Please stay off the drugs everyone and get high on the music, there are no bad side effects, just happiness. Thanks for helping us Marty, wish I had a teacher like you as a young guy.

    One unique reason Nirvana was so powerful and different was that Kurt played super heavy songs.. but in Major keys. Most people might compose 'Lithium' in E minor. But Kurt wrote it in E Major. So he would bring the super heavy screaming and intensity and distortion but it would be in a Major Key. So interesting to me. His musical choices were so unique, inspiring and powerful.

    5 minutes. That's all it took to play it after watching this. Sure, it's a bit sketchy at the minute due to lack of playing time and being terrible in general but now I know I can soon jam it cleanly, I'll definitely be practicing a whole lot more. Due to this and your other videos, you've inspired me to pick up my guitar every chance I get and considering I've had it ten years and barely touched it beyond having the occasional noodle when there's nothing on tv or to play on the playstation, that's truly something. I thank you for that man, you are the best teacher around.

    I love your tutorials. I am learning a lot of songs from you!
    I wouldn't say the timing was "lazy". Perhaps unexpected, but definitely intentional. "Lazy" makes it sound like it was by accident, but it was repeated this way in numerous performances. The title is Lithium, a psychiatric medication. I think it was intended to feel off kilter and odd, but also like a familiar nursery rhyme - a juxtaposition of sorts.
    Awesome tutorial as usual. Thanks.

    A few tips I can give you
    Work on either hitting the right strings or muting the ones that are not supposed to sound, or both. But it's needed for it to sound legit. And probably hard if you can't already do that.
    I feel the original song is slower compared to how Marty plays it at the beginning.
    It sounds to me that after the power E that starts the song there are open strings right before playing the G# and C#. Like open E and then G#. And then open A and then C#. To me if feels like he missed that.
    Once it goes to the first power A the original song is more like single notes instead of the strumming Martyn said. I can't really do what I'm saying though but I invite you to listen to the original tune and see if you can find it.
    Anyways this video definitely got me started but I like it so much that I kept working on it
    Also I usually practice it in standard tuning so I don't have to be tuning and detuning. Every now And then I do the open D tuning but what I'm saying is don't let that stop you from practicing.

      I hope you have figured out powerchords, since it’s been over a year. But for anyone else looking, I’ll try to explain simply. It’s a string down from your first finger, then 2 frets down. Also thing of open as 0, so a open powerchord just means put it on the second fret of the string down. Pretty simple.

  • @maxfilms4720
    @maxfilms4720 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Always played this with the A power chord rooted in the 5th fret but actually after hearing this I much prefer the 2nd feet barre. Another great lesson

    This must not be a Nirvana song. I've received word from the Kurt Cobain official haters club that he only uses 3 or 4 chords. That means that this song, along with "Drain You", and "In Bloom" could not have been written or played by Kurt. According to them he was a shitty 3 chord guitar player and they seem to know it all so... 🤪

    I'm sure you get a lot of requests for songs to teach, and I'm going to request a song that I cannot figure out how to play correctly (Which is probably because I've only been playing for 2 months, and the lack of tablature that I can find for it) Jack White/The White Stripes' 'You've got her in your pocket'. That would really make my day if you made a video about this song. I love your videos Marty, I hope you get even more love and support. Alex
