I'm 63 so I remember those winter Olympics in Sarajevo. I was only 23, rambunctious, and not really paying attention to world events and wars. I hate war, always have. But, this is a very sad story. Thank you for teaching me about it. I love that they turned the bobsled track into art as that is the one thing that seems to always save us after or during dark times. Take care!
That's interesting to hear Holly. It must be strange remembering such turbulent and distressing times. Though perhaps, people may say that 40 years from present, about what is going on in the world now. I'm glad you enjoyed it, take care :)
Thanks as always mate, appreciate that. It was an interesting place which I unfortunately probably appreciate more in hindsight after doing more research
Fantastic. It's a shame I didn't have more time to explore but also research beforehand. I hadn't even noticed the sniper hole until watching the footage back after!
Hi Ben, it is interesting looking at the Art work on the bobsleigh track as it is quite detailed. The picture of the Mascot is so sharp and fresh. On the track the right side ledge looks like it was not very high. It they were going so fast I wonder if anyone flew off that track on the right side. On the left side the wall angel looked pretty substantial to help keep the competitors safely on the Bobsleigh track.
I got there in December 1995 deployed with the U.S. Army. Our station base was President Titos old summer home. There are many dark tales about that track also ... many political prisoners were taken there and executed by firing squads. It was a very distressing place to see and be at that time. It is nice to see repairs and healing.
I bet you have some fascinating and equally disturbing stories. It's hard to comprehend what went on, and just how recent it was. Thank you for your comment
Hi Ben How are you? I’m well I’ve not been to Sarajevo even though I’m not that far from it. I have however flown above BiH many times. In February this year I flew across Bosnia and there wasn’t a flake of snow to be observed even on the highest peaks. 40 years ago, if you look at footage of the Sarajevo Olympiad, there was snow everywhere. How times have changed. Clearly everywhere you look you can see pock marks of shells and artillery from the prolonged siege of Sarajevo 1992-1995. Never forget Best regards Zoltán
Glad to hear you're well Zoltán. I'm doing okay, thank you. Is it Croatia where you're based? I remember you saying you've been to Mostar quite a few times. Yep, I watched one of the short videos of the Olympians travelling down the track actually, snow everywhere! Thanks for the comment as always, take care
Do you know if they let you take a bike up on the cable car so that you can cycle down the bobsled track? Also, I believe there is an abandoned observatory and hotel on this hill as well? Did you see those?
I'm not entirely sure actually Mark, though check the comments, someone else mentioned that they had cycled down it! Unfortunately I wasn't aware of the other ruins at the time, otherwise I would've been exploring a bit further!
Additionally, I always take comfort seeing how nature eventually reclaims everything Yes it was the first time the Winter Olympics were held in a socialist/ communist country factoring for Moscow summer in 1980.
oh damn, no way! That would be cool to see. I've heard of others training on the track again, mountain biking, luge and even bobsleigh again supposedly. It does make me wander how people would do so while it's still an open tourist site!
@@BenRobson123 I've heard they "close" it on those days but I don't think it's that easy! There's also talk of renovation but hard to find anything....concrete! Unfortunately the actual video won't be that exciting because I didn't go fast at all! Spent 10 years waiting to go there and let's just say was very humbled immediately 😂

Brilliant find Ben! The vegetation in the surrounding area looks very nice. Great historical insight.. very detailed. Well done mate

@BenRobson123 yeah. I've seen videos of the abandoned hotel and observatory, but I'm not sure how near or far away they are from the bobsleigh track
Did you visit the Abandoned Ski jumps ?.
I didn't! I didn't know they were there are the time, and had to get the last table car back on the evening
Additionally, I always take comfort seeing how nature eventually reclaims everything

Ha, no way. I've been editing my own video about it this week..I rented a bike and rode down it 😂

@@ThereAndJackAgain can you take the bike up on the cable car?
@@MarksWorldOfAdventure You can :) plenty of room. Seats flip up to accomodate it too.
@@ThereAndJackAgain you can speed the footage up
