*1:57**:* Your trick for calculating the required length of fabric for a given length of gathered stitch (long, medium or short gathered stitch) was *JUST SPOT ON* . Thank you for this tip.
I just purchased a gathering foot for a pinafore dress I'm making. I had NO idea I could use it to sew the gathered skirt to the flat bodice. Thank you so much for that demonstration. You made it look easy
omg!!! so easy! I spent so much time yesterday gathering for an apron and I knew I had a set of presser foots, lol. Not today! Thank you so much for sharing! =o)
Wow, I am amazed - I’ve been sewing for years and I have this foot, but never used it, because I wasn’t sure what it was for. Where have I been? Thank you!
I usually have no trouble with this foot but I’ve tried it with 3 different fabrics today and they’re absolutely refusing to move under the foot and it’s a nightmare SOS what do I do
Jean I’ve had zero success with mine and like you, I’ve tried pretty much everything. First it jammed. Then it wouldn’t sew in a straight line and the gathers were uneven and messy. It looks easy to do on the videos but at this point, I’m sceptical. Hope you get it right xx
I am relatively new at using mine, but after much trial and error, I discovered one thing that NONE of these videos mention and that is that the top and bottom layers FEED at different speeds. Im used to feeding my layers together. Doing this will cause your bottom layer not to ruffle. I found that if I use my left hand UNDER the top layer,, to just guide the bottom layer to keep it feeding straight but without putting any pressure or tension on it, and then holding the top layer with my right hand to keep it in the slot, I got a much better result. You just have to remember that the bottom layer is going to feed much faster than the top. Also when using thin or silky fabric on top, I use a tear away stabilizer on top of the top layer to help keep it from slipping out of the slot.
I bought a gathering foot too and if you want to gather cotton, it doesn't work very well. You have to put your finger behind the presser foot to make it gather. If you want to use some fabric like tulle or a lightweight fabric, it would work better I think.
That looks like a much more useful presser foot to have than the rolling hem presser foot.A previous TH-camr demonstrated how to use bit and she iron the hem.I planned to,but I would not get that crap again.I will get the gather presser foot though.
That's a good idea to measure your fabric to be gathered then record your settings to determine the centimeters continuous ruffled yardage. For all my sewing, a scrap "prototype" would be made first beforehand.
I need to gather a length of fabric twice the length of the existing size it should be. In other words I need to halve the length of the fabric to be gathered by gathering it, what stitch length would be best? It’s a relatively fine cotton.
Greetings from Canada. I have a question: how do I know to what extent the fabric will be gathered before I gather it? Let's say, when gathered, it needs to be 20". How much fabric do I need in order to achieve the desired gathered length 20"? What is the ratio? Is there a formula? Hope you can help. I would really appreciate it.
I don't think there's an exact ratio tbh. I'd just check it with some scrap fabric how much it shrinks with the stitch length I like, and calculate with that in mind.
Only just found this video and like this idea of gathering AND joining to 'flat' piece, ie skirt to bodice. Can anyone help me find this foot for Janome, please? I need 'snap-on' for 7mm max foot (Cat B) Many thanks :)
Trying to find a gathering foot that will gather fabric and attach to straight fabric on the front all in one go, so that the ruffle is showing top and bottom, not sewn from the back at the hem. Is there such a foot? My machine is a Jenome. With this foot, I'd have to gather trim fabric first, then attach to front of straight fabric. I am putting lace onto Angel Gowns. TIA
Hi Sally, adjust your stitch length to adjust the fullness of the gathers. Try on some scraps of fabric first until you are happy with the results and remember different types of fabric will react differently.
thank you. yes I am making prairie skirt...lots of gathering and different fabrics. seems to be too tight of a gather. Will try adj stitch length. thank you for the quick reply
Turn the tension down to loosen the gathering. That's all! Works on any fabric...too tight? Tension lesser numbers on your dial; higher tension: 7, 8, or 9 to make the ruffles more gathered! If you have a serger, instead of using your sewing machine, here's a great setting: Left needle: 7 Right needle: 7 Upper looper: 3 Lower looper: 3 Stitch length: 4 Differential feed: 2.5 Just be sure to set your tension dials, stitch length dial, and differential feed dial back to normal serging after you have created your perfect ruffles! Hope this info helps you, and always test on similar fabric scraps before using your good fabric to examine the results.😊
I have bought this foot and am very disappointed with it, I used the stitch length 5 and I have hardly any gather at all. certainly nothing like the gather you have. Any ideas why?
tricia1234gm increase your upper thread tension to a 7 or 8 and reduce your stitch length to normal 2.5 and see watcha get ! It’s the thread tension that creates the gathering
Turn your tension to 8 or 9 and your length to 2. You can also attach your ruffle at the same time to the bottom edge of your bodice. That's what the open slot on the gathering foot is for!😊
Same with me. I tried and tried. Upper and lower tension , stitch length, fabrics. I have many years of sewing expertise. I went back to my Singer 1940s ruffler and pleat attachment. I thought the little simple foot would be easier, but No! I sew lots of dancing petticoats and dirndle skirts. I need something reliable to make full ruffles quickly with no fuss.

