun times...back when I was 40 years younger.
Another great video David, thank you. I really enjoy your enthusiasm and sense of humor.
thx chet! trying to keep these vids fun!
I don’t get sea sick, but I do get landsick when I get back on the hard. I feel like I’m still moving and it makes me a bit queezy. I never puke but it isn’t comfortable. If I get back onboard my boat, the symptoms go away within minutes.

Back when I was young in my late teens. I crewed on a 120ft schooner for two weeks on the west coast of Vancouver Island British Columbia. We got caught in a big storm everyone one on the boat got seasick with the exception of myself and a young woman who was also on the crew. We basically were on watch for 24hr's, and we could not go below deck because it smelt like 100-year-old boat filled with vomit. So, we rode out the storm in the pilothouse running the boat while the captain was sick in his cabin behind us. Great adventure but scary at the time.
a 120 schooner!? thats huge! sound scary
@@david_shihIt was the boat was built around 1900. It was like an outward bound type trip. Teaching older teens life skills.
Nice video, David. Thank you for getting into the challenges of Mal de Mer. Sea sickness is AWFUL! I have not let it keep me from sailing, as a career. Pitching is the worst for me. I the last few years I have been pleased with Meclizine. Taking it the night before departure allows the sleepiest effect to pass during sleep!
Promethazine is the next level up of prevention.
I'm glad Colin offered you that experience. Nothing like learning by doing.
meclizine.... thats bonine right? if so, that stuff is better than dramamine for me at least! what line of work are you in?
Don't feel bad David, I got seasick on an aircraft carrier. Great video, cheers from Texas.
waaaa? that kinds sounds like fun!
To deal with seasickness. It’s a mental exercise. You takes control of your situation. Face forward. Follow horizon in front. If you can steer the boat you are in more control. Never lay down close your eyes. Be active. Force your self to film and do all types activity.
closing my eyes was the only way to trick my brain into not being confused....but i agree, its definitely mental! but also once it starts happening its all downhill.
Rocking video as always!
Worst sea sick I’ve ever been was a casino in Mobile Alabama. It was on land and looked like a pirate ship. But the inside moved. I think they were trying to recreate the motion? What ever it was my body wasn’t having it. May….may have been that it was definitely not the first location of the night and there were many drinks involved that evening.
oh like one of those docked casino ferries? being in side really sucks

sushi as your last land meal before spending a month on the ocean? What was Collin thinking? Pork and beef and chicken baby! There will be plenty of fish in the weeks ahead.
Oooh sushi is our fav! Can’t get enough! But we definitely did start missing the meat pretty quickly.
Worked for years on charter fishing boats in the Mid-Atlantic and have seen anything and everything used for seasickness and have seen people have success and utter failure with pretty much anything. Its not common but occasionally i do get sick myself, but I found it to be a sign that my ears are getting clogged and i need to see the doc. Ive used the wristbands when i need something but many pairs have been left next to buckets that seasick passengers had been throwing up in all day so mileage does vary. The mental side is huge and if you convince yourself youre going to be seasick then you absolutely will. Eating is another part, mkre for day trips and overnights but leaving on an empty stomach is a big disadvantage.
I love how you are able to get to the point and keep it interesting. So many TH-cam channels are like watching paint dry. Keep the videos coming and your channel is going to blow up!

Argh we've all been there re sea sickness, nothing is worse, I often ponder how people survived passages over the millennia. If you do it again, consider going to a compounding pharmacist (if you have them in the US). They develop a medication 💯 tuned to your body type. Highly recommended ✌️
wait they really do that? make a custom one for you? wonder what kinda of stuff they change depending on the person.

you got it paraty! i love doing them!
*David, I get totally it with motion sickness.... yep it is all about the inner ear balance. Even on a ferry crossing, I stay at the back of the boat & look around the side of the boat. Roller coaster rides are OUT... but I did it once... was holding it in as I was so trying to get off the machine so fast & then I let rip. Even sitting on a lazyboy chair and someone comes up behind me and touches it and moves it slightly... the inner ear trigger makes me gag. Walking on a floating wharf ain't nice. Sitting in a car as it goes around windy roads... yep I once made a driver stop for me to let rip. But I finally found a cure for carsickness... with tiny movements of my feet and hands, that the driver doesn't even notice... I become the driver in that passenger seat. So whatever the driver does, I do it... Now to just figure out the seasickness. 🙂 Mary, love you singing at the end. 🙂.nz*

