To this day one of the top 10 retired QBs of all time.
For today's fans, think Russell Wilson before Russell Wilson. Great in every phase, especially clutch and ran fearlessly when necessary during an era when it was legal to cleanly hit quarterbacks.
Might even go further and say Montana before Montana. Fabulous QB!

This was an interesting year for Dallas. I remember being sick after they dropped to 6-4 after back to back losses but they put it all together winning their last 6. This win against the Rams in L.A. was huge for them. Poor L.A. just couldn't beat Minnesota or Dallas in the conference championship during this decade.

Fortunately, after this game, and until the present, the Rams have beaten the Cowboys 4 out of 5 times in the playoffs. More to the point, Dallas has 1 total playoff victory in the last 30 years. But you are correct, the Rams had trouble in the NFC Championship games until 79'. A lot of really good teams, but not any great ones.

You know all too well we agree on that! The Cowboys' 1964-1980 Blue jerseys were fantastic!

    • @Ram44
      @Ram44 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I think they were terrible. The Cowboys would normally never wear them unless the home team forced them to which proved the Cowboys themselves hated them. The chose to wear them in Super Bowl V to break their jinx but it didn't work. I guess in hindsight they were decent but the Cowboys always look SO much better in white it's not even a discussion. Rams only wore white in both 1978 playoff games because they were trying to break their jinx wearing their blue uniforms in the playoffs (which is ridiculous - they beat the Redskins in 1974, beat the Cardinals in 1975 and beat the Cowboys in 1976 wearing blue in each of those games). Tip: the uniforms don't matter - the players do! Had they played Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XIII they would have had the choice of uniform as the "home" team. They probably would have worn white again. They had no quarterback for most of the 70's. I suppose their best QB was John Hadl in 1973 but even he couldn't beat Dallas in 1973. Their great defense and running back committee wasn't enough vs Dallas and their firepower.

    • @anthonybrooks5040
      @anthonybrooks5040 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Ram44 the playoffs against Dallas and Minnesota aren't the only times the Rams wore white jerseys at home in '78. Except for the 49ers, Steelers and Bengals, LAR wore their road jerseys at the Coliseum throughout that season. They were likely bringing back their practice in the mid-late '60s of wearing the roads at home. LAR continued this trend through '79 and into '80, their first year in Anaheim. True, players count more than uniforms, but ask a former Cowboy from the '70s-early '80s about the famous (or infamous) change.

@@Ram44 Dallas wore their blue jerseys in SB V because they were in the rotation as the designated "home" team. The "jinx" didn't have much power until Baltimore's Jim O'Brien kicked the winning FG as time expired in that game. Before then, the Cowboys' jinx was the Packers.

On May 02, 1978, the Houston Oilers drafted Earl Campbell as the #1 draft pick.
At that same 1978 NFL draft, Warren Moon remained UNDRAFTED!!!
Staubach played out the 1979 season and announced his retirement on March 31, 1980.
If they had signed Warren Moon in 1978, he would have had two seasons to learn the system.

The 1978 oilers vs Steelers conference championship game was the inclement weather, freezing lite rain ,ice , contest that Pittsburgh won 34 -5 . The renfro controversial call is overrated because it occurred in the third qtr ,the oilers had the entire 4 qtr to put up more points ,and if the renfro debatable end zone catch would have been permitted ,it only Tues the contest up . The Steelers hadn't allowed the oilers a single offensive TD in either conference championship game, the oilers a only TD in the controversial renfro conference championship game came from a defensive int return for a TD ,the oilers didn't score another point the remainder of the game ,zero , nothing ,while the Steelers scored 10 additional points , meaning the Steelers still would have won, and by a double digits margin . There is also a above camera shot of renfro actually juggling the ball as he cascaded out of bounds ,thus under the circumstances, not in inconceivable for the refs to not grant the oilers a TD . This same Steelers team who overcame a SB deficit vs the rams in this seasons SB 14 ,as well as it's previous two SB victories,a team who's roster harbored 5 hofers ,a top 10 all time head coach ,and people irrationally think the Steelers were going to become unraveled in a home conference championship game vs a adversary they defeated in this same game ,the previous year . The renfro non TD catch call is the most overrated post season controversy in NFL history. Even the oilers headcoach bum Philips and QB Dan Pastorini admitted ,the call didn't impact the games outcome .

@2:35....that's a catch! Hall of Famer Drew Pearson got that second foot down. But officials weren't used to seeing anyone do that back then. It's weird. Officials used to give receivers the benefit of the doubt when they were running out of bounds to catch the ball, only to get one foot down. But then they'd miss great catches like these, where the WR drags his toe.

    • @rkid727
      @rkid727 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Not sure he got both feet down but it looks like the line judge made up his mind really fast which is what they were taught to do back then. These days, they would have thought about it for a second or two. Preston Pearson caught a TD pass in the 76 Championship game that was ruled a catch but the ball clearly hit the ground and they ruled it a catch instantly. Same with the Butch Johnson TD catch in SB 12. That wasn’t a catch. Not even close. Even the commentators wouldn’t question the refs. Lol. Different times for sure.