Ah Alexis that's so sweet of you to say thank you I'm glad it was useful to you.
This was one of the best videos I have seen on using the gathering foot. Thank you
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it.
I have ordered a gathering foot and i cant wait to use it. I absolutely hate the process gathering otherwise but I love wearing ruffles.
Wow, I am amazed - I’ve been sewing for years and I have this foot, but never used it, because I wasn’t sure what it was for. Where have I been? Thank you!
this is so useful. Thank you! I am loving your videos

Thank you for sharing
It's a pleasure.

What I was looking for was the setting for gathering stitche
Quick and easy, great video.
Thankyou. Very informative
Great demo. Thanks 😀

Best video ever !!

Tighten your top tension. The higher the tension the bigger the gather.

Dang, mine doesn't gather anything and I've tried every stitch length I have. Is is a junk presser foot or am I just stupid?
I need to gather a length of fabric twice the length of the existing size it should be.
In other words I need to halve the length of the fabric to be gathered by gathering it, what stitch length would be best?

@@krisztinadobo1367 Thank you. Have a good day.
Good to see how that foot works. Thanks!
It's a pleasure.
Can I used full shutter machine ? And where is the place. To purchase it
Thank you.
Should you one material be longer then the other when attaching two?.
Yes
I always find that my fabric shifts and goes wonky on me. I wish I could get it to work as easy as you do
Any tips when the foot doesn't do this? It doesn't seem to want to gather no matter the tension or stitch length...
Hi thanks for sharing. What machine are you using? (Do you have a knee lifter for the foot ) ?
Can you use a zigzag stitch?
Is this allowed in singer sewing machine or for juki (big machines) only?
Did you change the tension
How to adjust the gather distance in this case when two are sew together。
Only just found this video and like this idea of gathering AND joining to 'flat' piece, ie skirt to bodice. Can anyone help me find this foot for Janome, please? I need 'snap-on' for 7mm max foot (Cat B) Many thanks :)
I just ordered this foot labeled ‘Janome’ from Walmart. It is a generic. I also can’t get it to work.
Thank you
Can you gather 2 layers?
Trying to find a gathering foot that will gather fabric and attach to straight fabric on the front all in one go, so that the ruffle is showing top and bottom, not sewn from the back at the hem. Is there such a foot? My machine is a Jenome.

morevaseret Yes! This gathering foot does a ruffle to the bodice in one motion! That's why it is so convenient!
No need to adjust Sewing machine tension?
I cannot get my gathering foot to work. I don’t understand what is going wrong. When I use it, it just looks like a normal straight stitch?
how to you regulate the gathering? I have this foot and the gathering is too full/tight . How can I regulate it to be less full of a gather?
Hi Sally, adjust your stitch length to adjust the fullness of the gathers. Try on some scraps of fabric first until you are happy with the results and remember different types of fabric will react differently.

I still cannot get the gather
Turn your tension to 8 or 9 and your length to 2. You can also attach your ruffle at the same time to the bottom edge of your bodice. That's what the open slot on the gathering foot is for!😊
Me too
What settings?
why my gathering foot not working at all?
I can’t get it to work for me. Whoo is me …..
What to do. This is driving me crazy. Thanks
Gathering foot still giving problem
Thanks very much
My gathering foot isn’t working . Just does a straight line
So disappointing
I have the pfaff passport 3
mine doesn't gather 😩 i bought two different gathering foot both doesn't work. It only stitches straight line.
Same with me. I found changing the tension helped
