Really enjoyed this video Tony, the half pot showing the layers is fantastic! This year I've bought lots of daffodils and narcissi to naturalise under the plum trees in the duck enclosure and the tall trees by the piggeries.
Thanks Liz glad you enjoyed it and the visual, The thing took me longer than planting the proper one lol all for a 1 min take hehehe. It will certainly brighten up things
Great video. Mine are already planted up Lasagne style. I’ve planted 6 layers of bulbs in each x-large terracotta pot! On the very top I’ve planted pansys. They look great!
Ones I planted with bulbs last year and topped up with soil and viola’s this August I’ve noticed have shoots already poking through. I have never ever known this to happen before. Do you think it’s the weather we have had this summer? I’m in Kent and it’s still really warm down here.
I think its because its been real hot then went cold now warmed up again, We had it here last spring where Daffs were up out of the ground around Xmas so the weather is changing which means timing may alter too
I think you are right. Next year once the last have come up I just might take them out of the containers and plant them under the trees in the garden. Then plant up a new batch in October/ November. Least that way they should all be poking their heads out at the correct time. Last year I had the daffy out at Christmas.
What a great idea. This is my first year to plant tulips (USA-KY) and I wondered about what to do with the containers before the tulips break ground and what afterwards. I think I may try doing this. Thank you for the video.
I’m growing crocus, daffodil, tulip, narcissus, iris, snowdrops and I can’t wait for the colour to come. I will definitely be using this technique next year. Thanks, great video 👍🏼
This is a very interesting way of planting different types of bulbs! Most of my bulbs and other plants are planted in a container and I’ve often wondered whether it’s possible to plant several types of bulbs using one big container . I am so glad I come across your YT video. Thank you !

Fab video Tony! I loved the visual example of how you do the bulb lasagne! Even though I usually stay away from ornamentals, there is nothing better than a flourish of colour throughout spring :) I can't wait to see how it'll turn out for you with all the bulbs you planted in spring. Great stuff mate!
Thanks mate, Its nice to have some colour early in the garden even if you can not eat it. It lifts the spirits and sets you forward for a great season. I thought the visual might help folks understand it easier
Hi Thanks for this.I'm new to gardening now I'm semi retired. I have finally gone out and planted up my large deep plastic trough because I had about 70 bulbs to plant and nowhere to put them so I've planted about 50 of them following your lasagne method including aliums (varied packs) around the long edges quite close in and a central line of beautiful double daffodils which were starting to sprout then added about 30 tulip bulbs- some pale pink edged white ones (Simply Irresistible) and some purple/black (Queen of the Night)and some lighter purple and am very excited to see next March as I've had success with my experimental and marvellous wine and roses gladioli from Aldi. I hope I haven't overdone it and at the same time wonder if I can do some top planting as you have. Hooray. Thanks again. Only twenty left to go SOMEWHERE
I love growing spring bulbs and this year I want to try the lasagne method. I grow in containers as I have small garden. I like growing snowdrops, blubells, tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and crocuses. Hina
Dull and dingy? Spring is my favourite time of year. Life emerges from the winter gloom, spring bulbs, tree blossom, birdsong, longer and warmer days, and the summer to look forward to. Anyway. Great video. New sub!
Thanks Tony for a great video, I started planting yesterday but didn't realise you could put so many bulbs in. I thought they'd block each other now I'm going to try your way but have artic lilies to go in bottom hope it works
Hello Tony! I have planted spring bulbs for the first time recently around a small pond I have put in my very small wild life area, Crocus, Tulips, Alliums, and little Daffodils, also a yellow water iris for the pond which has turned brown. Great video cheers :-)
Hi Giselle, I do try to do it most times, but these videos sometimes take an entire day to film and edit and half a day to plan and do the SEO with a full-time job 3 children and other things going on it is not always possible but I do my very best to get them done if i can spare the time. I do intend on doing every video as and when I can get to it
That's an awesome idea. I've got to try this. Although I am worried that we might get snow again early next year. Fingers crossed for a warm spring 🌸🌺🌻🌼🌝
Fabulous video Tony! Love the lasagna method. I’ve never planted flower bulbs before until watching your hyacinth video last week. I’ve now planted 2 pots of blue hyacinths for Christmas gifts 🎁 And will definitely give this a go too! Thank you 😊
The flowers start early I already have tips showing so will bloom in Jan and then others will come through right up until June. Its a great way to bring colour to the garden early
@@vallee3140 The term was coined back in the early 80's by a dutch gardener who said it looked like layers of a lasagne. Here its been used for 30 years that I know of
good day to you Tony !! excellent explanation on the lasagne method of planting the spring bulbs !! i grow mine in pots, raised beds and in the ground so i found this video very satisfying !! i'm growing tulips, English Bluebells Common Snowdrops, Native British Daffodils, Woodland Tulip, Crocus, Anemone nemorosa & a couple more i can't remember the names of !! 👨🌾🎥👍✝
That will provide a riot of colour for a good few months mate. Brightens up the plot when dotted around. Plant mine similar, adding a bit of horti grit to the top. With pots with no drain holes, adding charcoal to base helps 😀👍
Sin Yin Wong cut back the dead leaves, fertilize and move the pot of the ground where it can drain properly. Next spring you should be able to enjoy the beautiful blooms again.
Hi Tony and thank you for your amazing tutorial. I love to grow bulbs inside of our home. I tried growing hyacinths indoor but their flowers did not come out of the leaves. Flowers opened up while they are low and down to the their bulbs. Did this also happen to your hyacinths? Do you know how I can prevent this problem?
Thank you for the video. I am trying forcing bulbs this year. Issue is I had to put just the bulbs in a small fridge, and now that they are chilled, I'm kind of confused how to plant. I am in US in Wisconsin, and our winters get really cold. We have an unheated garage, but I am afraid that they may get frozen (which 2 weeks ago, they probably would have) which is why I store the bulbs in the fridge. I love the layer look of bulb pots. I'm surprised not to see more videos of this, this year since people are looking forward to spring because of COVID.