I used the patched behind the ear and it worked for me.
scoplamine! its magic! but so strong!
Seasickness is one of the nastiest things you can experience. I actually have an interesting story. Growing up I always got seasick. But three years ago I bought a sailbout and sailed it home over a four day passage where I wore those scopolamine pathes behind my ear. I had a really bad side effect from them where my lips and parts of my face totally dried out.
It was really bad seas and high waves for a lot of the journey(and I'm talking about the north sea bad weather). But whatever that was that turned my lips white for four days and dried me out, it cured me for being seasick. I've never been been sick since that passage. When I get on land I get mad vertigo though, but I think that is the reason for why I never get sick.
wow so the extremeness of the patches cured you? That's pretty interesting, maybe i'll try a higher dose of scoplamine and see if it fixes me permenantly. but then again i never really got sick before...
@@david_shih It's so wildly anecdoctal that it's difficult to say if it was the patches, but I felt almost like I overdosed on them and my lips were close to white coming home.
The drying out was obviously a side effect.
But for whatever reason, it just cured my seasickness permanently. I've never used patches or any medication since that, and I sail in the north sea where the swells are brutal.
My theory is that because my psyche didn't feel nausea when "it should" have, some sort of switch got turned off where I now have vertigo coming onto land. That doesn't bother me though, I kind of enjoy it if I have the time to close my eyes and relax. It passes within a day or two.
Not to make this to long either.
But from a psychological perspective I think seasickness and it's reactions is inherently connected to fear. So taking meds that remove nausea could potentially "hack" your brain into a mode where one would more rationally approach

But then there was that time I got stressed (wall-kind) and got the "yrsla", loosely translated to the "spinnings". I got sooo dizzy, the local callcenter (1177) send an ambulance to fetch me to the ER. A lot of tests followed, bc the "spinns" is actually a big signs of stroke or heartproblems. My friend turned to me and said, "29 times".
28 times?!?!?!?!?!? wait...29? how?! im guessing you dont get seasick?
I was once in rough weather on my Chrysler 22 and stuck my head in the anchor locker to fix the bow light connection and got a little quesy. But I went back on deck and the feeling went away. That's the extent of my sea sickness experience. I spent a lot of time sailing and also working on boats in the Gulf of Mexico. I've always enjoyed rough weather on boats. It's as good or better than a carnival ride. Woohoo.@@david_shih
McDonald's 😂🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮 and .... SUSHI???? what a combination...
HOW??? WHY???
now we know why got sick 🤣🤣🤣
I know folks who get seasick stepping on a boat ... luckily it only but always hits me in storms...
great video!!!

So as an airline pilot I had to deal with "motion sickness" when I did my commercial rating (bunch of pitching and rolling maneuvers) and I couldn't take the pills which like you said are very very drowsy and they were prohibited by the FAA for that reason. So I found that a natural recipe worked quite well for me: lots of salty chips combined with a sugary drink like coke starting 30 minutes before the motion. So at sea you would need a steady intake of the stuff but it doesn't have to be big in volume at all. I have tried it at sea as well with a very rolling motion on my boat and as long as I keep the chips coming slowly but steadily with a sip of coke along the way things seem to get well. Hope it helps the crash of those motion sickness pills is just not great :0
well svevergreen, you just mentioned my 2 of my faves...salty chips and sugary soda! i wonder why that works, but i'll definitely try it next time!
Love your videos!
aw thanks rl eight nine nine two...appreciate you watching!

I always get sea sick but can usually function.
i get a bit of a weak stomach usually and its not so bad, but this time it was a different beast.
@@david_shih I was crossing from Miami to Bimini, at the helm for three hours, no issue. My dad took the helm and by the time I got to the high side seat, my brain said "hey, we're not doing anything, let's throw up". I drove for the leeward side and threw up. lol
What's this? A video? :o
Must be hallucinating! ;)
i know i know....did you catch the last one too?
@@david_shihI catch ALL the videos. Started right about the time you first hit Panama and you only had about 3 subscribers. ;)
Sea sickness? Try "Ribena" blackcurrant cordial ... doesn't stop you being sick, but at least it doesn't taste bad on the way up ;)
An old Aboriginal cure for seasickness is to close your eyes and sit beneath a Gum tree. Works every time!
wait really? wonder why it works? oh wait....u mean bc you'd be on land.... got me
Meclizine is better option for anti-seasick barfing med over Dramamine for Mec does not cause drowsiness
Dude don't let the side down .
Saying Mary is better than you...
My wife is always saying that she's better than me.
Naa only joking great vid guys, I really enjoy all of your vids😂
Cinnarizine works better than any of the things you showed David if you can find some.
where does one find that elusive med?
@@david_shih in my medicine cabinet.
The other place where I get it is from eBay. Comes from Romania believe it or not.
Hey David how’s it hanging? I’m not sure which episode talked about all the fish you caught. What was the different types of rod and reel setups you guys used for catching the fish especially the mahi mahi?
So far I’ve watched everything you’ve made. Yes call me a fan. I need a hat though. Lol.
dude we gotta get you a hat!!!!! you'll have to excuse poorly designed site, but here's the shop...davidshihsails.com/shop/ make sure you write a note that it's you and mary will throw in some extras for you. as for the rods and reels....we were using penn's on this trip, but as sailors, we typically fish with the oldest and crappiest gear... Nahoa even catch massive fish on handlines. our success comes from the long amounts of time we spend out there! no one can loose if they fish everyday for weeks!
I know someone who gets sea sick just from being on a boat. She even gets sea sick when it is on the hard.
copy right from the artist at the end.
was that celine Dion
Hahaha! That was me singing!!!😂