People overlook the Cowboys, Colts superbowl that Craig Morton cost the Cowboys with two 4th qtr interceptions (Volk, which tied and Curtis, which lost), when probably every Dallas fan knew Staubach should have already been full-time starter, forcing stubborn Landry to finally, though too late understanding that. Morton did atone when his quarterback play was instrumental in greatly helping the Cowboys to their victory over Denver a few years later. Thankfully, he was playing for the Broncos at the time.

First, the ball is in QBs hand.
There are excusable ints. & inexcusable ones. Two poor
high (one real hugh) even if deflected throws at such key moments were typical of Morton, when., if ur old enuf to recall Cowboy fans were calling for Staubach from the beginning and Landry, with his alternating, and refusal to submit to Staubachs style and stubbornness was plain bad coaching. (George Allen would stubbornly cost his team a title, insisting on playing Billy Killmer instead of all time great Sonny Jorgensen in the Miami unbeaten season). Landry by didn't have confidence in Staubach and paid for it.
Morton, in the Denver, Cowboy SB was even worse, but 2 horrible 4th qtr SB clutch passes was more a reason than any fumble, which simply happened at at a bad time. That's what's great about sports tho. It's being debated five decades later.

At least the Rams got some payback when they went into Dallas in the '76 and '79 playoffs and beat Dallas both times as an underdog on the road. In fact, the Cowboys and the Rams met in the playoffs 5 times between 1973 and 1979, Dallas winning 3 times and the Rams winning twice. Of the 5 playoff games between the two, the only time the Rams were favored was in 1975, where they got completely demolished by Dallas in LA, when Dallas jumped all over them with a 21-0 lead in the second quarter and cruised to a 37-7 win. Dallas had 441 yards of offense while the Rams only managed 118 yards and just 9 first downs the entire game. Ironically, the Rams, who went an impressive 66-19-1 between 1973 and 1978, didn't win the NFC until 1979, with a 9-7 team that wasn't expected to do much, and ended up giving the powerhouse Steelers a heck of a battle in SuperBowl 14 that year before coming up a little short.

It really did used to be a 50/50 battle between Defense & Offense.
I’m still ok with some of the progression that gave the offense a little bit of a boost ( 80s football maybe even into mid 90s ) but what they have had for a good while now in the NFL , with the Offense having all of the advantages ... it’s irreparably damaged the game.
The 4000 yard passing season is now something that “middle of the road” QBs regularly surpass.
In 2020 Twelve QBs passed for 4000+ yards and Two more were at 3950 plus.
Top 5 QBs TD - INT differential
    33-7
    38-6
    40-12
    26-11
    37-10
    6th ( a rookie Herbert ) 31-10
    7th 48-5
The differential doesn’t go downhill from there either.
Imo stats are important to NFL history .... so now all of these guys (Bradshaw, Staubach, Griese etc) are all “scrubs” stat wise & this even includes guys like Elway, Kelly, & even Marino ... lots of contemporary QBs are “Crushing” Marino’s career numbers.
Brees has 20k more passing yards than Marino & 150 more TDS.
For comparison Bob Griese has 25k passing yards and 190 TDs - TOTAL-
So the gap between Brees & Marino is basically all of Bob Griese’s HOF & 8x pro bowl career.
KURT WARNERS “Greatest Show on Turf” season
    4300 yds 41 TD 13 int
Derek Carr 2020 - 4100 yds 27-9 td to int
Russell Wilson 2020 - 4200 yds 40-13 td to int
In 2020 Drew Lock & Carson Wentz led the league with 15 INTS
    In 1978 only 5 QBs surpassed 3000 yds passing ( compared to 14 being 3950+ in 2020 ).
Fran Tarkington led league with 3468 yards.
In 1978 15 ints was the 24th most in the league
Brian Sipe & Joe Ferguson had 15 each.
Fran Tarkenton led league with 32 & Ken Stabler had 30. 8 more QBs had more than 20.
    It’s very stupid now.
One thing will be interesting to see play out .... the question of “Did Jerry Rice make his numbers uncatchable” it seems he knew exactly how far he was going to have to push them to have a chance & did his best.
    1549 Rec

