  • In this video, we're gonna get together and paint some black and white trees with a bright red happy tree using an impasto technique. This is a good lesson for beginners and up.
    I’m painting on a 16x20-inch stretched canvas, but you can paint on any type and size of canvas you like.
    I used:
    • A 1-inch flat brush
    • A 3/4-inch filbert brush
    • A 1/2-inch angle brush
    I’m using Liquitex Basics acrylic paint in the following colors:
    • Mars Black
    • Titanium White
    • Cadmium Red Deep Hue
    • Naphthol Crimson
    • Cadmium Yellow Deep Hue
    But you can use any colors you like.

      Then you should do it!!!! Try it on a smaller canvas, and then do the big one you want! Bravery isn't needed in art. You just have to do it

      Sara and Jane hope you don't mine me "easel" dropping but as I was scrolling I saw this. Sara I am very new to painting. I was so scared I started the "Walk In The Rain" painting on a 4x4 and and then an 8x10, 11x14 then the 14x20 by time I got to that one I wasn't so nervous~ well maybe I was ;) but I learnt somethings along the way... I think it turned out ...Okay.. Well, my Ex-daughter-in-law loved it and wanted it..I gave it to her. So I may have to paint another that size for me... to go along with this one....which I will practice on an 8x10 or 11x14 first...lol I hope you don't mind my interruption...but if I can do it...anyone(you) can do it!! For me, Jane helps make it easier...

    Hi Jane, I love your channel! I have been having a hard time with this one, how are you picking up paint without getting the paint from the other side of the brush in the pile of paint? I just end up with a pile of light grey and dark grey after a few dabs. I have sneaking suspicion that I have no idea how to "load" a paint brush.

  • @chadielkhoury

    Hi can you please tell me how long you waited till u added the highlight. Very beautiful painting...

    • @PaintingwithJane
      @PaintingwithJane  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Not very long. All of the paint under it was still quite wet. If you let the first layer dry, then the highlight won't smear into it and blend a little. Just depends on what look you're going for :)

  • @rickmitchell6735
    @rickmitchell6735 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Jane, You're my favorite! Im a beginner and would like to know, is there a rule as to when you should dry your painting?

    • @PaintingwithJane
      @PaintingwithJane  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aaaw, thank you, Rick! No, not really. I dry my painting whenever I don't want the next color I'm going to use to mix with the previous, but some people paint straight through and let it dry at the end. Whatever you're the most comfortable with :)

    OH! I can't wait to try this one!!. I've been painting the cardinal...l mehh not so swell-I'll go back to it some other time. This will go with the Walk In The Rain one(s) I painted. The 14x20 went to Iowa with my ex-daughter-in-law... after it was done I really wanted to keep it but she really wanted it. OH... I also love the soothing/calming music just the right volume too. It helps with the tenseness I get...lol I did look up the screaming at the yellow paint vid...ummh yeah I may need that for the cardinal painting...bahahahaha.... Thanks so much Jane!

    I have a question. Your paint looks very shiny and liquidy and my acrylic paint doesn't look like that.
    is it the type of paint that you're using or are you adding a gel medium to it? Or is it water? I am just a beginner and I want to get that look of wet and shiny on my canvas. Also did you put gesso on your canvas? Thank you very much!

    I love love love this painting and I did it recently. Sadly, my paints mix too much, lol. I'll work on that.
    What a brilliant piece. This one and the red girl in the rain both hold the same stark contrast I find to be beautiful. I'm trying to upgrade my paints slowly (so I can afford it) which means I can only pick and choose a few at a time. I don't know what paintings I'll do next so I can't go off of that. What do you suggest? Definitely titanium white and mars black. I think maybe cadmium red, pthalo blue, yellow ochre... wow, there are too many XD

    • @PaintingwithJane
      @PaintingwithJane  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lol! Yes, there's so many colors, it can be hard to choose. If you're only going to start with a few, I think the colors you listed are a great place to start. However, if you can get a coupon to your craft store, the Liquitex 48 pack is another awesome way to start for a good price! Then you can just replace the ones you run out of with the larger tubes :)

    Jane, this painting is beautiful. I'm more experienced with Tole painting. Not a lot of experience with canvas painting. So my problem is that the brushes I have are for Tole painting. When I try to use them, they tend to be a bit too soft for canvas painting. Can you recommend a set (name brand) of brushes for a beginner?

    • @PaintingwithJane
      @PaintingwithJane  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Debra! Unfortunately, I don't use name brand brushes. But in your craft store, there are tons of brushes specifically made for acrylic painting on canvas with the artist paints, not where the craft paints are. Pick up a pack or two of a variety of brushes to start with. I'll be doing a vlog on brushes later this week that I hope will help.

    What about wetting the canvas? Or would you recommend wetting the brush with a water to medium mixture to help spread the paint?

    Hi Jane, I love the way you teach. You make it round so simple. and it's really easy to follow. I was wondering if you could teach the painting of colorful faces. I saw a few vedio on TH-cam. It's so colourful and would love to learn from you.

    I see this, I am thinking Schindler's List. Whether it is intended or not, in my -quite often- humbled opinion your work has a lot of "noir" in it. It works. Its great. Thank you for sharing.

    I love the impasto technique, Jane. Did you use a gel medium to thicken the paint? Also, since you do such lovely impressionistic work, have you heard of a painter named Paul Crimi, at paulcrimifinearts.com? He does some interesting work with birch trees. I found him on youtube, and recommend him to you, as you both have similar style. His gallery on his website is inspiring. Thanks again for all you do for us.

      Thank you, Priscilla! No, I didn't use any mediums. Just lots of paint :) I'll check him out. Thank you!!

    This painting was so much fun to do. I'm very happy with my happy trees. I used a smaller filbert for the black and white trees and a larger one for my happy tree. You are the bomb diggity, Mrs. Jane! Thank you so much for sharing your talent in art and teaching.