Love this idea!! I've got to be careful with terracotta pots for cracking in the bad winter weather's. No greenhouse to set them in either. Which is a shame because l prefer them to the plastic counterparts! 😊
If you lift the pot up an inch or so on pot steps this will allow it to drain and wont blow due to constantly freezing and thawing

Hi Tony, where would you keep this pot throughout the winter? From Canada.
I would put it in a greenhouse shed or up against a wall, but will be fine outside if raised off the ground to allow it to drain correctly

Very very nice 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Is this possible to do for spring into summer? Like spring bulbs towards the top and summer bulbs lower?
Hello Tony. Do you dig those bulbs out after the season is over and then re plant the bulbs again?
Spring here is the most colorful. And summer is the dull death color! XD lol
You can use the same principles with summer flowering bulbs What I do it have pots for both at home
I just have five crocus n put them in the garden,,,,,,you have a lot,,,I just have five,,,,🐞🐞🐞🐞
The idea is to fill the container with colour throughout the spring
I only wish I'd have seen this sooner! This is brilliant! I love it! Can you do this with gladiolus bulbs too?!
Which month should I start this process in uk please?
Hi Tony could I reuse my potato compost to grow my tulip and daffodil bulbs in pots
Yes there is a video about reusing compost just type that into the search and add simplify at the end
Yes donald it would be fine\
I hope u also share the bloomed lasagne method. The before and after for our appreciation. Thank you for sharing your skills. Manila, Philippines
I didn't realize that the tulips would be able to make it all the way up from the bottom of that pot.
Yes every year they will climb right away through all the other bulbs and pop their head up
I grow my tulips with my carrots lol and they poke right through the carrots to pop out during spring.
I'm unsure where to put them for the winter. I saw that someone was trying this in Canada so I must be able to do it in Maine. Can I keep them in a room that I keep at 45-50 degrees? Would that work? Do they need to be in the dark?

Yeah these work great and bring in tons of colour right when there isnt much in the garden
My understanding is that the bulbs will eventually find their own ideal depth/position during growth ie - moving up or down slightly - somehow !?