I agree 100% . Add in the potential additional extra regular season game and the continous liberals proliferation of rule changes meant to attract millennial novices who don't care about the authentic fundamental tradition of the game but rather high volume video game offensive stats all to bring in more endorsement revenue and a yearning by the league office to delpoy more NFL games into other countries , implemented by the optic of PlayStation offensive numbers to attract the nfl history lacking millennials and other countries to this brand of bad, biased exclusively on the behalf of the offense football which eliminates the narrative of equal application of fair play in terms of rules and regulations for the defense is literally helpless . Holding a opponent to 20 points today is considered great defense , a team can actually achieve getting a TD if they have to travel 80 yds with less then a minute in a game and no timeouts because defenses are now severly limited in how they can execute they're game plan, you can't hit a defenseless receiver , even if the receiver ducks his head to cushion the hit impact of a defenders blow which naturally a tackler is going to make some head contact because of this dynamic ,he's penalized for a helmet to helmet collision , a defender is comically penalized for falling on a QB on a sack ,defenders have actually injured themselves attempted to not fall on the QB by anding awkwardly .Wr's can push off with little penalty infractions which is the only all reason teams are enamored with huge Wr's moreso then any other time in NFL history ,but the mere second a already limited by the liberalism NFL rules the defensive back makes contact to protect his position on the area of the field ( to the millennial fans , by nfl rules a defender is suppose to have the same amount of right to a field space as the offensive player ) he's whistled for pass interference ,it's gotten so bad that after a great defensive play the defense the captive audience holds there collective breaths anticipating a defensive penalty negating the play ,or spoiled wr's throwing they're hands in the air in protest whenever a defensive back makes a good coverage play ,it's literally bad football to watch if your a fundamentalist ,ole school ,enjoy the intrinsical fundamentals ,coaching accumen ,chess match of wits, intestinal fortitude ,and observing elite talent supercede schemes and yes physical abuse meant to derail them ie 1973 OJ SIMPSON .It can also be applied to defensive players 1971 AlanPaige ,this new format dosent constitute a elite level of performance in terms of offense because all of the rules mandate at minimum low calory stats to still register as a pro bowlesque level . It's not generational bias towards this brand for various new rules introduced have certainly improved the quality of the NFL brand , but the over saturation of meh give the offense all of the advantages have objectively speaking completely destroyed the complete dynamic of coaching , physicality , intestinal fortitude, on all sides of the field . The Hof conversation inthe next 10 years will be for obsurd number guys in a tainted fraudulent offensive rules beneficial league ,the all time leading wr and passer eventually be by dudes who were never great but had longevity .

Speaking of weak NYG QBs, Eli went through Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers to beat Tom Brady '07 & '11. Right?

Never knew why. OK they lost SB-5 wearing them but they lost the '66 and '67 NFL championship games in the whites, they lost the '72 and '73 NFC championships in white, and they lost SB-10 in them as well. 1978 was the first year the designated "home" team for the SB could pick their jersey colors, and Dallas had the choice and they went with the white. The rap they gets a little unfair. The 70's Rams had a championship caliber defense, great WR's and a solid offensive line. Their weaknesses were always QB and RB. John Cappelletti, while great in college, was far from it in the NFL. Had Pat Haden been at leas 6'2 he might've very well ended his NFL career as the GOAT. But he was 5'11 and that proved to be a huge handicap for the Rams. Also letting Jawaorski go was a huge mistake. In many ways the 70's Rams actually over-performed by always getting to the brink of a title. Being weak at both QB & RB back then usually guaranteed a team an under .500 record, no matter how good the rest of the roster was.

I would have to imagine the '75 NFC Championship Game had to have been worse, even though the Cowboys had easily beaten the Rams when the two teams met to open the season. After all, the Rams were supposed to be in that title game, almost from the moment that season started, while the Cowboys weren't even supposed to be a factor in '75, much less get to the NFC Championship Game, and when they got there, they were basically playing with house money.
On the other hand, the match-up in the '78 NFC Championship Game was almost pre-ordained before the season even started, they were that much better than everyone else in the NFC. The result, especially given that the road team won these match-ups more often than not in the post-season from 1973-'85 (DAL 3-2 in LA, LA 2-1 in DAL), was not surprising, though like in the '75 NFC Championship Game, the dimensions of the Cowboy victory could not have been foreseen.

The Cowboys seriously lucked out against the Vikings at Bloomington The Sunday before the ‘75 NFC Championship Game. The Rams should have played those Vikings in Bloomington like they did the year before. Considering that the Cowboys did hold Training Camp in Thousand Oaks during that time,, Los Angeles was definitely “A Home away from Home” for the Dallas Cowboys considering that Thousand Oaks is just outside the Los Angeles County Line. So no, playing at the Coliseum in Los Angeles never factored into anything with the Dallas Cowboys.

@@Jiltedin2007 Except for the one pass near midfield prior to the Hail Mary that the officials got wrong, I'm not sure how the Cowboys got lucky, because they were actually the better team on that day in Bloomington, MN. But when the '75 season started, they weren't even supposed to have been in the post-season to begin with, so they may have felt that, even in the game in Bloomington, they were playing with house money, because nobody even expected them to get that far, something they carried through not only that game and the NFC Championship, but also for much of the Super Bowl, and if not for the antics of Cliff Harris, both before and during that game, the Cowboys might have won the Super Bowl, because the only thing they couldn't stop was Bradshaw-to-Swann, which is what ultimately beat them.
